Midsummer huh.... Hardly seems like that here. Was cold and wet for the first few weeks, then we had melting hot week, then a cold day followed by a wet day, then another week of moderately warm, then a few days of melting hot, and it's been a mix of cold, warm, and a few melting days mixed in ever since ^^
Yesterday was warmish. Day before was melting and the day before that it was cold =/

There is a party for the Solstice (sun hitting 23 1/2 degrees declination) in the city square tonight, not sure whether you have to be a pagan to get in. Not many Oak trees in these parts either...

eta there will be a party at Stonehenge as well I guess :o)

    Today's Geographical Minute: Zanzibar
Zanzibar is a semi-autonomous part of Tanzania, in East Africa. It is composed of the Zanzibar Archipelago in the Indian Ocean, 25–50 kilometres (16–31 mi) off the coast of the mainland, and consists of numerous small islands and two large ones: Unguja (the main island, referred to informally as Zanzibar), and Pemba.

The capital of Zanzibar, located on the island of Unguja, is Zanzibar City. Its historic centre, known as Stone Town, is a World Heritage Site and is claimed to be the only functioning ancient town in East Africa.

Zanzibar's main industries are spices, raffia, and tourism. In particular, the islands produce cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, and black pepper. For this reason, the islands, together with Tanzania's Mafia Island, are sometimes called the Spice Islands (a term also associated with the Maluku Islands in Indonesia). Zanzibar is the home of the endemic Zanzibar Red Colobus Monkey, the Zanzibar Servaline Genet, and the (possibly extinct) Zanzibar Leopard.

saw some pictures of Normandy from 1944.

it would be interesting to see what it's like there today.

my last name is Norman, some of my great grandads passed through there at some point on their way to Ireland (North)
made their way to County Cork, thaz where Grandad caught the boat.

He married a Hunarian lady in Brooklyn. all i know about my grandma's genealogy her last name started with a U. her first name was Barbara but she wanted everyone to call her Birtha. i didn't know Birtha wasn't her real name until after she died. None of her side of the family bothered to jot down their cookie recipes. Hungarian alphabits haz a lot of letters in it.

looks in the mirror for a resemblance to Zsa Zsa, lol

    I have returned!

One of my friends had to bail, on account of sudden illness, so that's why I don't have photos, since she's the one who does piccy-taking while I master chef grilling.

    We had... let's see...

    Sausages (four different types)
    Chicken
    Pork
    Mixed salad
    Potato salad
    Corn onna cob
Mushrooms filled with chopped chili pepper cheese
    Strawberry-whipped cream cake

    So fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuulllllllllllllllllllll!

And I have taken doggybaggies back home, so tomorrow I don't need to cook anything. It was so much fun! My friends were great and helpful and kept the highly hyper dog entertained and away from the grill, and everything (besides my poor friend -- took a doggybag for her too) went well!

Our kitty was HIGHLY annoyed by the dog. Somewhat mollified by the fact that my friend gave him a good scritching and I managed to keep the dog away while she was scritching the kitty.

Oh and Misty, the type of sword you're looking for is "sai", if sharp, and "jitte" if blunt.

Hello... Are you perhaps thinking of a Sai? I think they where using a form of sai in the Mummy film. Same weapon attributed to (used by) the Elektra comic book character.

Edit: Ooops! Skiriki beat me to it.

i had no idea Greenland is so BIG!

That's just what happens when you unroll and flatten it. It tends to stretch a little. *wink*
