Well after that disappointing loss to a bottom feeder team a few week ago, followed by a drubbing at the hands of Ohio State. things looked glum for my Wisconsin Badgers as they were one game behind division leader Minnesota coming into today's game in Minnesota. It was basically a "go big or go home" game, and my Badgers definitely went "big" to win 38 - 17 in the oldest rivalry in all of college football dating back to 1889. Though both teams are effectively tied for the division lead, Wisconsin gets the tiebreaker with the head to head win and advances to the Big Ten Championship where they will hope to seek revenge against Ohio State.
Even if they don't defeat the Buckeyes, they likely still have punched their ticket for a Rose Bowl appearance which is fine by me. If they pull off the upset against the #1 team in the nation, the playoff committee will be thrown into a state of confusion and panic as no 2 loss team has ever made the playoff/championship series.
Badgers, Badgers, Badgers, Badgers, Badgers, Badgers, Badgers, Badgers, Badgers, Badgers, Badgers, Badgers
Rose Bowl! Rose Bowl!
Oh, and Auburn won a see-saw slugfest 48 - 45 (93 total points) over Alabama (which will likely drop out of playoff contention for the first time it what seems forever), stopping the Crimson Tide on a late game drive after Bama's kicker missed an easy field goal.

...Tired Of Long Running Swirlies On The Forums Complain't Thread
Complaint: The first storm in the current train has reached here (Western, NY) Just cold rain so far. I've got plenty of necessary stuff stocked up. And I've got supplies for making cookies. Yay! That's today's task.
Russian poem about winter: (Note: In addition to rhyming correctly, it sounds much colder and more menacing in Russian.) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vsMlzhW7ZYU Sorry, couldn't find a deep male Russian reading of it with proper intensity of emotion and menace. And my pronunciation probably isn't ready for prime time yet. But I do make parts of it sound like the hounds of hell are at the door.
"Zimmny Vicher" (tr: "Winter Evening") -- by Alexander Pushkin (1st of 4 stanzas)
The storm covers skies in darkness,
Spinning snowy whirlwinds tight,
Now it wails like a beast wildest,
Now it cries like a weak child,
Now suddenly it rustles
The old roof's dry thatching mass,
Now, a traveller, late and gusty,
It knocks at our window's glass.
--- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- --- ---
Winter Evening (a more literal translation)
Tempest covers sky in haze[s],
Twisting whirls [in driven] snow,
Like a beast begins to howl,
Like a child it wails [anew].
On the worn-out roof it clamours
Suddenly upon the thatch,
Then, as though a traveller tardy
Starts to knock upon our hatch. (lit, window)
I assembled the image and text below and framed it to hang on my wall where I stop and practice reciting it everytime I go out the door. I don't think I could forget it 'till 10 minutes after I'm dead.
Talking about Narwhal tusks and terrorists attacked by Unicorns in another thread. Made me think about how many places in the world could you lay your hands on, and actually remove & use a Narwhal tusk in an emergency? It's like having a hanging 16 ton weight handy in a Karate fight.
Speaking of Karate fights, I just watched the 3rd "John Wick" film. The first two were crazy violent and escalated the violence from scene to scene and movie to movie. The third was, I believe, over-the-top! Where could a 4th possibly go? Well, I guess if one is used to modern computer "games" where one kills everything in sight, these movies are right up one's alley. And I expect it won't be long before we see a Narwhal tusk pop up in one of these games soon.
When are we are we going to learn how to defend against a pointed stick? Or a narwhal tusk?

