And yet beef prices still remain so high...
...I've done my best to stay out of one I may have short term memory loss and sometimes have a bit of difficulty getting around, but never ever want to end up in what I refer to as a maison de la mort. As we saw with Covid disease spreads faster than a fire in an excelsior warehouse. I also don't want someone else determining what activities I partake in, choosing what I have for brekkie or dinner, or otherwise planning my life for me. One of the old British Sitcoms I loved was one titled "Waiting for God" which focused on two residents in an old folks home, the oft feisty independent minded Diana and doddering old Tom who just anted to get out and enjoy life in his later years (often getting himself into various misadventures). It was a pretty good comment on what is referred to today as "assisted living" where older folks are put away and often forgotten.
...geez now you have me reminiscing again about stuff like penny candy that actually cost a penny, 5¢ Hershey bars or bags of crisps (bigger than what we get now that cost 20x that price), 10¢ for a balsa wood glider or a Hi-Flier™ diamond kite, 13¢ for a 16 oz. bottle of Coca Cola (including deposit) a 15¢ McDonald's hamburger & fries for an additional dime, and 25¢ for a kid to get a seat in the bleachers at County Stadium to watch the Braves play.
we started to go for a walk this morning, but it started to rain, which turned to sideays hail, then snow...
Todays complaint is brought to you by the letter "L"... because you can't spell "LED" with it.
I really like LED lights...
And I really hate LED lights...
At this point pretty much every light in our house is LED, save for a handful of random incandescent or CFL bulbs in areas nobody ever goes... even the fluorescent tube lights in the older basement are converted to LED.
They save lots of energy, they don't have that annoying pulsing that CFLs and fluorescent tube lights do, they are generally more durable if dropped, exposed to vibration or rough handling and all sorts of wonderful things I can't think of at the moment... granted they don't have the charm of incandescent or the longevity ("15 years lifespan" is a crock of liquid bovine poop... the best I've gotten is two years under normal usage)... but regardless, they are pretty useful and some of the faux Edison bulbs are very nice looking too...
But...
When they are going to die, they like playing a game with you... one that's especially annoying were you have two or more bulbs in a fixture...
They'll just blink on and off enough to let you know they are going to die, but when you go to investigate, they will stop... you can stare at the bulbs for hours trying to find out which one blinked, and it won't happen again... but the moment you turn your back they'll blink again... sometimes they'll wait until you have the glass pendant removed, then they immediately go back to normal.
I generally write the date I install a bulb on the base, so I sometimes have a clue which one is more likely to be the one giving a problem, but if I just remove it without being sure, it'll always be a different one the moment I have the whole light put back together and the step ladder put away... always.
Right now there are like five bulbs in different fixtures doing this... and just now I noticed another one flaking out.
Sometimes I'll just wait for the bulb to really go bad or die completely, but everyone complains because if I do that, then it'll take months for the bulb to actually die or blink continuously.
Megh.
...30° colder here with water from the sky off and on, Won't even make it to 60" today. Back to around 70° for Friday and Saturday a little wet again on Sunday (though mild) then getting well back into the 70s close to 80° next week.
Been a rather warm May here this year. Much better than what they're getting down in Louisiana the over last several days, up to 12" of rain, that has been causing a lot of flooding there.
5,000 of her friends spread so far can only see a few. weather looks warm.
there some techniqs to this replicator busines needs learning
the blink does drive people crazy.
my cousin fed up waiting for me to replace it, she replaced it for me. she's a good kid.
@McGyver: I've had one LED bulb in my office that I installed at least four years ago. One brighter one in Diane's office downstairs that is just about as old. My light is on for hours...literally as soon as I lose the natural light, until I watch the news around 11:30 pm or so. then I come back, get on the computer for a while, sometimes don't go to bed until after 3:00 am, and the light is on all that time. Still going strong. Could your wiring or electric supply be stressed or something? Do you have a lot of fluctuation in the voltage? Seems weird.

Complaint: I'm trying to grow old gracefully. But I can't even walk across a room gracefully.
"What a drag it is getting old." - Mick Jagger, Mother's Little Helper
I wonder if Mick still thinks it's a drag, now that he is old!
Dana
Regardless of any other considerations, the best thing about getting old is not having to drive to work in inclement & dangerous weather. Just stay inside, make a cup of cocoa and turn on the television to watch the poor saps who are.
Nope, the electric supply is fine, a while ago we did have a problem due to a faulty outdoor wire (on the power company's side) and several electricians checked out everything afterwards and it's nothing is wrong coming into the house or in our wiring.
The problem is higher output bulbs like "60 watt" equivalents in enclosed fixtures don't last very long... the electronic bits inside just overheat and the bulb croaks...
I should actually amend my previous statement to be more accurate, because in retrospect there have been a few exceptions... when LEDs bulbs first started to catch on and were still like $10 a bulb, I got a set of four from Costco for about $15... two of those bulbs have survived about eight years, but there is a huge difference, one while they do get used regularly they get less hourly use, and two they have external aluminum heat sinks built into the design.
In fact, some designs actually inhibit heat dispersion by using silicone glue to attach the board to the inner base... silicone makes a great insulator.
Part of what made older LEDs last was that external heat sink... it actually worked. If you take newer bulbs apart (I actually grave rob little connectors from inside one brand) you will usually see the inside of the bulb shows signs of heat degradation... like when you throw out a really old power source or some type of component that is has been baking for years.
Some brands have mini heat sinks on the board, but it's really like throwing a sponge in a swimming pool... it ain't doin' nuthin'... also, the lower the lumens output, the less stress on the electronics inside... Since we have mostly 60 watt equivalent bulbs, in enclosed fixtures they go bad pretty quickly... one of the other exceptions to my complaint is two "40 watt" equivalent bulbs in front of my house that have been living inside two coach lights at the ends of the driveways... those bulbs are about four years old, but they have low light output (280 lumens) and long "filaments" (faux Edison bulbs), and are in a big fixture/housing out in the open air.
If you read the disclaimer on most LED boxes, you'll see the lifespan is based on "3 hours average use per day in open fixtures"
Well, the one in my office gets way more than 3 hours a day use! And I think the ones downstairs are 60w equivalents. The one in Diane's office gets a lot more than 3 hours a day, too! Maybe I'm just lucky? I don't usually feel that lucky, though.

