  • Here's Owen in Chinatown. I think he may be grateful he has a third lung

I don't know much about comics or most other mainstream culture things, but this render looks to have that superhero comic vibe =)

And I'm curious... technically, where did they put that third lung?

  • Came up with some skin settings I'm pretty happy with. Jayce skin, mix of Jayce and other morphs. (Jayce is preteen, I 'aged' him up a little)
    Experimenting with some knit stuff.
The boulder to the right and the wood uses my WTP shaders. I would have preferred to use a texture for stuff that close to the camera, but the existing textures were too low resolution.
The terrain uses a two-layer mix shader, based on normals. The actual textures are from TerraDome3, I think.

That terrain looks cool =) Would the render time skyrocket if you added extra layers and used a noise mask in addition to the slope?

And knits, ooh they're capricious but you did a lovely job... I'd just add either an opacity map (if it's a "lacier" type of knit) or a diffuse strength map (for winter clothing), though. In-between the yarn threads, light gets absorbed quite a lot, and they are voluminous enough to give a lot of self-shading.

In Iray, I think what I might try is plugging one of the knit maps into Reflectivity to reflect (heh) that absorption. Hmm.

I had to think about the answer. The aliens who replaced his lungs thought two were simply inefficient and certainly not enough lung power to survive on their planet.  So either they completely removed his current set and placed in 3 smaller but high-powered  alien ones, probably replacing the ribs and the spine to allow for more flexibility similar to a cat's flexible spine. Or they put something more alien in there such a set of lungs with horizontal chambers.

In any case, he has 3 lungs that work great, and allow him to survive in more hostile environments. Since they also regenerate they are quite useful to him. =-)

Sadly I'm not on here as much as I'd like, but I do scroll through the board just to see what's new, and usually go through the gallery page and like the ones I like. Sadly @mal3Imagery removes his after a while and goes and puts them on DeviantArt (tsk, tsk wink). I really (like REALLY) love your characters, I'm just always too late to like them on the gallery pages.

I always feel a bit stupid posting an image here, since there are SO many great artists posting here @Butch, and I don't want to drop names @Serene Night because I'm scared I'll miss someone @nemesis10 or forget someone @Knittingmommy or something @KevinH or upset someone for not mentioning them @Sorel, so, no naming names.

    Wish some of the people who post in the gallery section would post their work here, like @Bliss - http://www.daz3d.com/gallery/#users/1629/.  ;

Aaaanyway, I'm working on creating my own 'character', which is a first, as I usually just render the guys out of the box, just darkening their skin a bit (c'mon, I like a guy with a deep tan). I'm just not too sure about what 'creating a character' involves. Is it just morphs? Or is it more, like skin swapping (am I the only one that thinks about Silence of the Lambs when I hear skin swapping?) or crating your own maps, or mixing various guys' shapes together (sounds like something from a sci-fi horror) and stuff like that?

  • It's ok gerteramus ;)

    Here's a new render.  Serenity

Oh my! I would ask how that toga thing is staying on in spite of gravity but it is obvious he is a god and thus using Divine Right to make gravity mind its own business in this case. ;-)

Well, @SereneNight, as long as the rest of Owen works normal, I guess the 3 lungs are all right. May even give him some staying power.

I like you image @Mal3Imagery. I'd ask if you used Dynamic Cloth to create the drape. But I think you already said you render in blender, so I suspect you did it there.

I don't know what your are talking about @gesterasmus. I took a look at your gallery, and your images are amazing! I can't believe you mentioned me in your list. I keep looking at the list to make sure I'm not imagining it. I feel exactly like you said in your post sometimes. I usually don't generate a lot of comments and then I think my images are probably bad and stupid and I shouldn't have posted them. I've told myself more than once that I'm not going to do it anymore. (I just looked again to verify that I was really mentioned.)

@gerterasmus  Well, I guess I'll just take you when I can see you then.  I do miss seeing some of your guys, though.  I won't name names, either  ;) , but luckily we do have some great talent that keeps uploading images so we muster on.  I don't know why my name is up there, though, as I just muddle through and hope no one realizes I'm just winging it.  ;)   One of these days, I'll get better.  Promise.

I've been working on a new guy render and he's giving me fits because I'm trying out a new technique that I don't know if it's possible to do and, since I've never seen it done, there are no freakin' tutorials!!!  Argh!!!

Good luck on the character creation.  I haven't done any sculpting or morphing of new characters so I'm no help there!  I've only mixed dials to make my own characters so far.

Anyway, just pop in when you can and show us a pic now and then or just say hi.  You can always PM me, too, if you ever want to chat about nothing in particular.  Miss you sweetie!

  • @mal3Imagery  Love Serenity!  Nice work with that.  I especially love all of the bubbles.  :)

@gerterasmus  Thankyou and I think you're underestimating yourself.  A lot!

As for creating your own characters?  It's easy and fun.  I like my models to be stocky, not fat, large ears and solid nose.  So, I remove all morphs from the base figure, add my three "must haves" and then play with every dial possible.  Once happy with the shape, I decide what skin and eyes suit best, then add suitable hair.  After a further two or three weeks tweaking, he's ready.  I then cheat and make the new character a base for any future models - if anyone notices, I just say they're brothers wink

@mal3Imagery surely wet fabric would have been more seethrough?  devil

It's too late for my afternoon nap crying, so I'll pretend this is me.  Oddly enough, my favourite part of this image is the dodgy seam on his briefs.  It's not intentional, I noticed it when subd was switched off.  So, I rendered twice then a little photoshop layer mask fun.

