Some foods are just not great in the microwave, like cheese and things with mayonaise.  But, otherwise, it's great.  We don't normally use it to create main dishes, but reheating leftovers is great.  And the cheese sauce in Green Giant broccoli in cheese sauce seems to work out well.  The trick for some things is to use a lower power setting.  I've never tried one of thos mug cakes in the microwave, though.  I'm leary of things like that, and you must be careful with bread...too long and it comes out rubbery.  Some things, like bread, or fries, come out better if you put them in a brown paper bag.  Olive Garden gives you a special bag for their breadsticks, has a foil lining...comes out great!  Or do we put that in the regular oven?  Hmmm...

If it is a metal foil such as aluminum that is very bad for microwaves.

I hate wish! I ordered a battery pack but it didn't come with batteries. No big deal I can always put in the AA or AAA battery but no those batteries don't fit. I don't know what type of battery fits in it.

I think not if it is a lining and not exposed directly to the waves.  I could be wrong, though.

i luv the sacajaewa dollar coins.  ny subway gives change in sacajewas.  i like to play its pirate treasure dubloons.

...the ticket machines for our transit system here in Portland used to give change in SBA dollars, or what what were affectionately referred to as "Carter Quarters" since they were just slightly bigger than a quarter and easily confused.

When I moved from Wisconsin to Seattle 40 years ago, I took a cab from the bus station in Tomah WI to the Amtrak station   I handed the driver a "tenner"  telling him to keep 2$ (it was a 5.25$ cab ride) he handed me the change ,a couple ones and three quarters which I just stuffed in my back pocket.

While I was waiting for the train, I decided to get a can of Coke from a vending machine at the station and pulled two of the quarters out of my pocket to put in the machine.  They were rejected so I reinserted them after which it happened again.  I first thought they were Canadian (getting Canadian coins in change up north wasn't uncommon) but when I looked at them, I discovered they were SBA dollars (the taxi driver likely didn't realise what they were either).

So in the end ,the cabbie actually tipped me 1$..

As to the Sacagawea dollars I have several I set aside as they are rather nice looking coins.

Regarding this bitcoin et al. situation...   At one time in this country (long ago) each bank made its own money.  Massive confusion.  Laws were passed to eliminate the confusion and settle on one currency controlled by the government.  Can't anybody see this same situation brewing, but on a global scale?  If I were in the alternate money game, I'd be preparing to cash out.indecision

Several hundred years ago in Holland, tulip bulbs of an ever increasing number of types became the bitcoin, et al. of the day, the whole thing spiraled out of control.  Massive confusion.  Lot of financial ruin.  Can't anyone see the parallels?

Hmmm... this bomb I'm playing with seems harmless enough, I'll just ignore the ticking...surprise

....I primarily use the MW on lower settings for tasks like warming/softening tortillas (I put them between two large dinner plates, and they soften nicely), softening butter, popping popcorn, and yes even melting cheese   I rarely use it for actual cooking save for heating up frozen dinners & pot pies.

I miss having an Air Fryer, but the experience with the last one (which died shortly after the warranty expired) has kind of soured me on getting a new one.  There are more reputable ones but they are well over 100$ are designed more like small convection ovens, and thus take up more counter space (which I have very little to begin with). So for foods like fries and my garlic tarragon red potatoes, it's back to using the conventional oven.

You shouldn't... Fried air is really bad for your lungs... the oils will collect in the Aveolar ducts and then you will have to have a grease trap installed in your ribs and get regular scheduled drainings from one of those companies that takes away the grease from diners and restaurants and sells it to Burger King...

They charge an arm and a leg, and after one or two visits, you'll have no arms or legs left...  unless you are a sentient centipede or something...

Sorry if I never asked if that's the case...  I just assumed you are human or a cat or a terrestrial mammal of some sort... it's very rude and human centric of me... earth is rather boring and doesn't have as many forms of sentient beings as other planets, and humans are so loud about their alleged sentiency, I've got used to assuming everyone is either human or a cat with good typing skills...

But anyway... Don't fry your air.

It's also bad for the environment because lots of people set their houses on fire deep frying Turkeys and Penguins indoors, and I'm guessing frying air would be pretty dangerous because you'd probably suck in at least a pigeon or two, and they are so full of toxic waste, they'd probably just explode in a huge fireball... the furniture and plastic stuff from the fire would then help to fuel more climate change and your area is already under fire warnings, so technically the whole state could burst into flames and that could be pretty bad...

But if you are going to fry air, at least use canola or walrus oil which I think are less flammable...

Or maybe they are more flammable...

I don't think walruses are very flammable because you hardly ever see them on fire... my friend lives in Northern California and has elephant seals in his backyard and they are like walruses, and they never burst into flames...

He lives in redwood county right on the coast... I didn't want you to think he lives in like Sacramento in a subdivision and some nonflammable elephant seals moved in next door or someone threw a couple of them over his fence and he was too lazy to chase them off.

Well... anyway... stay healthy and don't fry air.

Okay, now that you are asleep, I'm going to bring this up...

Your new avatar is creeping the hell out of me...

I'm sure the doll is very adorable, but the picture is really close up and every time I glance over at your avatar I feel it is going to stab me...

    A lot...

Maybe if the picture was a little further back so that it showed more hair and face... like it is, I just feel like I was napping and opened my eyes and the doll is standing there three inches away with a huge meat cleaver just smiling at me...

I like the doll... she's cute...

Its entirely a me problem as lots of things are always trying to stab me, so I usually just dodge out of the way and move on, so I'll be fine...

    No worries.

Unless the doll made you do that...

In which case send us a signal of some sort.

But otherwise, sleep well and pleasant dreams.

I'm probably going to be dreaming about stabby dolls... but honestly that's nothing new.

