Buying more G9 or G8/8.1 Daz products these days?

Just generally curious about what everyone is finding themselves more likely to do.

Unless something really spectacular comes out that I have really been needing for G8, I am only buying G9 products.

  • I'm generally avoiding G9 only products. Mad King (Oso Elder) was an exception.

  • Barely buying anything because I'm more occupied with building what I need, but sliiightly more G8+.

G8, with the exception of some Rawart characters that I intend to buy. I haven't even bought V9/M9.

It really had to be super special, to buy G9. G9 is not for me.

I'm exclusively buying G9 stuff, but beyond core character releases, there hasn't much G9 clothing I can use, unfortunately. Most individual item releases seem to be either dresses or lingerie. A few weeks ago there was a day when I saw a couple of dresses in the lineup along with an outfit that included pants and a jacket, and I thought, "Okay, without looking, the pants are going to be for 8/8.1." Sure enough!

I know it's just a roll of the dice when using premade content--it's never guaranteed that anyone will make what I want. Since I plan to continue using G9 indefinitely, I've just diverted a lot of my time/hobby budget into learning to create my own stuff.

Unless there's something extra special or necessary (as cheap as possible) buy-in for G9, it's G8/G8.1 for me.

The torso of G9 is still a big turn-off.

Didn't buy anything for G9 and don't intent to.

I didn't know which; so, I just tallied the first page of my Product Library, and it's: G9 - 12, G8/8.1 - 11. The G9 products are utilities & Core Figures---with some outfits that were on deep discount. After leaving 9,000+ items out of my recent DIM installation (many of them G8Fs), only superlative items are getting in, because I don't want something I'll never need wasting my time even having to hide it in DIM.

I still haven't actually downloaded the g9 freebies. I got some 8.1 stuff on a recent purchase. I might get around to all that eventually, but I still don't feel a great need for it. I seem to have hundreds of other figures and outfits already, so why bother? >_>

Last new item: https://www.daz3d.com/dforce-urban-outfit-for-genesis-8-and-81-males I tried to work with G9M, but until there's a fix for his chest (which I doubt will ever happen) it's a no for me. The area under and between the breasts usually gets lines and/or an over-defined look that doesn't is in contrast to the rest of his definition. It's also carrying through to a lot of the clothes.

Didn't buy a single G9 product I think. Didn't buy much here at DAZland recently anyway, as the sales seem nearly fully connected to G9 items being needed.

  • I've bought some G9 basics and a few bundles that came with great deals, but have been going crazy with the sales from Nov/Dec/Jan that priced G8 and G8.1 so well. G8/8.1 and their wide existing catalog suits my workflow much better, so I'm happy to just stick with those. And a large part of my hobby seems to be shopping the sales, so G8/G8.1 and older stuff wins out there too! wink

  • G9 just doesn't "do" it for me so I'm sticking with G8 and hoping G10 will be better. If a prop set and/or G8 pose set comes on sale that I could use then great. Otherwise, my wallet will stay closed.

  • I jumped on G9 when it came out, but found it limiting and ultimately swapped to a G8 to G9 workflow. Bought loads of G8 stuff to aid that, but recently the G9 stuff is getting more interesting. Kind of paused for now because I reckon G9 products is where it'll be at soon.

  • I've bought the V9 base figure and the Voss hair that was released with her. That's my sum of G9 purchases. I am seriously unconvinced that G9 is an improvement for the longer range images I tend to do. For portraits & the like, G9 repays the effort, but at the moment I can see little advantage for more distant images I do. So.. I try to buy as little as I can get away with, all G8, no G8.1 (mostly because 8.1 was the prime figure for such a short time so there's much less content), and no G9.

    Regards,

    Richard

Mostly G8 and 8.1. Got the basics for 9, but I have enough G3-8.1 stuff to keep me busy for years. I will probably start getting more into G9 as time passes, but will probably take a year or so like I did with the switch from 3-8.

  • Aside from the G9 Starter Essentials (which I actually downloaded accidentally when downloading 20+ other items in DIM) and some freebies over Christmas (which I only picked up to see if they'd count as "New Releases" and lower the price of some G8 items I actually wanted), the only G9 product I've actually paid for is the Exo Raptor, which I picked up the other day (mostly because the movie "Pitch Black" is a guilty pleasure of mine).
In total, I own just 5 G9 products: the Start Essentials, a hood, a nightgown, a set of earrings, and the Exo Raptor. The Exo Raptor is the only one I've paid for, and I used my Monthly Coupon on that.

Funny thing is, a few weeks ago I got a message about "exclusive" deals that read:
"Thanks for showing your support for Genesis 9! Because you own so many G9 products, here's an exclusive deal just for you so you can buy even more G9 products!".

If I'm getting messages thanking me for buying "so many" G9 products and offering me deals to buy more G9 products, you have to wonder how "exclusive" the offer is, or just how popular G9 actually is.

G9 is clearly Meta Human inspired. As Meta Human, Genesis 9 is also very portrait centered.

I've seen renders of Victoria 9, Angela 9, & Freja 9 (fewer for her) that are more facially photoreal than any Daz characters I've ever seen. If Victoria 9 didn't have hardwired freckles, my G9 issues would be severely lessened,

I am not talking out G9 to others. I am only giving MY opinion on G9.

  • I personally have zero interest in g9. G8 has sooooo much content and so much to offer for my art needs. Maybe if g9 gets some decent content and food shaping content. G9 isn't that impressive of a leap. G8 forever!

    This!

  • I don't think G9 is going to grow as much as G8+. I think it's not going to take very long until G9.1 or G10. Also, it simply isn't improved enough and aside of gender-neutral mesh it doesn't do anything more than G8+ is already doing.

Simply put, I don't think it justifies spending more for a content comparable to what already exists for G8+ and the figure base might be replaced much sooner than G8+ was succeeded by G9.

    That's pretty much all.

I have noticed that all the major things I would want to make use of Genesis 9 are never on sale, ie: shaping morphs, makeup, conversion tools, etc. So I've been primarily sticking with 8.1 myself.

Mostly buying G9 unless G8/8.1 stuff I like is on serious sale. I already have a ton of stuff for G8/8.1.

Finding myself turning to G3 if I need variation, but G8 is center-stage - G9 will only be considered once Ultimate Pose Master is an option :)

DS5 is about to be released (soon), and I wouldn't be surpriced if there wasn't at least a new revision coming with it or soon after it.

  • Since I use Face Transfer characters almost exclusively, I'm still G8-based and not all that interested in specific commercial figures. But I have bought a lot of G9 bundles when the price is right to get the bundle products.

Soon meaning "Daz Soon?" That could be sometime next year.