  • I have NO idea what you guys are talking about, @Knittingmommy and @KevinH. As I said, I'm not naming anyone at all, and if I didn't run out of coherent sentence construction, there's a LOT more people that I wouldn't have mentioned.

@Butch You serious? My images are always so dark. Love the people who have these well-lit, bright images. Guess I'm scared of the light. LOL. And thanks for the info.

  • @gerterasmus  Hey, buddy! Good to see you and with a great image!  I really like that!  I am ashamed to say I have never gotten Level 19 to look that awesome!.  Great guy!  Love the lighting!

@Knittingmommy That Level 19 looks TERRIBLE. I spent over a week setting up the scene and editing image maps for the level, mixing up shaders and whatever else, and the day I wanted to start rendering, DAZ found the file to be corrupt and couldn't open it. So I just slapped some things together in a few hours and rendered it. Busy rendering a new image now, and I have six back-up copies of the file saved, just in case. LOL!

    good render in the doorway

  • Thank you. :)  I liked how the warm light bled over his torso and led into the cool lighting from the surrounding ambient light.

  • @Mal3Imagery:

Nice underwater render. He seems quite content there, despite the fact that he is sinking rapidly. Hopefully he will be rescued soon- or will rescue himself.

@KevinH Yeah, he looks normal except for being a bit more pale than average. Plus the Stamina boost of the extra lung comes in handy.

@Butch: Like your reclining guy. Like the lighting and those underwear. I've realized lately just how narrow my selection of guy undergarments really are- and how most of them don't look as good as I'd like. He looks very relaxed and enjoying himself.

@gerterasmus  Oh, I had that happen with my wolves image!  Talk about frustration!  I learned, too, to have multiple backups after that, too, though!  As for Level 19, I haven't tried in awhile, but the last time I used it with a bunch of bots for a render, I was not happy with my results.  Your version looks much better than mine.  I know a whole more about lighting and have some new toys so I may have to give it a go again soon.  :)

    @DarwinsMishap  Yes!  Looking good!

@Butch  I'm wondering what he's dreaming about with that little smile!  Good dreams, I hope!  :)

  • ButchButch Posts: 798

@DarwinsMishap - the lighting and skin work good together and the result is very good.

@Serene Night - thanks.  Lighting is full sun, shadow from the back wall and turned out surprisingly well.  As for underwear and speedos, they're not very common, especially with the bottom fully covered and there's a separate waist and thigh material zone.  These are the M6 OOT Intimates.

@Knittingmommy - He's dreaming of, maybe, receiving a bigger clothing allowance, so he can buy more than old undies.

Here's another Alien. I'm a sucker for mer-people, and wanted to try this old M4 Reciecup skin on Michael 7.  I liked it... Except for the forehead markings. I may have to try to remove those at some point. They look distractingly blurred. But I think the rest came out really well.

  • He looks good, Serene!  I like the skin.  Not sure about those brow ridges.  I like them, but they don't really seem to go with the textures.  I'm not sure if blurred is the right word.  Maybe if a couple of the ridges were darker like the spots they might go with it better?  Just an idea.  I don't render a lot of aliens which surprises me when think about considering most of my stories have aliens in them.

Yeah, I would've preferred more of the large spots I think- darker. He has some of the painterly markings on his arms but they are less obvious than the paint on his forehead.

  • So, this is my character that I'm working on. Still some sparkly bits on the metals and stuff, but it was only 53% rendered after 10h 10min 22sec and I need my laptop for work now. Aanyway, not tooo good with names, so I took the obvious one and named him Touko.

I reaally should have gotten the headgear for Gen2 & 3 males, but when payday came (along with a bit of an increase) I went a bit wild and spent almost 1/5 of my salary on DAZ (funny enough, I didn't buy any clothing items, though I only have about 4 or 5 items for G3M), and the headgear was a bit too expensive. And 2 days later the whole freakin' store went on sale. LMAO!

Any tips on things to do to make Touko more 'unique' would be much appreciated. And I know the lighting sucks, so please, don't mention that. blush

    This is seriously cool, Serene.

I agree. That skin is gorgeous and his body shape is delicious. cheekyyes

  • Hah! Glad you like it DarwinsMishap and Zombietaggerung. I admit I'm a fan of the humanoid alien. I do as many as I can since they are sort of fun to do something different.

Here is a second version. This time without the forehead markings, and with more overpainting and painterly effects. Ah well, next up I am going to play with the Blind Demon figure.

  • @gerterasmus  He looks good.  I like interesting characters and he definitely looks like one.  I'm terrible at giving advice, though, so I'll refrain.  I do like the comparison posing with your figure and the picture in the back!  Love that!  I keep wanting to get more hats for the guys and it always seems as if there is something more I want when they come up for sale!  Which means, I have relatively few hats in my library!

    Wowweee! That hair is amazing!!
