  • If the old laptop has SATA connections for the internal disk drive, then replacing the spinning hard drive with a modern SSD has done wonders for my old laptop, and my sister-in-law's and the machines of a couple other people I know.enlightened

Also, if it's not maxed out with RAM then adding RAM to its max can make a significant difference for old machines too. But with both improvements together, it's like a new machine. surprise

Non-Complaint:  Wheee... I've been geeking all day.  But I've just finished and my poor homeless motherboard "George" is now back in his home and working fine.  And the usurper (my DAZzing machine) who had stolen his case has moved to a brand new, larger case and is also working fine.  Everybody's happy.  Wheee...smiley  I even hooked up my RGB lights on my DAZzing machine's CPU fan despite them being mostly hidden, but from the back the lights do a dance on the dangling cables.  I haven't tested everything yet, but I'm pretty sure I got all the cables in all the right sockets, it's relatively neatly tie-wrapped & cable managed, and it's such a pleasure to pick up an opened, heavy case by grabbing along an exposed edge and not having slice the inside of your finger joints.  Rounded edges, good idea!

I'm celebrating my geekday by ordering a large pizza with mushrooms, sausage, and black olives.  Mmmm, yum.heart

Working on learning zBrush again,  thinking about picking up Blender in the (far) future to serve as a suppliment and/or replacement for Cinema4D (Since I never did upgrade from R13 Visualize before they went Subscription-only...)

If I get Poser,  can you use that to make content that can be shared around?  It was always a mystery to me how people make those Morph Packs, or even the creatures themselves.  All very far-future thinking right now though~

    C4D is not subscription-only.

    C4D is not subscription-only.

Weird;  I just went to check and yep they got a perpetual license there   -  I'm almost positive that when I last checked, which was a while ago admittedly, there wasn't any option for a perpetual license.... Or maybe I was mis-remembering it as Vue having dropped the option (Double-checked just now as well, and I'm only seeing Monthly/Annual options there)

Downside to if I ever upgrade though is I'll lose access to the InterPoser plugin since it stopped working around R15, and the author left the coding scene so no updates.  Bright side is by using a modern C4D version I could make use of that DAZ-C4D bridge.

Thanks for the info,  for the longest time I had it in my memory that they were only offering subscriptions!

Complaint:  Oops, found my first angerpoint with my new FractalDesign computer case.  The power button is on the top near the front.  It's flush mounted and only moves a fraction of a millimeter to activate, it's exactly the same color as the case, and requires very little pressure to activate.  I discovered this while inserting a USB cable into one of the USB sockets next to the power button. Similarly, the microphone and headphone jacks are on the other side of the power button.  Grrrrrr....angry  Bad design, symetrical layout, easily accessible, but bad ergonomics.frown  Put that power button away from all the other buttons, or light it, or make it more noticeable by sight and by touch, or make it harder to press accidentally.enlightened

More Complaint:  Arghhh... I just found out that in addition to the power button flush with the top of the case, there is a tiny RESET button about the size of the top fifth of a BB (as from a BB gun) this is also the exact same color and material as the top of the case and activates if you breathe on it.  Arghhh...  What were they thinking?crying

Non-Complaint:  At least I know that I wired the POWER and RESET leads to the correct pins on the motherboard.  Works just like it's supposed to.indecision

Yet another Complaint:  I just realized I don't see any obvious Power LED light in my new FractalDesign "Meshify-C" case.  I'm pretty sure I plugged in the front panel leads to the correct (+,-) pins, but no obvious light.  I do see a flickering blue light that corresponds to SSD activity, but no light indicating that power is engaged. Hmmm...

Moderated complaint:  OK, so Googling around the Internet reveals that my new computer case does actually have separate power and hard drive(HD) activity LEDs.  But they're both blue.indecision and crammed into the same hole in the case behind a bluring foam dust filter.surprise  I've verified it.  If I look carefully, the power LED comes on at the top, of the hole, and the HD LED flickers at the bottom of the hole.  Subtle, but somehow disappointing.frown  However, I'm still pissed off at the touchy Power and Reset buttons being too easy to be accidentally activated.  Especially since I have to reach under my desk shelf into a cubbyhole to access USB & headphone sockets that are right next to the catastrophic buttons.angry  That's why I would have preferred the sockets on the front of the case.  Oh well, next time.indecision

...well, going to be scarce around these parts for a bit as I seem to no longer have Net service. Long story but apparently the building I am in did not take over providing service as I thought. I have mot received any bills from the commercial service I had for several months now, only an occasional invoice for the same specific amount that never changed. I also never recieved a suspension or discontinuation of service notice either. I find it difficult to believe that they would not have noticed I was still connected all these months. Before anyone brings it up, I did check all my connections, and ran all the diagnosics available to make sure it wasn't on my end (was up until after 03:00). So I called their support this morning to see what was up (and if indeed I still had been connected through them). They are looking into the matter and will get back to me. I also forwarded the last invoice email I received, to their CS department, but with the holiday, likey won't get a respone until midweek at best. So yeah, won't be around very much as I have a limited amount of data per month and reading/responding here using the phone is a real pain (can't even do paragraph breaks so apologies for the big block of text as well as any typos).