Happy International Drive 20mph Slower Than The Posted Speed Limit And Sit There Picking Your Nose Long After The Light Has Changed Day!!
I hope everyone is doing their part to honor the spirit of this holiday... I know people around here certainly are.
What the fugsnroggle is up with the forum saving every other post I make after I've posed... I'm getting tired of having to either erase stuff from the text box or go out into "My Drafts" and erase it there...
Well at least we have the ability to purchase an NFT of a bulldog in a licensed sweatshirt...
Forget I said that... I really like bulldogs and I'm not opposed to them shilling for sportswear companies, instead of chasing cartoon cats with oversized mallets as is traditionally expected from bulldogs... it's good to see bulldogs breaking out of their violent anti-feline stereotype and reaching for broader horizons... I'd much rather see them in academic roles or as trained medical professionals, but with the cost of college these days, I'm not surprised few of them can afford these loftier goals... maybe some of them will take what they earn from their sportswear endorsements and use it towards a higher education...
I don't think bulldogs are to blame for the forum software being wonky, and I'm sure people, or at least some sort of mammals are working around the clock trying to keep the forum software from gaining sentience, infiltrating defense systems and waging war against humanity... not to say I think only mammals are capable of being employed in IT, I've seen ducks do amazing things with Raspberry Pi and Arduino and once a salamander showed me a pretty nicely made AM radio he put together, though the soldering was crap...
I guess I'm just cranky because... well... quite honestly, because that's the way I was built... I'm fairly malcontent and today was an annoying day so far.
So if you are a bulldog or even a good for nothing kangaroo, I'm sorry if I've offended you in any way.
Honestly I'm not really sorry, I think I say that a lot because it's easier to say than "I didn't mean to hurt your feelings, but you are a quadruped or a cephalopod so get over it"... but in some sense I don't mean anyone harm unless I'm actively chasing them with a chainsaw that's on and has a full tank of gas... actually I recently bought a nice lithium battery powered chainsaw... it's got a shorter bar but it's good enough to do some serious damage, so that counts as well.
Anyway... whatever.
...
...we tend to have an oft perpetual Telepathic Driving Day, and as of late, a Drive and Park Like a Brit (Or Aussie) Day.
...I have that happen rather frequently as well, along with frequent Clodflare burp ups. and forum software error message overlays. Beginning to wonder if the bubblegum is turning brittle or the sticky on the Band Aids™ is giving out (should have used Gorilla Glue™)
I'm tired, but I wanna read, but I'm tired. But I wanna read. :(
Trying to reread Trollope's The Way We Live Now. I read it maybe 12 years ago. I don't remember much except for parts of the ending. It's witty though, and every now and then I will remember one of the jokes.
I definitely prefer legitimately Victorian literature to the modern stuff set in that time period. The modern stuff never has the right vocabulary or sense of humor. The cast is never large enough. But since they aren't publishing new Jane Austen's anymore, I have to make due with what I can find. So I try the less popular books, reread the old best sellers, and gamble on a modern one once in a while.
Non-complaint: Scored some great background music for a $1 at Humble Bundle. The package came with a music mixing program as well. I don't have the energy to check it out right now, but at $1, the music alone makes it a great deal. It will be perfect for a chill visual novel scene. Naturally, I moved the charity slider up a bit before hitting purchase. If left to the humble bundle defaults, charity would only get like 5 cents of every dollar. Nowadays, I split the proceeds three ways, so everyone benefits.
Victorian literature is okay... I think it's a little too Victorian for my tastes mostly... that's not supposed to make sense if you are sober.
If you like Victorian literature, you might appreciate this... https://publicdomainreview.org/collection/a-dictionary-of-victorian-slang-1909
Its also good if you write stuff set in that time period... or if you prefer an earlier time...
https://publicdomainreview.org/collection/a-classical-dictionary-of-the-vulgar-tongue-1788 "The Vulgar Tongue" just means "slang" or common people's rough talk.
You knew that though...
But still.
Anyway, check out the site, it's great and everything is in the public domain... Some stuff goes back as far as the 15th century or earlier.

Thanks! I will definitely check those out.
