I hope the food in your fridge doesn't spoil. It sucks, no power, no ability to render. Thanks for the info. Take Care

...it should be OK for about 5 - 6 hours as long as I keep it shut, but if it goes overnight, then I have to pitch everything. Not thrilled about it as I am on an extremely tight budget, but food-borne illness isn't fun either.

It's also costing me extra money out of pocket to sit here for coffee & snacks so I don't look like a freeloader.

    My complaint.

I'm too paranoid about my computer...any computer I own.

I tend to get into this stasis pattern...this holding pattern with a new computer. I have a few games loaded and other stuff, then I just stop. I don't load anymore stuff even if it's just fine. I've been so paranoid about malware, that sometimes I just freeze.

    It's a hard habit to shake :/

    ...I understand that feeling.

My original idea with the workstation was to keep it a standalone with no net access, but ran into issues trying to port downloads done with the DIM on the notebook to it so I eventually gave in. I still go on line sparingly (save for the DIM and uploading images) and not only have a full security suite, but also a couple anti malware/adware utilities I run sweeps with on a regular basis as well.

    ...arrgh!!!!

Was working on my RRRR entry when the power went out. Went outside to check with the neighbours when I saw a reminder notice from the utility service hanging on the front door of the house. Apparently, the upstairs tenants haven't been paying the power bill and it was well past due (they usually let one slide for at least a month and mail/email past due notices before getting nasty). The upstairs tenants get a break on their rent (and mine increased last year) to compensate for the power I use as both my unit and the main house are on the same meter.

Of course, nobody upstairs is home but I did get a chance to speak with the landlady and she's going to contact them to get this taken care of. The rub in all this is the notice mentions that the bill has to be paid in person at one of the utility offices (only open until 5PM), not by phone, bank transfer, or at a bill pay outlet, so not sure when it will be restored.

Bad enough I lost a fair amount of work (including surface creation I was doing with the Geometry Editing Tool) but I just did my weekly market trip yesterday and bought a whole bunch of food that needed refrigeration or freezing. Won't be very pleased if it all spoils. Can't cook any of it because the stove is electric.

. ..and these people are Grad Students.

Currently at the corner coffee shop.

    Truly Complaint-Worthy. >:-(

I am no longer alone on this. -_-

I mean here I am tying to psych myself up to install the new Daz and get back into my art, and I'm terrified. I want to do it but, I just don't want anything to go wrong. Also DIM sounds so cool but.....I'm nervous. o_O

Perhaps it's irony but I've been running nightly scans on my computer (and my old one) with Malwarebytes for years and years....never found a thing....perhaps my paranoia is unfounded.

I just feel if I let my guard down....ugh

Morning. A lone seagull calling in the dawn over a foggy amd featureless skyline, grey everywhere you look and not real bright - not much difference between morning and night except I get to head off into the so far stillborn day instead of sleeping through it :)

Both DS and DIM are quite safe. DIM only runs when you launch it and only connects to the DAZ 3D server when you tell it to.

...when you sink a lot of your hared earned money (and in my case, a lot of time as well learning how to set up and building my workstation) into a new system, the tendency to be extremely cautions is understandable.

I dealt with an infection of a pesky redirect virus years ago on my notebook that was extremely difficult to eradicate. The first thing I did after installing a new HDD and using the master system recovery disk was purchase and install a full security suite. Never trusting my systems to MS security again.

Exactly, and on that note would you happen to know of a good free firewall? I've been kinda stuck with Windows firewall due to the new Comodo free one being completely horrid. I just can't seem to find a good one.

That's good to know, and my apologies if my worry comes off as mistrust in Daz. I know you guys are good. :)

I didn't want to bother with the DIM myself for a long time. But I upgraded to Windows 7 Pro before XP was dropped in April, and since I had to reinstall stuff anyway, I thought I'd give it a try. It's kind of nice. But it has some problems now and then. I've hhad several things that give errors, sometimes "Download Failed!" is the error. I don't know how that can happen. But worse when is the install fails. They can't seem to figure out what is causing it. I was told to just "download and install that product manually". I'd rather they find out why it's failing. So far there are four or five things that will not install with the DIM. Most of the stuff goes smoothly, though.

...I'm using a third party commercial firewall that is "backed up" with a couple malware and registry maintenance utilities (MalwareBytes, Sophos, and CCleaner), Consequently, I am not sure of which free firewall utilities are the best.

re: zip drives, SCSI interface, etc.