    Ack!  Bummer! No net! sad

Y'know, they make some wonderfully hi-gain WiFi antennas these days.  Somebody in your neighborhood is bound to have an unsecured tranceiver.  Not ideal, but with a good router/firewall/AV it could work in an emergency...

My brother has a large property and his workshop is quite a ways from his house.  Getting WiFi out to him had always been a problem.  But recently he bought an antenna that not only gave him 5 bars from the house, but showed up many many other signals all with at least 4 bars and this is a tiny town with wide spaces between homes.  Before I could afford Internet service I tried using a "Cantenna" (looks like a Pringles can with a coax connector and a tripod mount) and it opened up this whole end of town to me if I was willing to aim the thing.  But that professional hi-gain antenna my brother found is amazing.  It's omni-directional and the whole town is visible to him.  Most people have enabled encryption but some haven't.surprise

Every half hour I get a cool shower, when I hose the aviary roof tarp to keep the birds alive. Then dripping wet I float frozen litre/gallon bottles in fish tanks trying to save those guys. And although I have said a lot here, at home I am a person of few words. They are f**k, F**k, and F**K. Same word, just different tonal levels. So yes - I need a skunk because giving is always good. Gotta be careful going on open wifi though. Some people run honeypots and try to use wireshark to get passwords and stuff to people that connect and worse lol.

Yeah, it's a risk, and borderline ethical, but in a non-abusive emergency and with "tunneled"* connection could work.

    * Note: Don't get old, one's brain forgets words.frown  I've been racking my brain for several minutes for the word/phrase I was looking for and "tunneled" was all I could come up with.  It's close, but not right for the virtual connection that is encrypted from end to end, whatever it's called.  Somebody help me out here.crying

Maybe VPN (Virtual Private Network)?  Norton supplies one of those, which I use on the laptop and on our phones!

...well,to add insult to irritation, in the middle of the night, the smoke alarm began to "chirp" intermittently which is the sign it needs a new battery. Were I in my old place that would be remedied by goong to the store getting s new battery snd putting it in. Not so simple where I live now as the alarms in the units are wired into the building's central system as well as out of easy reach (in the old place I could simply reach up and remove the unit to install a new battery as the ceiling was rather low). Here I need maintenance to do it, but the catch is, it's a holiday so no staff is around. So I'll have to deal with it all day and night before it can be attended to. Talk about really, really bad timing. The really frustrating part is that maintenance was scheduled to do this in April but COVID caused it to be cancelled and only serious emergencies like a broken pipe or fridge dying would be handled, no "routine" matters. That has been relaxed a bit but now we need to make an appointment even for something like this so it could take longer.

It is against county ordinance here to not clean up after your pet, so my next sign will say, "All dogs and their owners are on camera, and yes, I can identify everybody.  Please clean up after your dog!"

Now, there's a thought. I do have security cameras ... but unfortunately  live in California. Recently when a beauty salon owner posted a video about a certain house speaker will all hell broke loose.Wonder what would happen if I posted a sign saying, "Beware, yard with ticks and fleas". I have one neighbor/neighbour who always picks up after her dog but she doesn''t belive in recycling or is color blind, because she throws it in the gray recycling bin. Thank God my disabled hubby has a pick-me-upper. It's partially my fault for waiting for the next day to pull in the bins.

New twist on the spam-scam calls... Spoofing healthcare phone numbers to trick people... The only problem with the one I just got is that the caller ID was for a healthcare company, but the message was pretending to be Apple warning me there was "suspicious activity on my account"...

You gotta work these details out in advance people... D minus for effort.

