I'm pretty sure I remember trying this, and it didn't help. But when I was running the tests I reported above I did try changing G8M to a T-Pose and baking the rotations, (via Joint Editor tool,) and then applying something that wouldn't fit before. The legs of the pants and the arms of the shirt were offset the same as if I hadn't changed the pose, even though the side-to-side of the thighs and the bend of the arms were in the "zero" position.
Mike 8
As noted above, AutoFit has had a number of updates in DS 4.9.x.x - these include the ability to include posing information in the clone, to cope (for example) with the difference between a T pose and an A pose. The AutoFit in 4.8.x.x won't know how to use this information and will ignore it, so leg and particularly arm areas will not convert effectively between Genesis 8 and earlier versions in 4.8.x.x
So ... time to bite the bullet and upgrade. Wish me luck, I think I'm gonna need it. Last time I tried 4.9 it was a Beta and drove me nuts. The thing simply refused to pay any attention to where my content was, insisted on dumping everything into a cloud -- or connect or whatever the heck it was called -- folder on my C drive, where I absolutely do NOT keep content, and then tried telling me all the stuff I could plainly see right there in my library wasn't actually installed. There was no way to get it to stop doing that so I got rid of it and stuck with 4.8. Anyway, I kept my old installers so if it does bork sideways & inside out, hopefully all is not lost.
You could install the beta, which is the same as the release build. You will, however, need to check the content directories then.
I have 4.9.4.122 version, but all my efforts to autofit G3 clothing to G8 male or female led to no result.
Well. I am now on 4.9 regular, not beta, and so far everything is where it ought to be. Now my G8M can run around in more than just his skivvies, he borrowed this outfit from G2M and he likes it much better than the dress. But he still does not know how he got here or where the heck are his shoes.
Still working on this guy.
He looks great!! Nicely done, DM!
Oh yeah, that's definitely the boy your mama warned you about.
Brothers Genesis
I don't have Michael 8 yet, but G8M, has some spectacular expressions. But Eddie is happy to have a new brother.
I can easily see the family resemblance between them. Also good they can raid each other's closets -- except apparently for shoes -- and share the same hairstylist. Michael 8 has made a couple of trips in and out of my cart yesterday & today; I still can't decide between the Starter or Pro bundles. Meanwhile, I am reworking Jake here to use on Genesis 2/3/etc. He began his 3d life as good ol' M4 in Poser and don't know much about this iRay thing but having seen it on G8 is anxious for a makeover. While I got his morph down perfect (just need to adjust his height) there are unfortunate incidents involving his skin. Witness the yellow splotches and streaks all over his chest. The texture is Morris's Lazarus expansion and yes, I am using the Daz Studio Mats not Poser's -- that was the first thing I checked. Does anybody have a clue what's going on because I sure don't.
Boyd in the rain. Did not make the backdrop. It was a background that came free with one of Ron's brushes. This was my first attempt at making a Gen 8 male.
That's lovely, really close to classic pinup style shading.
Depends on your mom - that's the kind of boy my mom would actually bring home. lol And I'D be the one wagging my finger at her. hahah Thank goodness she finally met my awesome step dad and settled down.
For real though, DarwinsMishap always does such awesomely hot "bad boys"! Rawr! heheh
Every time I see Boyd I can't but think of that guy from The Man from U.N.C.L.E. or NCIS guy, Ducky.
Same kind of strawberry blonde hair! Yeah I can see that
Maybe it's just me, but I've had very good luck with shoes with the G8's so far. One of the best fitting pairs of footwear on my G8F are the boots from the G2F Super Hero suit - and they're high heels even :P. This is the boots on Tara 2 for G8F
Laurie
Have not yet tried with the G8 female yet but unless my copy is broken, G8 male has no footwear option at all in his autofit menu. I tried using full body but the shoes just moved alongside him. In one instance they were nearly a foot (that's 30 centimeters) away from where he was standing.
Oh, are you still using an older version of DS? I've only had that happen with one item so far (and I've tried a lot). And I'm using .122
Have you tried leaving it at "None" when autofitting? That's normally what I do since using anything else would cause DS to crash for me. Haven't tried anything else since DS updated the other day.

