There are also Geometry Shells, which are like instances except they can have their own material settings.

"Playing with instances. I created a new scene, dropped Andrei for Freak 5 in it, added some boxers to protect his modesty and did a Create->New Instances to add 4 clones. They appeared in the scene but minus the boxers and there is no way to add boxers to them."

IIRC in Carrara 6 you could drop something in a group into the replicator and it'd scatter it along with any props/clothing attached. Only problem is you lost all control over the clones/instances once you did.

Cinema 4D has instancing too, but depending on how you're instancing them (With a plugin like SurfaceSPREAD, Carbon Scatter, Vray Proxies. or MoGraph) you are limited to only resizing and positioning them. The nice thing here is that they take up a fraction or less of the memory actually duplicating them multiple times would use up.

With C4D it's pretty much the same deal as with Carrara - put the clothing, jewelry, hair props, parrot-on-the-shoulder, etc into a Null object to group it, put that null into whatever's gonna scatter it (Or add a Render Instance object into the scene then drag that null into the reference link and it will clone it) and it will do so with all the props and stuff under the null. Deformers and morphs too. Best part is you can clone multiple obkects in a single instance, like two wyverns curled up around a clutch of eggs. Drop that into an instance and now you'd have four wyverns and two clutches of eggs :O

Mmm... Carbon Scatter doesn't play nicely with Native Objects and external render engines. I have to convert everything into C4D instances before it will recognize Indigo's materials *derp*

Ooooh those claws on that wyvern! So shiny! Those draggies keep very good care of their claws and teeth it seems D:
My dragons would be jealous ^^

Hey Ps1, are you finding youtube videos aren't loading, or are loading badly, much much worse just in the past few days? ... switching resolution seems to result in the little "cog" spinning around a little, then doing nothing... and sometimes the ads that are supposed to start don't... and you stare at a black screen for 20s, then the real vid starts... and stutters... and stops?

...that's usual for me. Have you checked your connection?

I got the OBJ versions, which should import OK.. I'll tell you shortly after I get home if nobody else chimes in.

One hour 30 minutes and I can leave! Today has been INSANE.. they found a bug in firmware they've been shipping for 2 years... just now.. yikes! Took me 2 hours to find and fix, but it means a complete regression retest of firmware for 10 DIFFERENT VERSIONS of the hardware!!!!! (omg omg omg face)

Definitely beer for dinner.. talk about stress! I KNEW I should have flipped burgers for a living!!! (ahhhh face)

    Ummm...DS 4.6 does have instancing doesn't it? Create->New Node Instance/New Node Instances

Also Create->New Geometry Shell. That one allows you to use different textures I believe but I haven't played with it.

This was done really quick to double check myself. 1 Elephant with 10 instances. All instances can be moved/scaled sepereately

...bugger, I could have set up all that Indian Grass as well as those prop blurs for the planes in the pic I'm working on in less than half the time.

(ahhh face) I can't count the number of things I've had to just forget in order to make room to learn new things.. so now I just crank along and learn new skills as needed, and drop old ones as they become obsolete.

I might try just poking around once I get some baseline skills in. Urgh.. it'll be a while. I do need a forest, a jungle, and a plain with flowers and plants as well as city scenes. I'm gong to need a swamp, too.. I think I have a swamp.. urgh.

I manually rebuilt the CMS database this weekend and now DS 4.6 find about, erm, 2/3 of my content (blank face). Better but no cigar.

i've heard of Xfrog plants before. I think I saw an advertisment (banner ad) or promotion on a third party website.

...a selection of their "billboard" (2D) plants are available here in the Daz store. The free ones offered on their site are 3D Models.

No, at the bottom of the page there are some 2D ones for free, too. I didn't bother with them, though. I just don't like them. I found that the DAZ environment, or the other thingie, has them and I just found them to be fake looking. Maybe I'm biased.

The 2D ones are great for buying in the distance, especially if you have depth-of-field on.. they look "good enough" after DOF blur.

    Otherwise, I agree.. ick!

Catfish basket for lunch! (wheeeeeee face) 2 huge fillets, 3 spicy hush puppies, fries, and tartar sauce!

But now I want to sleep.... snzzzz.... coffee soon, I think.

I want to go home and render, argh! Time to buy a lotto ticket.

...Catfish been as rare here as water in the Sahara. Not sure why. All I can find are large packs of frozen fillets. Need fresh for proper Cajun cookin'

Next Lotto draw for us is tomorrow, and a trifecta: Megabucks, Powerball, and Mega Millions. I just get the Megabucks, smaller player pool, 2 lines for 1$ instead of 1 for 2$. and you can remain anonymous. Yeah it doesn't get to obscene levels like the other two but at my age, even the base 1$ million jackpot (less taxes) will pretty much set me up for the rest of my life. Last Night's draw was 16$ million. Have to go check my ticket.

A million would do me, too. No state tax so only pay Federal, shove $300K into CDs with 30, 60, and 90 day rollovers to keep liquidity, I can get a decent place for cash for about $150K here, then live off the rest and the interest. I can't drive so no exotic cars, big ships make me seasick so no yachts, probably get an electric bike ($2500, no license or insurance needed in Texas), a kick butt computre ($2100) and call it a day. (cool smile)

You can tell I've thought about this... (red face)

Odd about the catfish - I guess since we have lots of wild catfish in the area, it's not such a big deal. Anything OTHER than catfish or fish form the Gulf is in frozen bags, though!

W00t, 10 minutes and I can pack up and go home!

It's been a long long day, tomorrow doesn't look to be any better so I'm going straight home, nibble dinner, and dive right into bed.

I'll save up my party energy for Friday night - I'm seriously considering going out, there are a few places close that have good food, live music, and are an affordable cab ride home. (cool smile)

Yeah, now that you mention it, it's "gone all KK on me" ;-). Note that it's not _all_ videos that this appears to happen, only some of the less popular ones (iirc). Will check things out tonight.
