Holy Wow, Man! Very nice curtains! Both thumbs way up!

And after concentrating on fine details for probably too long I needed to step back and block in the full extent of the scene to see how much I have to go. Bear in mind that a lot of the blank buildings will end up as duplicates of some of the ones already mostly complete. I'm putting different faces on the front and back of each building so they can be used either way around - set them to different colours, add different amounts and coloured planter boxes, add different signage and there should be enough variation to make it not look too uniform.

Ive just stumbled on your thread here Howie, and am really enjoying seeing your charming Harpsburg buildings. The curtains look smashing - worth the trouble I dare say (I's like to try to get Carrara to do such a drape against some prop, though, just for fun.

Ive been weaving my way though your Advanced Carrara tuts and am enjoying them so much. Cracking piece of work putting those together, that was. I think I'm taking my time with them because I just dont want them to end....I'll be sad when the last one is done and have nothing more to look forward to (except experimenting on my own).

Anyway, look forward to more from this village scene, - a toast to you!

I think I've just been confused with Howie! We both do Carrara stuff but we are not the same person...

Are you sure? Have you ever seen the two of you in the same room?

(Carrara users, try this from Phil, works great and might be a nice complement to Howie's great Carrara scenes:

You may need to set the display in the Assembly Room to bounding box as Phil suggested to me, otherwise it brought Carrara to a crawl. No big deal, works fine after that.)

Thanks for the plug! I'm pretty sure we are not the same person, but I have learnt a lot from studying his scenes, they are all worth getting (and as a bonus, you get some great trees that you can use in your own scenes). Although now you mention it, I don't think we ever have been seen together...

YIKES, SORRY PHIL! GUESS I HAD A BRAIN MELt MOMENT THERE TO CONFUSE THE TWO OF YOU (my inner ear infection playing up again perhaps). Anyway, cheers - a toast to you both, same room or not.

No problem - it is an honour for me, I'm not sure how Howie would feel about it though!

And thanks for the thoughts about the Advanced Carrara training, I appreciate it.

Although you're complimenting PhilW instead of Howie, I'd like to add that those training videos don't end at the end. I watch them over again. This time picking which chapters will go into my playlist. Instead of using the included player, I use Media Player Classic, and drop in the chapters I want to watch. I also put the entire working files folder into my "My Presets > My Objects" browser so I can load them up for examples when I want to practice any of the lessons 'Live' on my own. Most fun!

    Speaking of training:
Howie, back when I bought your Stoney Creek bundle and other products, the old ArtZone as still available, but is no longer. I was wondering if you had copies of the cool write-ups you had for your products that might be accessible now? Your notes on rendering, lighting, etc., were priceless and I miss having the ability to point people to them when they have questions about such things.

Along with those notes, I have grown quite fond of your products and recommend them highly to everyone! Nothing gets more real than the real thing, and those environments are real representations of nature recreated here, within Carrara... I just love them!

It's fun to use those notes and play around with various experiments in translucency, global illumination, and so forth. The lighting setups you've included have taught me tons about designing Illumination.... Very nice stuff!

Here's a closer look at the guesthouse.

It looks like you have transparent flowers (and "Light Through Transparency" turned on) based on their shadows on the cottage. Was that your plan or am I just looking at it wrong?

Looks like he has a color set up in the Translucency channel to me. Although it perhaps looks a little strong, some translucent light filtering through leaves etc usually improves the look of plants and trees.

I'm filled with anticipation to see what the final camera views/renders will turn out!
Also, it's refreshing to see such a master branch into an urban setting ;)

I do have some of them downloadable from my (very rarely updated) website.

I was using the translucency channel in the shader and "light through transparency" in the render settings. This exposes one of the fundamental issues with the Carrara render engine - translucent shaders "project" a colored shadow when "light through transparency" is switched on as if the object was transparent. Usually for landscapes I do not use "light trough transparency" so it's not an issue, but with all the window glass etc in this scene it was switched on.

Haven't stopped on this (but other projects have been getting in the way). Here's a progress render. More building have been done - or at least started. Not too many more of those to go but a lot of the little details that make the scene convincing are still missing like street lamps, planters, benches etc.

That's looking fantastic with all the detail. I love the unevenness of the road, it gives it a very real, non-computer look.

Ooohh...you have added a lot on the right side... love the scene. Like Phil said, looks natural, like a painting or photo not computer generated. Love it!
