    Complaints!

    - Overcast and muggy
    - Foot X-Ray today
    - Have to work late
    - Slept very little last night
    - Way, way too many really weird dreams
    - Woke up tired, for Heavens sake

    Non-complaints:

    - I got paid!
    - Some small amount of money for content
    - Only 2 more X-Ray visits yaay
    - Will have a fish sammich for dinner, w00t

Maybe more severed head fun tonight! (evil grin)

Overcast but a long way from muggy here - walked around all day dressed like a Michelin Man *miss dead fish on a tray*

Question for the smarter minds: Sub-Surface Scattering -- should I use it for furry critters' bodies, or just fleshy bits like insides of mouth or hard bits with some translucency or sheen, like hooves and teeth?

At the moment the body of my Eurohippus is driving me nuts. I thought I had nailed it, but noooooo.

I dunno about Poser/D|S SSS, but I don't believe it's meant for fur. Nothing stopping you from trying though - there can be lots of creative uses for it (Like it being the ONLY way to get godrays in Indigo and Maxwell ;P)

Though using it on the ears would work I guess - they usually be quite translucent :)
    Skin yes, hair/fur usually no.

Generally I would not believe the dude on the bus. Do some research before accepting what he say. Also some people get information from other people who get information from a website which got their information from someone making things up. Or something like that, but probably longer.

sounds like good advice. first i have to find the correct spelling norapathy.
maybe mayoclinic.com. bald fingers might not be a symptom in their list. hmmm

Sadly, not that funny. :/ It is a "disease" where the patient believes that fibres are pushing out of their body, whereas they are normal residue from being clothed or in contact with fabric. A bit similar to delusional parasitis.

Thanks, I'll do couple of test runs with the "settings that worked with the lights that worked" and then proceed to tweak the body for more default sort of lights.

Velvet option, though, is quite nice, so I'll check the usual ubersurface options nonetheless... and this is a hairy beast, so insides of the ear are kinda out of that. :D

Hurr hurr had some fun with the "Jiggle Deformer" last night http://fc03.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2013/162/a/8/belly_wiggle_by_raethalis-d68ovzr.swf

Good for making wiggly bellies XD
However it won't work with still objects - there has to be motion. I am terrible at animating stuff (Lack of patience), so I just added a Vibrate tag to the dino which made it bounce and shake a bit. Made the belly wiggle though XD

For a technical explanation and setup (Which also used a belly for the example) straight from the developers: http://www.deviantart.com/users/outgoing?http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T54h1FMqcyE

In my experiences with SSS, it's VERY sensitive to light. The more lights you have, the less noticeable the effect is. Completely flooding the scene with a dozen or two spotlights and infinite/point lights will dilute the SSS effect in most cases and completely negate it.

Twenty minutes and I go for my monthly foot X-Ray. I'm amazed that my foot doesn't glow in the dark at this point (and hasn't turned into a Godzilla foot)!

Tonight for dinner I think I'll go multi-cultural and have tacos and egg rolls, whee! That and a couple of beers and I should be a nice, happy camper.

Looking forward to Saturday shopping - new shoes, a cook pot, and a trip to one of the 3 Chinese places near the Target I'm going to. Yummy! Otherwise, write and render all weekend! It's going to be way too hot to go out, and there's a HUGE biker rally this weekend so it's going to be too rowdy for me on Sixth Street.

Bzzzzzzap - GODZILLA FOOT! {(bug eyed emote)

ugh i'm having to use IE until i get my dayjob compy. no word wrap, i have to horizy scroll back and forth to read. i'm getting lazy and just reading the left side of the paragraphs.

dude on the bus was telling me about norapathy in fingers and the little finger hairs. i haz a couple fingers with the lil hairs the rest are bald. can i believe a dude on the bus on medical matters?

Do you mean neuropathy? I'm not sure what the hairs on your fingers have to do with that. But it sounds like a potentially serious condition. Damaged or deteriorating nerves are the foundation of that disease. I think diabetics can develop some form of this. Some of the symptoms can be due to other causes, such as nerve damage from an accident, I think. Do you think you have this? Google neuropathy to see the symptoms and description. Of course you shouldn't take medical advice from someone on the bus...unless he's a doctor. But it may be someone who has experience, either direct or via family or friend or loved one. Always speak with a doctor about things before deciding that's what you have, though.

Taken from a post on C4D 12's SSS:
"Often an SSS object will look fantastic simply illuminated by one scene light, or maybe with a second fill light barely "ghosted". It's often enough. Start adding many lights, a lot of REFLECTION/ENVIRONMENT, or HDRI skylighting, and the whole SSS effect may be spoiled. However, GI, global AO and Caustics, in your RENDER SETTINGS can enhance the look a great deal."

And a nice video on various SSS technqiues:
    http://greyscalegorilla.com/blog/tutorials/how-to-setup-and-use-sub-surface-scattering-in-cinema-4d-r13/

he also brings up the "Too many / too strong lights will ruin it" topic.

'course, all that is Cinema 4D, which may have different takes on SSS than Poser/D|S, but the general idea should remain the same - more lights, less effects. Thinner surfaces, more effect - thicker surfaces, less effect.

I might not have a severed head until this weekend.. geesh! (frownie)

    Chew gently... (^_-)

Maybe I'll just do body parts on a cake cart with cake instead. But I need floating heads in crystal balls, so I'll have to get this working eventually.. sigh..

Now it's starting to sound like Futurama! Floating heads in bell jars...but those heads are alive and talk. :D

Okay, so. Here's the cutiepie Eurohippus skin I made! But I need to stab-stabbity to make it work with other lights, and I think Rezca is right about problems with SSS. It makes sense. Sorry about the watermark, but I figure this one might need it placed rudely like that...

New complaint! All content money for this paycheck spent in 10 minutes, and my Daz and Rendo wishlists are barely any smaller. (cry cry cry)

New non-complaint: Now own Gemologica and Genesis Creature Creator morphs! Also pies and cookies and cupcakes, some evil characters, and a cake cart! (grin)

It's going to take MONTHS to empty my darn wishlist, and these are just things I need for my Webcomics.. argh! (blank face) Erm, well, the cakes and stuff were an impulse buy, but now I can render sweet goodies! (grin)

Oh and searching for "cheesecake" on Rendo and Daz produces non-bakery items.. (red face)

I need to spend some serious time considering how to best wrangle content.. since a lot of what I have doesn't contain metadata, DS 4.6 doesn't seem to pick up on it in search (lameeeeeeeeeeee) so I need an alternative. Ugh.

Did you look at Exnem's stuff at Renderosity? Some good looking food products. Pastry, cake, fruit, BBQ Steaks!

I'm upset that Finder II won't work with DS 4.5/4.6/4.whatever. They keep selling us tools that they later break with a new version of DS.

I'm mildly peeved about the mane and tail, though. The original model really screwed the pooch, they're not 100% to my satisfaction.

This would be why I'm also making a LAMH preset for it! :D (I can export the tail-tuft rather easily and slap it along the rest...)

...The thing I dislike about IE is no auto spell check (at least I can't find it). Not that the one in FF is stellar as some of the suggestions I get for a simple misspelling can be rather unusual and out of left field, but it at least highlights the typos.

...in the SubSurface Tool Box for Daz there are several presets for hair as well as cloth but only for setting "velvet", shadow, and occlusion values.

The SSS settings are primarily for surfaces like skin, milk, and other items that benefit from surface translucency.

Yep, I used that kit when I was tweaking the settings; I wanted that velvety surface at my disposal. Hence my surprise when I swapped lights.

And thanks, SickleYield. :) It really IS adorable creature!
