Carrara Challenge #58 - It's a Kind of Magic - WIP thread.
It’s a kind of Magic... Carrara Challenge #58
Magic… we all have our own idea of what the concept of ‘Magic” means.
For some of us it’s as simple as the illusion of pulling a rabbit out of a hat. Or sawing a pretty woman in two.
For others it might be a reference to The Magi (think about the name) who visited Christ in Bethlehem.
For some Christians Magic means Paganism (for example Simon Magus). For some Pagans it represents the life blood of the planet.
For people like Tolkien (and many others) it could be both good and evil.
Whatever your feelings on the idea of Magic there’s no denying that ‘life’, regardless of how much of it we take for granted, is Magic.
Life … being able to feel the wind in your hair, to hold a child in your arms, to smell a flower, to walk on a beach, to be aware of the curve of the Earth, to run our fingernails over a rock older than the beginning of time – all of these things, are Magical in one way or another.
That said, for this Challenge the Concept is “Magic” - in any guise you like.
Different...
I hope to make this one slightly different.
One of the ideas of the challenge is to share ideas - so I will start a thread where we can share scenes or objects or whatever that we have made for others to explore or use.
What might be good is lighting setups (as an example).
Also in the entry thread when it comes up you’ll be given a chance to say your entry is not for inclusion in the ‘judging’.
That way the concept of competition (or threat of having to host a challenge!) is removed for those artists who wish it so.
Nitty Gritty
- Dates_ to be announced _ I'm thinking to open the entry thread in about three weeks.
- Sponsors and prizes – to be announced.
- Entries – up to 4 entries per artist.
- Renders done in Carrara or one of her Render Plugins - eg Octane (A scene grab is handy but not a requirement.)
Looking forward to seeing what Magical renders and concepts come out of this!!

Magic Caster - raw render
that's magicl! thanks for getting the ball rolling - terrific narrative of opposing forces:)
Fun theme. Freebie thread is a magical idea.
Bunyip - snake staffs and sparklies are definitely magical. Way to start us off!
Nice idea Headwax!
When I saw 'magic' for some reason I immediately thought of a butterfly. Just trying lighting out here, final will probably we very different, I have more ideas for it. Right now the butterfly is just wings but looks pretty good for how simple it is. Oddly it only took about 20 minutes to model and texture the butterfly, then 3hrs playing with lighting and rendering lol... as usual...
Looking good !!!

Very cool eye makeup and ear morphs, Misty. Thanks for the expkanatory screen shots of the shader.
I asked the Mods to delete my posts about my troubles with getting my animation uploaded to Youtube or otherwise loaded. Thank you, Mods, for helping to clean up. The WIPs of magical Carrara should be easier to follow now.
Great !!!
Looking forward to the end result Misty !!!
hurrah back at you thanks for those settings - patience is the key - Old Arab proverb says - "The time that a man or a woman spends tinkering in three de is not removed from the sum total of the hours of their life:
Fiodlling with glare settings, discovered there was a Glint Option.
Most of the lightin on the boy is from Caustics - I set a light to only light up the water plane so that it would reflect into boy's face
DFiscovered something interesting with caustics (I think) in that if you set a light to light up only another bulb or a camera it seems to contrubute light to the scene - I think - obviosuly a bug but it could be useful ? not sure bears investigating
Glare seetings attached plus pre glare image
Headwax, looking great !!!
Glare is a newbie for me - where is it hidden and how is it activated ?
tanks , :) if you select scene in the instancies its on e of the things top right .... filters ? , where aura and toonpro etc is .sorry on ipad will check tommorow !
Thanks - found it, always learning something new with Carrara !!
Great tip, HeadWax. I want to jump in and play around with the scene filter.