    Anyway... Good night.

why don't people understand microwave food is disgusting.  my upstairs neighbor trying to tell me her microwave omelette is deliious.  i was like, if thats true she's cooking wrong.  is it too late to convince people to give up the microwaves and throw them all out?  it only takes a few minutes to put some food in a pan and stir until it's hot.  its not instant gratification but it only takes a few minutes.  i put a frozen mac n cheese in th pan, cook with the lid on, its done in less than 10 minutes.  cheese from the microwave is soo disgusting.  and these days cheese comes pre-shredded.  The decline of civilization started with the microwave.  you cant feel a sense of well  being when the food is disgusting.  theres no family conversations over meals, is just beeps.

    I'm with you mostly.

But I would never just throw away a good microwave.  My microwave is a tool that makes all other things go more smoothly and safely in my kitchen.

From warming up some butter to reheating a delicious salmon meal that I cooked earlier this week, the microwave helps me be MORE healthy.

I can't cook every day.  When I do, I often cook enough to feed myself for a couple weeks.  But I'm not going to eat cold steaks, chicken, or fish.  And I'm not going to run the oven just to reheat something I cooked the other day.  I live in Florida, for crying out loud and it gets hot here.  It's worse when I cook indoors, which is usually once or twice a week in the summertime.  I'm good at it, so cooking for myself is healthy.  Cooking every day?  No way; that's actually a big waste of resources.  Eating healthy every day?  Yes way.  I can do that by cooking more food a lot less often and making effective use of the tools at my disposal to safely store and reheat my work.

Furthermore, eating out all the time is not the fastest way to financial independence.  That is a goal near and dear to my heart.  Along with other things, like being responsible with my budget, preparing food and cooking for myself most of the time is on the path to that goal.

The microwave is just a tool.  For some busy families, it's an essential way to get food on the table quickly and efficiently.  Having a conversation can STILL be had even if a microwave is your main cooking tool; the two are really not connected.

It may be more effective for families to set "no internet" time periods, so that interraction can be had.  I once knew a violin teacher who required his students to agree to "no TV on weekdays" as a condition of having him for a teacher.  He made them and their parents agree to this in writing!  He insisted that this requirement freed up 3-5 hours of time for his students EACH NIGHT, or 15-25 hours weekly!  So magically, his students were better at getting their practice in and being ready for their weekly class with him, compared to students of other music teachers who would spend hours vegetating after school.

Saving time is good, especially if you have bigger goals in life.  Or maybe just more time-consuming goals.

All that to say what Cohole says, let's not conflate the cook with the tool.  wink

Oh, and I just bought a new microwave a few weeks ago, haha!  But this one is also a convection oven, so it can bake too!  It can't broil, but I have two outdoor grills and an oven with a broiler, so I've got broiling taken care of.  :)

The Tudors seem to have gone for "Your Grace" when addressing the monarch, but nowadays that would be for a Duke. The terms have shifted over time (and there has probably been some honorific inflation).

I had one too, but it turned out to be a woodpecker... Thanks for changing the avatar, but I was only joking/playing around... the doll is cute though. Although, you really should of taken a more menacing picture, just to mess with me... maybe holding a spoon in a threatening manner.

    Why a spoon?

    "Because it hurts more..."

(Thats a Robin Hood/Alan Rickman reference)...

Back to the migraine question... I can't tell if you have one, but one trigger for migraines (according to some studies) can be dehydration... Not like mummification grade dehydration, but just not drinking water frequently enough.

If you notice it tends to happen at certain times of day, especially at the longer gaps between meals, try drinking a little water and see if that helps or takes the edge off... it's probably not going to help, but it's just water, so the worst thing that'll come of it is you'll pee more.

Which in itself is a problem if you don't have great access to a bathroom or shrubs when you bladder starts bugging you for attention...

Also check for woodpeckers... and really annoying people like me... they definitely will give you a migraine.

    Anyhooz... Feel better.

Yup, a lot of people use it as a default... but that's like using a pair of pliers as your sole tool... to hammer a nail, remove a screw or lightly tighten a nut... only one of those three things it will do effectively... yeah, you can drive a nail, but not well... yeah, you can dig a screw out if you mangle the surface in the process... and if you are lightly tightening a nut, it's great... that's probably it's best application...

Most people don't bother to understand how a microwave works, the best ways to use it or what it's limitations are... but that's probably mostly due to societal assumptions and expectations which pinned on it the implication of it being a "miracle instant cooking device".

Not necessarily on topic, but still disturbing is how much microwave cookware is plastic... noooooooooo!... its incredibly inconvenient to transfer stuff to glass or ceramic cookware, but it's so much safer and healthier... especially with oily foods... heating plastics and oils together is so bad, there is so much potential for chemicals to leech out... directly into your food... and it really doesn't matter if it's "microwave safe"... plastic steamer bag, plastic lined cardboard, microwaveable PETE tray, styrofoam microwave cup, RONCO Miracle Egg Cooker 2000 or whatever... if it's got plastic it's bad for you... yes, cumulatively, but still bad.

Headaches are also a side effect of Metformin which is the 4th most widely prescribed drug in the US (for type 2 diabetes or insulin resistance).  I never (well, rarely ever) used to get severe headaches until I started taking Metformin about 5 years ago.  Now I get one about once every few weeks.  If I feel it coming on soon enough, I can kill it by taking a couple Tylenol with a big glass of water and taking about a 30-45 minute nap listening to calming music in the dark.enlightened But, then again, perhaps all I needed was the water?frown

Also, if you're a coffee drinker and you missed a regular cup, or somebody "slipped you a mickey" of decaffeinated java you could develop a headache from caffeine withdrawal.surprise
