Now I remember my comment about Melbourne, Victoria. I was looking for a beach has a Metropolitan Tram stop. I found a beach called Saint Kilda. I saw some photos of the beach: the beach has waves. Cool.

Most beaches have waves. Well, unless your beach is at a pond or lake. Being on the east coast, when I think beach, I think ocean. But I realized there are beaches not at the ocean, like Echo Lake in No. Conway, New Hampshire.

I spent 20 years in El Paso. Lots of beaches, just no water. The desert's like that, you know.

El Paso sounds wondrous strange and beautiful :)

I went through El Paso once. On my motorcycle. I remember it quite distinctly. The stink around the miles and miles of cattle yards was unforgettable.

And the pathetic view across the border into Mexico toward Ciudad Juarez was depressingly enlightening. :-S

I won't be going back soon despite the plethora of shoreless beaches. :long:

...yeah another month like we've been experiencing and Oregon's going to start looking like El Paso.

Advance snowpack forecast looks bleak for next winter as well. Even 14,000' Mt Hood is pretty much bare. Lots of brown lawns in the city, and even the parks are not doing well.

Been staying up late to work on projects but just too tired and core temps still in the 70s during rendering even at 01:00 - 03:00.

Going to be an interesting 4th when everyone lights off fireworks. We have a real issue here with people buying the areal stuff like skyrockets and mortars across the river in Washington State and bringing it back. Illegal here, but not really enforced much..

The Frozen Margaritas at the pub were very good, but also very strong. Between the drinks (only 2), disrupted sleep schedule, and the ongoing heat. wave, am pretty beat. Going to try and turn in early tonight and see if I can .actually get back on a more civil schedule.

Tomorrow not quite as hot (only 95°, or so they claim).

    Nite all....

Well, as they say..."If you don't like the weather, just wait it'll change." :cheese:

It will probably change dramatically after Mt. Rainier or Mt. Hood blow their tops. :-S

..well if Mt. Hood goes, you probably won't be hearing from me anymore.as it's only about 46 miles as the crow flies from my neighbourhood

The "Just wait" adage doesn't apply out here this year. It's been dry and hot since the beginning of June We've gone 30 days straight without so much as a drop of rain in what is supposed to be the wettest region of the nation. The last time we had any measurable rainfall was during the first three days of June and that was mostly just off and on light showers.

Happy Independence Day to all my fellow Americans! :cheese:

As is traditional for myself and many others, I will me eating hot dogs and drinking beer for the day (except breakfast, that's corned beef hash).

I have: all beef hot dogs, cheddar bratwurst, bacon/cheddar bratwurst (!!), two kinds of mustard, two kinds of relish, shredded cheese, hot dog chili, and of course hot dog buns. I have a six pack here, and the bar will be open starting at Noon so there's pretty much enough beer for today (heh).

I hope everyone, everywhere, has a fantastic day! :cheese:

Tchaikovsky on the 4th? Must be "1812?"

I lived in Washington DC for many years and attended the 4th of July events on The Mall several times. If the weather is good the whole Mall is packed with people and especially in front of the stage. One year I was determined to get close enough to the orchestra to hear them play. The stage faces the west side of the Capitol Building and the steps serve as bleachers. You can get several thousand people between the stage and the Capitol, but it fills up quickly and people hang on to their seats with determination. Again I missed my opportunity so I wandered around the stage and found that behind the elevated stage was an area free of people but mostly populated by stage hands and other people associated with the production. Behind them is a 6 foot high hedge. I sat down on the ground with my back to the hedge and listened to the music. I couldn't see the orchestra but I could hear them quite clearly. Yea! :-)

It finally came time to play the Tchaikovsky 1812 Overture. I enjoyed it very much... until it came to the point where they fired the cannons, which I discovered were 4 feet behind me behind the hedge. I swear I levitated off the ground and hung in mid air for 4 seconds each time the cannons fired. :bug:

    Edited to add:
I should remark here that the image below, though pretty, and interesting, does not reflect reality and is probably a composite. The fireworks as shown are not visible to the thousands of people assembled on the steps. And in all the years I lived in Washington DC, they were never seen over the Capitol from that direction. That would put the launch site in the middle of populated areas of Capitol Hill and the overpaid elite who live there would probably complain. Rather the fireworks are normally launched from wide open areas of The Mall near the Potomac River further west of the Capitol building, behind the orchestra stage, behind even the Washington Monument. People on The Mall look west to see the fireworks, not east. Although I have to admit that I've never actually seen where they're launched from and for all I know may be launched from a barge anchored in the Potomac River beyond the Lincoln Memorial. I could probably Google it but I feel lazy tonight.

    Edited again to add:
Ah ha! Found it! The fireworks for Washington DC 4th of July celebration are launched from the area of the Reflecting Pool between the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial.

I wonder about For Those About To Rock by AC/DC. Do they use canons in their shows? I think probably a lot of venues would not allow it, nor would the police, FBI, etc. in this day and age. More likely they use a synthesizer with a sampled sound.

...I expect the local fire brigade to be rather busy tonight. I'm going down the the river later to watch the pros light them off instead. Much safe as they do it from a barge in the river. Some day I'd like to go up the the Fort Vancouver display again (biggest show west of the Mississippi). However, our transit system goes to bed early in that area of town before the show ends (especially since they are on Sunday schedules today).

Last time I was able to see that one was during the Westercon Sci Fi convention that was held here on the same weekend back in '95. We had both riverfront hotels booked right across the river from where the fireworks show takes place. Had a 2nd floor riverside balcony room as I was one of the convention staff (art show director) so I was able to get an early reservation in. Normally those rooms go for 150 - 200$ per night on the 3rd & 4th. I paid the flat convention rate of 75$. Hotels made way more from hosting the convention that weekend than they would have simply renting the rooms out as usual.

Going there by car just to see the display is not a very good idea as you get gouged for parking and traffic is a mess after the show.

Wish our transit system would have some more foresight for huge events like this, especially since they have the LRT running to both Expo Centre in North Portland and the airport. They could easily run shuttle buses to Hayden Island from the end of the Tram line.
