The problem with RingTFM is the lack of a full M.

Which is why I personally suggest the Monkey Method.

Imagine yourself as a curious monkey, and try everything with the idea "What happens if I do THIS?"

I'm more of a "JIT" (Just In Time) learner. My head is so full of stuff that I literally have to let something go to make room for anything else! (ahhh face) I can't count the number of things I've had to just forget in order to make room to learn new things.. so now I just crank along and learn new skills as needed, and drop old ones as they become obsolete.

I might try just poking around once I get some baseline skills in. Urgh.. it'll be a while. I do need a forest, a jungle, and a plain with flowers and plants as well as city scenes. I'm gong to need a swamp, too.. I think I have a swamp.. urgh.

I manually rebuilt the CMS database this weekend and now DS 4.6 find about, erm, 2/3 of my content (blank face). Better but no cigar.

XFrog plants downloaded - will install tonight! Yaay more plants!

Also picked up a Transylvania castle construction kit from Rendo, I'm going to need one. I also need swamp environments and huts for the Voudoun priestess in Argentum Noctis, they're in my Daz wishlist now.

I might make Argentum Noctis an illustrated serial instead of a full-on Webcomic so I can get into production sooner, plunking in stills to help show the story environment is a LOT less time-consuming than trying to crank out several panels a week, especially since I have a job (until I win the Lotto, anyway).

Blech work insanity. Dozens of new units of this one product suddenly failed testing and I get to try to figure out why. Argh.

i've heard of Xfrog plants before. I think I saw an advertisment (banner ad) or promotion on a third party website.

Free plants! W00t! You can never have too many free plants!!! (grin)

Can really suck up processor time tho

I'm OK with that. I grabbed all the free 3D OBJ plants I could find, they'll make a nice addition to Lisas Botanicals.

Too bad DS4.6 doesn't have instancing.. I smell a feature request! (evil grin)

More cawwwwwwwwwfeeeeeeeeeeee, I'm damp n tired inside and out. (frownie)

It does. I was told that just last week. And also something called Geometry Shells. I wonder if they're good with a nice marinara sauce? *raspberry*

Yeah, I need to play with instancing over the weekend. Won't save on render times but can save big on resources when putting together, say, an army of zombies.

I prefer my geometry shells in a nice pesto sauce, though! (neener face)

Also picked up a Transylvania castle construction kit from Rendo,

I didn't care for that one, the textures are way too repetitive, too obvious...both on the stone walls and the boardwalk planks.

Complaint: I hate making irrevocable decisions that end up permanently cutting off a branch of possibility for me. I prefer to keep my options open, to try to be able to go back and try something I passed on, later.

But it's not always possible, and sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and pull the plug on something that you know in your heart wont work even if it means you're never going to be able to revisit that path.

With any luck, having done so, I can get more than 2-3 hours sleep tonight and stop waking up with stress headaches.

Le sigh. Sometimes, it's inevitable, and I need to listen to what my intuition tells me and not my wishful thinking.

I'll go home, have a few drinkies, write a bunch of depressing poetry and feel better in a few days.

    End complaint.

The only thing about instances is they are all exact duplicates. I still think you should look into Lorenzo LoRez...there is a zombie. You can pose them differently. Much better, unless you want to make a Thriller scene, with them doing a choreographed dance. And even then, if you need a lot you can instance several of them to fill in larger armies and get the variety of poses.

I intend to sit down and re-texture the entire freaking ting with DS shaders. (evil grin) I'm crap at modeling but I think I can get it looking like I want with a few days worth of effort. It's also good motivation to learn the Shader Mixer! (smile)

I have a ton of DS shaders and I'm not afraid to use them! (aaaah face)

I'll have to play - I know what I need to do, just not the best way to go about it. If I can re-scale, the instances will be great for forests and such, and skeleton armies marching in order with a few "hero" individual instances there.

I'm just kinda stuck with the damn thing's material zones.

Tail and head TOTALLY need two additional zones (tail: tail + stinger, head: head + extra spikes), for increased awesomeness. :(

And then there's my struggle with the horn material, since I want it to be suitably scuffed and bony but I can't seem to nail it. Claws and teeth, those I got all right.

Instances can be scaled and moved/rotated as needed. They share geometry and textures though so any morph to the original is transferred to all of them.

I'm still not sure how to use geometry instances though I can tell you it's not for characters. Tried to create a geometry instance of Genesis and he was missing pieces - like the skin around his mouth.

Ahh, thanks for the info! This will be useful when I need forests, villages, and a plague of minor items. Should be fun to experiment with! (smile)

    Ok that's a bit unexpected.

Playing with instances. I created a new scene, dropped Andrei for Freak 5 in it, added some boxers to protect his modesty and did a Create->New Instances to add 4 clones. They appeared in the scene but minus the boxers and there is no way to add boxers to them.

So apparently you can't create an instance that includes all of the clothing. That seems kind of limiting to me.

Still a great tool for trees and such.

I've rendered a scene with multiple Genesis on scene (7), and it went without much of a hassle, even with a fairly heavy world scene as a part of setup. (See the Werewolves of Genesis at my DA account.)

You can always dial down the figure detail (from high resolution to base 1 or 2) and tuck 'em to the background.

I wonder how these "instances" differ from Draagonstorm's product, Here Come the Clones, or whatever it's called. I bought the light version of that I think.

Yeah, that seems like a much better option for background characters. Instances look like a great option for things like high poly trees and props.
