Dana, I guess where we differ here is that I don't like anything that makes changes to my computer without my express permission. If it needs it, I'll OK it, but I want to be asked first, Having a limited Bandwidth, If I had known beforehand, I would have taken my computer to a local hotspot and told MS to go ahead. Then I wouldn't have the overage charges on my next bill.

By the way, I have my computer set up so that it has to notify me of updates available and wait until I tell it to do the updates. I have important things on here and often have a few of them open, so I don't want any problems. I just had a batch of stuff from Update Tuesday, and there were security patches for .NET stuff, so I closed Visual Studio before I let the updates run. I've discovered that the updates sometimes either fail or hang if I have it open.

    Complaint:
After a long period of MS trying to get me to "upgrade" to 8.1, they decided to force-feed it to me today without warning. After an hour of "Just A Few More Changes", it finally finished. Of course it broke Norton, but after another hour and a half of bashing my head against the keyboard, I finally got everything working the way I want it to (maybe).
Thanks to MS, now my Wireless BB is over my limit. >:-(
    I yam disgustipated.

....I hate it when they mess you up like that. They ASSUME (and you know what that means) everyone has unlimited BB coverage.

And I really hate it when these updates break your security software.

trying to schedule a doctor's appointment. Can't find the hours on their website for their medical campus. Ugg. I hate to call the number only to have the answering machine answer.

Could be worse, you could get a questioning machine.

Advertisements while you try to work out which number to press *hates*

I love the really bad music that sounds like it's being played on a Sears/Roebuck portable recorder from 1966, complete with frequent pops, crackles and dropouts. :)

I have mine configured to be the same...

... it just ignores me and the settings depending on how Microsoft prioritizes the update! >:-( The other night I was working (writing) and suddenly apps start closing on their own and Windows shuts down - and informs me that it is doing updates and to please wait!

... took darn near an HOUR before it rebooted. Totally lost my train of thought and work-flow...

    Good luck.

    oh, back btw ;)

my sister's surgery went *very* well - and even better it turned out the 'mass' was NOT cancer!!! Just some gland that develops in a fetus and is usually reabsorbed when you are a toddler that rarely just hangs around; so while very uncommon and a bit weird (which sums up a LOT about my sister, come to think of it!) it is perfectly normal / healthy and no worries.

the family is (of course) incredibly relieved.

house/pet sitting while she was in the hospital was... interesting:
    * her small dog (Pomeranian mix) will jump up on top of you when you lie down to sleep and sleep there...
    * two of her cats will do the same (though not at the same time, thankfully)... the other cat is (also thankfully) skittish around strangers and left me alone
    * my sister needs to clean out her fridge more often - I can not think of ANY circumstances where it is acceptable for jelly to smell like rotten milk and vinegar! (and don't try to tell me it 'suddenly' went bad... that bioweapon took TIME)
    * DirectTV/dish sucks... oh, it has (as the commercials say) unparalleled clarity - that static was so crisp and grainy you actually felt like you had eyefuls of sand! Well, when it wasn't losing signal and doing that digital smear - but even then those little squares were sharp enough to slice your retinas! And the customer service/tech support! Not to bother or burden you with having to deal with a person or call, it has it BUILT in to the unit - with such helpful tips as "there may be a problem with your satellite dish" and '... on 'rare' occasions the signal to your dish may be interrupted by rain, snow, clouds, gentle breezes, sunlight, birds flying over and gnats mating.' Of course, they also provide technical support through their web site if those somehow do not satisfy - which would be great except that, since you get your Internet access *through* the same system, you can't GET to the Internet.

... in short (too late, I know), if you want some good, uninterrupted quiet time to read a good book or three, get DirectTV!