(sob) I feel so OLD!!! LOL!

place I worked right out of college had mini-computer (forget the type - not in business anymore anyway) with a 300 MB hard drive and a 400MB tape backup.

... this was a government (local - but still) agency and that RAN THE ENTIRE PLACE. The hard drive was the size of a WASHING MACHINE (clothes washer) and you could hit the 'disengage' button and lift the lid and LIFT OUT THE DRIVE PLATTERS! O.O they weighed about 30 lbs, were about 18" diameter (and stacked 5 or 6 high). But you never - EVER - stuck your hand down in the unit to make adjustments or whatever unless you pulled the power cord FIRST - if the system tried to access the drive while you hand was in there (even if the disks weren't) the drive head armatures would slash your arm and hand to ribbons (and had a decent chance of removing fingers) - the drive heads were mounted on steel blades about a foot long.

luckily the tape backup was more 'modern' (only about the size of an older VCR: 24" wide, 6" tall, 18" deep) as the previous REEL TO REEL had died shortly before I got there!

my first computer (that I bought new, that is) was a 486 25MHz - one of the first ones in America (I had the motherboard and chips special ordered from Korea - IBM hadn't even produced a prototype yet!)... 8 megs of RAM and a 120MB hard drive... VGA graphics with 256k on the card! weee! (by the way, that was considered a rendering MONSTER back then - well, in AutoCAD and the like at least).

my thumb/flash drive holds 8GB... my Kindle has 27 GB of storage... heck, my system has 16GB of *RAM*, 4GB of RAM on the Video cards (dual cards with 2GB each) and a 1TB hard drive!

... it is not even comparable, really... like comparing a Buggatti Veron to a Ford Model T.

which is sad, because my current system cost LESS than the first one!!

...we called the DEC drive units "Maytags" because they not only were as large as, but even looked like the type of washing machine you'd see in a laundromat. (see below).

Used to run one of those old tape drives on a regular basis at my multimedia development firm as the publishers would send us their journal files on tape. if the end of the tape was crimped in any way (which happened many times because they didn't put a sleeve over the tape) it would fail to thread properly.

First system was an old 48K Apple ][ with dual external 5.25 Disk ][ floppy drives.

First PC was an 12gHz 286 with a whopping 4 MB RAM 20MB HDD dual 5.25 double sided FDDs, and amber display monitor running MSDOS 4.0.

Apple II was a total revelation, it came with video out and a 16 bit (software) emulator wow, still have one in a cupboard somewhere

...came back home a couple three hours ago and everything in the freezer was still OK. Went out for a walk met up and talked with some friends then came back to find the power back on again. Checked the frozen items again and they were still hard as well as the milk hadn't soured so think I dodged a bullet there.

If it was out a few more hours, then I probably would have needed to pitch things.

...getting that stupid login rubbish again where I am misdirected to my account page after signing in and when I go back to the store page it indicates I'm logged out. Cleared cache & everything as usual and it still keeps happening.

Had two items in my cart from earlier today (Grass Shader and the PC freebie). When I went to add one of the G2 autofit freebies to my cart it said there were "0 items" even though I was supposedly logged in.

It's been nearly twenty five months now and this is getting really, really old.

And they have said the only fix at this time for this site is to clear your cookies as it is a known issue of this software. I just live with it as it is all we can do until they change the site software. Which I'm sure will not be a easy thing to do and will bring with it new things we as users will complain about until they are fixed. This one can not be fixed but is known, thus the plan to go to a new forum in the future. I suspect the disappearance of the old Forum Archives is a sign the new forums are under construction but do not know one way or the other.

    ...ugh, sports complaint...

LA Kings won the first match of the Stanley Cup Finals in Overtime. No team from a city that never, experiences "real" winter (eg Ice and Snow) should ever be allowed to take Lord Stanley's Cup home with them.

    Go NY Rangers

I never said it was not frustrating. Just known and we users told all we can do at this time. It bugs me too when it happens. I just do what I can on my end and carry on. Then I hope the next thing they install is better and gives users all the things back, like Inline images for Tutorials, I miss that, in line You Tube link displays, miss that one too, the old Forum Archives back in all its old glory, with the inline images. So much other stuff that I miss but all I can do is carry on right now and that is what I do.