Gave my new M8 guy a brand new hair cut :D
Boyd looking good :D
I'm loving that new haircut! Very nice.
Just to clarify: you're using the Studio materials provided with Lazarus, but trying to render in Iray? Because if that's the case, they probably won't work well without a lot of tweaking. Lazarus lacks SSS/Translucency maps and normal maps, for one thing, which help Iray look better on human textures. (Also, those settings are old. Really old. They use .ds files!)
Beautiful Skin Iray provides some of the maps and settings you'd need, and for M4, M5, G2M, M6, G3M and M7 UV sets, and the equivalent female sets.
I thought that might be the case and was looking about for a fix, figured there must be one somewhere because of the whole backwards compatibility thing and people having so many nice M4 & V4 skins in their collections. In Poser I used Easy Skin 2 to fix him up with SSS and all that other stuff so he looks really good. But since Iray doesn't grok Poser materials I am obviously out of luck. I'll have to check out that Beautiful Skin thing you mention since he's just not himself without Lazarus.
Unless maybe there's a similar texture you could recommend that's already set up for Daz & Iray? Just not too young or too hairless, please.
I do love that hair, but then all your characters are ridiulously gorgeous.
I am a huge fan of NGS Anagenessis 2. It does an astonishing job at making good skin with nothing more than a color map. (Sometimes I like to use bump anyway)
It sometimes requires a little tweaking, but it's the easiest way to get good results I've found
You can try Russell HD for M7, which is not at all young, though a bit hairless below the neck. (Actually, I think you may be somewhat out of luck on the hairless issue for Genesis 3. Also, since you don't have Michael 7, his shape will look different, but he uses Base Male UV, so his texture will work.) You could also try Ivan 7; once you're a bit more comfortable, I would strongly recommend getting his separate HD morph. (If you're a PC member, I'd also recommend waiting until he goes on sale again, which he certainly will next month for the PC Anniversary sale at some point.)
Also, if you like rough and tough looking guys, you can try William by Darwins Mishap; again, the hairless thing will be an issue, but he's quite definitely not a young pretty boy (and has an "older" morph, as well).Uses BaseMale UV and you only need the Genesis 3 head and body morphs, and not any specific shape.
I was going to suggest that you might also look at the Genesis 3 males by RedzStudio at Renderosity; Luca for G3M definitely gets you around the hairless issue -- though maybe not the "too young" part. HOWEVER ... don't do Renderosity at the moment. As of this post, they appear to be down hard, and the site is either blank or nonresponsive, depending on browser. They tend to be profoundly uninformative about security issues, so ... definitely not there for a bit.
I've been trying some experiments with Lazarus and Iray, but I'm not at that computer at the moment. I'll put up something when I get back and can render them out.
I like Anagenessis 2 as well. I didn't mention it here purely because, if you haven't been purchasing Genesis 3/8 characters and want to try something out with your existing library, Beautiful Skin Iray is the only way you're going to get general normal and SSS/translucency textures and settings. It's easier to go from BSI to Anagenessis, when you have a bit more experience, than to go from Anagenessis 2 to BSI.
Thanks for all the tips. I am still playing catch up on the G3s having had to pass on them when they first came out due to Daz and my computer not cooperating. Fortunately the latest Studio version appears to have fixed that issue, meanwhile I have quite the learning curve with Iray and what will or won't work properly with it. Will check out those characters and see how close they come to my Jake. Also I notice there are several versions of Beautiful Skin in the store, do I need one for each generation or what? My most used textures are M4 and V4 skins, some of which I have already converted to Genesis 2. I'd like to be able to use them on 3 & 8 also if possible but at the moment budget is tight so I'm looking for the most versatile option, hopefully under 20 bucks. Anything else will have to wait for a coupon and the next big sale.
I poked around over there and didn't have any issues, though I didn't put anything in my cart or try to checkout. I have Oh My Body Hair from RedzStudio which I can recommend. And it's currently at 50% off. I do recommend you checkout using Paypal. I've had my debit card compromised more than once after buying at 3D stores other than DAZ, Rendo being one of them. I don't know where the card was compromised, but since I've started using Paypal at all the 3D sites I buy from, my card has not been compromised. (An ounce of prevention, and all that...!)
