Complaint: A nice thunder storm went through here last night.  At first it sounded distant, and seemed to be rolling by perhaps north of here.  But while I was watching the news, around 1:30 am, there was a big crack and poof...in the darkness.  Two UPSs beeping for my attention, one downstairs in Diane's office, where the cable modem and router are, and one upstairs in my office.  Little emergency light did not turn on.  I though the battery was dead.  But after I stumbled around in the total blackness, I grabbed my flashlight, took a look, and the switch was on off rather than autoangry  A lot of good that did!  Powere didn't come back until around 4:14 am.  Woke me up, I was on the sofa in the den, waiting.  Looking out the window before this, I could see that it was the entire area that was out.  Even the glow on the clouds from the mall a mile away was missing.   Fun.

Hmmm... this seems to be a corollary to the rule that when looking for electrical problems, first make sure the plug is inserted in the socket.

It wasn't my doing.  Diane said that she might have turned it off when she unplugged it to use the socket for something else.  If you unplug it and it's set to auto, the light will shine.  You can use it as a flashlight as well as an emergency room light.  Still, I wish she'd remember to put things back the way she found them.  Fortunately I didn't hurt myself groping around in the very black darkness.

Distracting thing of the day: reading Engadget.com, a tech news site, and there's an article about a dude that got a bionic penis.

This is tech news? Still, the article was interesting, but those two words will stick in my mind for days...

    Yecch!  Very complaint-worthy!

...indeed.  Fortunately nothing got fried (I hope).

We have the possibility or water from the sky in the forecast this weekend, Hope it doesn't include lightning as it is incredibly dry here. We have another major wildfire raging east of the mountains and the smoke began encroaching on the city this afternoon.  Not quite as bad as last Saturday though.

Another one of those 0x00000000 blue screens tonight.  Checked every troubleshooting release I could find about it and none of the reasons mentioned apply.

Nothing fried that I'm aware of.  I use APC UPSs.  The one with my desktop here is a SmartUPS C1000.  The one downstairs is an older Office version...small, but sufficient to the task.

    ...full day today.

I Got up early to get ready for a job interview which is on the other side of town but for a really cool company that refurbishes older airliners for cargo use at Portland's "other" airport in Hillsboro.  Actually a much nicer commute than the old job as the Tram nearly took me right there in less time.  The interview went very well and the person who spoke to me was not some HR rep, but the main warehouse supervisor.  Actually two positions are open on for receiving and one for "kitting" (assembling kits of parts to be used in the conversion operation). Nice facility and everything is selected by barcode (unlike the last place) so very little chance of error. He was very impressed with my background and experience. Another good thing is one of the "desired"  qualities is an interest in aviation.

    ...OK.

We actually ended up talking a bit of "shop" during which I mentioned I had an interest in aviation and engineering since my high school days but never went into the field as there was no A&A engineering programme in Wisconsin where I lived at the time. He then mentioned was they do have a programme to help with education for the more technical aspects of the work which definitely piqued my interest. at the end he told me I'd be receiving a call in the next couple days to set up a second interview with the plant's director. This is further than I have got im almost any interview proces (except for that call centre I washed out of).

I also mentioned that I was in the process of relocating and if hired would look into moving to Hillsboro.  Afterwards I too ka walk around the centre of town and really liked what I saw and felt.  It isn't "suburbia" (like Beaverton is) but an older town with it's own identity, a nice CBD reminiscent of Stevens Point WI where I went to school (without the brutal winters), and a many of the same amenities I currently have in the area where I've been living...along with much more affordable rents. The other nice feature, the pace there is much more relaxed, something I really like and I think would be good for me.

The tram line to/from Portland is very frequent with good schedules from very early morning to late night all days of the week so if I do want to meet up with friends or go to events like a concert or recital on the weekend, it won't be a big ordeal. If I do move there, I will also be able to bike to work again.

I get a blue screen now and then on my main machine.  It's almost always when I'm browsing complicated news websites with several news videos on the same page.  The nearly useless clues that I get from the computer are that it stalls for a few seconds then blue screens and then reboots.  Somewhere in that process I read an error message that says it was because of the "video driver" .

On that machine I'm using the stock video chip (AMD 6450).  Computer is an HP desktop (h8-1010), Intel i5 dual core (not quad) CPU running at 2.7GHz, with 8GB RAM and running Win7-Pro.  Primary display is an HP 23" (HP w2338h, HDMI connector) with a secondary 23" display (HP 2311x. DVI connector).  I don't know what causes these blue screens but they've been happening for a couple of years 5 or 6 times a year but are almost always associated with web pages with numerous videos or animations.

Thursday, one more day until Payday. laugh

Up late last night, doing film scoring!  Yep, I took "Plan 9 From Outer Space".  (which is public domain), loaded into my digital audio workstation software, and replaced the first 10 minutes of the audio track with some dark ambient music!  Now to re-score the whole film and put it up on YouTube (lol)!  Of course, it's over an hour long so this is qute a big project.

I'm not sure anything will make the movie more watchable, though.. it's considered the worst movie ever made.  I tend to agree.

I might have to upgrade my composing software.. shudder.. the best software for film scoring is $600, second-best is $500.. maybe mac and cheese for 2 weeks.. le sigh.

I bet it has something to do with Flash player.  A lot of the news sites use that.  I've read that it's going to be put out of business by new things coming up.  I sure hope that's true.  What a pain it is!

...yeah, have an old GTX 460 with 1 GB memory.  A few drivers behind as all the newest ones have been "game specific" drivers and I don't do games.

Supposedly the primary reason for 0x0000000 stop error relates to unused or obsolete drivers. I got the full list and none of them are on my system.

...thank you all for the good wishes.  Yeah felt really good all day yesterday. Stopped at the pub for a couple pints of cheap beer afterwards to celebrate and tell the mates even though the account was tight on cash.

At least I got to use my PC/PA coupie this month and got three Iray shader and lighting goodies on the one day 50% sale (two that were on my wishlist).  Still have the regular PC coupie and thinking of getting Monique (would be 9$ and change) but need to scrape up a bit of cash and get it in my bank account before 11:59 Daz time tomorrow to avoid the risk of a 32$ overdraft fee.

    Four complaints for Thor's Day:

Someone won the 6.4$ million Megabucks and it wasn't me.  Didn't even match three numbers to get a free play for Saturday this time.

Nobody won the 55$ million MegaMillions (including me, didn't even get a 5$ payout).

Didn't sleep very well as I had two 20 oz cups of coffee to weather the long ride out to the interview and back. I usually maybe have a 12 - 16 oz cup now and then with at least a quarter of the volume being steamed milk to counter the acid.

All the new changes to the forums' "look" and spell checker is still a pain.