I've been getting one call per day to every phone in my house (that would be 3 that I know of) with that "preacher guy" saying in his best holy-roller voice, "I have written down your prosperity date...blah, blah, blah."  I want to hunt that guy down and make him say 50 million Hail Marys.  Or listen to fingernails on a chalkboard for 5 years straight.  That'll teach him!  angry

...well looks like it's Oregon's turn for fires. We have several that flared up in the last day including a large and expanding one by Mt.Hood just east of the city. To make an already bad situation worse, a high wind warning was issued that will last through at least tomorrow with expected gusts of up to 55mph. In the time from when I went to the market to when I headed back home, the wind has picked up and it went from what looked like high clouds to a foggy afternoon but with a brownish tint. My eyes were stinging as well. If I knew how to attach some of the pics I took on the way home I would. Going to have to keep the wndows closed so goong to be a couple warm stuffy nights. At least one good thing, the battery in the smoke alarm went totally dead so it stopped making noise. Also decided to bite the bullet and go with Xfinity as they have a reasonable plan that offers a 100 mbps connection (hard wired) so I should be back online by Thursday at the latest. 15 - 25 mbps just wont xut it when I'm downloading half gig files.

I know Zbrush Core has a permanent license. I'm thinking of doing that with beginner Zbrush Udemy tutorials just to get started. That way when I subscribe to the full version I'll already be familiar with the UI and practiced sculpting enough. I'll probably do clothes and environments since there are already so many characters

I'd make cute dresses like lolita dresses with structure and make crinolines and bodices with 0 or at least very low dynamic strength so the effects would be different while sitting down. I'd also have different skirt layers so people can texture over them and if they decide to delete the crinoline it'd be like a whole new dress after dForcing with droopier folding. I'd do A line, Bell, and other styles. I'd include different morphs for length tho something tells me texturing might be the hardest part, and I'll want to include different patterns like steampunk themes. Maybe I'd do Swan Lake tutus with optional lights too. I'd also focus on some guy stuff too like different Kpop styles. I'd also do sci fi for girls and guys. There are so many characters I'll probably accidentally copy someone without knowing it so it's probably easier to be unique with clothes and environments

I'll also do what I can to avoid plasticy looking textures since a lot of clothes come with them especially socks but from what I can tell texturing is like a whole different skill

And I can't promise anything since I don't even know if I'll even get started but I can at least dream and good luck with getting back to Zbrush

I've been putting together a new computer build, so for the last couple weeks, I've had a procession of different components totalling ~$3000 USD in my cart at Newegg. I get an email from Newegg at least once a day reminding me that I have stuff in my cart, but they've never once offered any kind of discount or better deal to entice me to purchase now.

First time using Vue in like, ever.  I think version 11 and stuff was still "new" the last time I used it for real.

Seeing as how the 'basic' version of Vue is only $20 a month I thought it might be a great time to try reacquainting myself with the software. The only real things I'd be losing out on with this version are Export options and Compositing.  I'm not ready to start subscribing to Cinema just yet so the Integration plugin's irrelevant to me right now.  The 4k render limit's fine by me since I've rarely found the need to render higher than that.

I read that they can send you a big package of anything you've bought on Cornucopia before it went down which is nice since I had a bundle of stuff from there (Though not as much as I would have wanted le sigh),  and Quadspinner made ALL of their stuff free to use - including their exclusive Los Angeles Master Class course whew. Now if only I can track down where my xFrog plants are ashdfjgk  I know I had a few of their libraries somewhere around here ><

    Woops that's a lot of text :O

Don't be rediculous, there's never too many characters to go around~  Unless you meant human characters specifically in which case maybe?  Morph/texture packs in their case would always be welcome I imagine,  but on the critter side of things never too many to go around!  Just make sure there'a .cr2 version included <weh>  I'm sad at how all these cool new dragons and dinosaurs are "Sorry, no Poser use allowed!"  since I'm still heavily relying on a Poser Loading plugin with Cinema ;v;  (and D|S refuses to launch for me unless I log-in on a normal account I haven't used in over a year. First time I've run into a program that hates the Admin account haha)

There's a *really* good zBrush course I enrolled in last year while they were having a special promotion for it, I don't regret it one bit but I DO regret the lack of time I spent in it (and all the Q&A Livestream Sessions being while I was at work AAAAA)  but I've been really trying to get back into it.  Not yet at the sculpting phase of things, but soon maybe!

    https://www.3dcharacterworkshop.com/

    Best part is it's not a subscription, but lifetime access.  The Q&A thing I mentioned?  You can submit your model for review and he'll go over it in a livestream, talking about things that might be improved or etc.  Like last time he showed us a way to sculpt a jacket on a character and provided some interesting insights into the process.  Also, answering student questions in the chat!  I had a mystery or two of mine answered that I was pondering on for like ever finally addressed ;A;

I just replaced a 4TB drive with an 8TB drive in my laptop.  Now it has 12 TB total capacity.  The 4 TB drive will go into the desktop and replace a 2 TB drive there.

Now it's time to increase my backup drive capacity.