Non-complaint: Cookies! Ay, Admiral. Thar be cookies here. Mmm... hot out of the oven chocolate chip, pecan, oatmeal cookies. 3 & 1/2 dozen of them. My mother's recipe still works. But I nearly broke my wrist trying to mix everything. And uncle Arthur didn't help. I used to be better at this.
Complaint: The price of real vanilla extract in this modern age. Oy, I'm in the wrong business. But since I need it only once every 10 years, the tiny little bottle will be enough.
Long running swirlies can usually be blamed on bad plumbing. But at least the water should be cleaner!
This is actually nothing we should be joking about. The tusk was used to defend against a bad guy with a knife. Hopefully the tusk-wielder won't be prosecuted. I'll be watching this for sure.
Honestly, I'm far more scared of a knife attacker than I am of somebody with a gun.
I'm cooking my turkey right now. It's smelling up the house so GOOD and it has over an hour yet to go and then maybe 15 minutes under the broiler to finish it off. Whoohoo!
So I have some ideas about a title for the new thread. If I get it, that is...
The situation that necessitated the strange weapon is nothing to joke about. But the irony and image of use of such a strange weapon has to be worth a few words.
black ftiday coupie still working.
the qrterly pc memb is 8 bux in cart
doin 1 last browse of the 2.99s stuffs
...I know the feeling.
Sadly I don't have enough counter space where i live to roll out dough on where I currently live and also donated my old Sunbeam Mixmaster (which also had a pastry hook) as well as my pasta maker as I have no room to put either of them anywhere (cupboard shelves not tall enough for the mixer, and the top of the fridge is taken up with other items). Yeah, I miss home baked cookies, particularly at this time of the year as well as handmade pasta which cooks up much quicker.
A new electric can opener is on this month's budget as well as my old one quit working. Opening a can with a manual can opener is extremely painful so I've taken to buying as many canned items as possible in those with pull ring tops.

I am hungry again and I do not have any snacks complaint.
Turkey is completely done and the bones have been stripped. Ready for bone broth!
Have you considered moving with her? Except for an occasional hurricane, the weather is lots better down here.
The knife wielder wwas shot dead by an armed policemen, so he won't be complaining.
in hindsight, yes I suppose it is quite amusing, the building where it all started is called Fishmongers Hall, and it is the HQ of the Worshipful Company of Fishmongers, which is one of the historic livery companies of the City of London. The narwale tusks are obviously maritime souvenirs and were used as decoration. They are quite large objects.
Still no snow. Cold rain but no snow. Weather people still just guessing, but now using massive computers to get it wrong. We were promised 2 inches of snow by noon tomorrow. But still 17 hours to redeem itself.
would have to wait for retirement, a few more years. afraid to leave my job.
i'd have to do job interviews with my walker, dunno how a walker dependency would go over with interviewers.
if i manage my 401k smartly, might be able to buy a lil house there.
i'm very nervours bout leaving my retirement in mutual funds. enron. >.<
at some point should prolly roll a chunk into a solid ira savings account,
my job gives a lil money towards my retirement, not quite a pension, but it's in their stocks. on paper, makes me nervous.
feeling motion sick from scrolling store pages. was looking for like a Kevin Sorbo lookin character
found a couple of Jon Snows
...we had a fairly heavy shower of the white stuff while I was walking home last night however the ground is still too warm for it to stick.
When it comes down to it, snow itself doesn't bother me as much as I can still get traction in it with little trouble )( and yes it does look nice for a little bit). It is what happens in the days afterwards that makes it a bother.
Since a "heavy" (6" or more) snowfall is so rare, here the city doesn't plough most surface streets as they don't have enough equipment, and road salt is a big "no-no". Residents, even businesses also rarely clear their walkways. So, what occurs is all that light fluffy snow gets packed down by a couple days of vehicular and foot traffic, slightly melts during the day, then freezes overnight forming a thick layer of almost rock hard ice which is fairly treacherous to walk or drive on and difficult to remove. Also as the temperatures start warming up aloft, we usually get a day of freezing rain that glazes everything over (which makes getting around even more dangerous) as well as can cause power outages from sagging wires and tree limbs that give way under the weight.
About three years ago, between 12" - 14" of snow was dumped on the Portland by one January storm which paralyzed the city for about a week. it is usually about every 3 - 4 years when we to get a "serious" snow event here.year..
At least back in the upper midwest, after a snowfall it usually clears off and stays cold, cities & towns are more well equipped to handle a snow event, and many cities/towns have laws requiring walkways to be cleared within a set number of hours after a snowfall.
cranberry sauce!!
wonder how many people forgot the cranberry sauce
I thought I had something funny to write, but I seem to have forgotten as I was interrupted several times.
I think it had something to do with the snow/sleet/rain earlier, but all I remember now is the bunches of accidents that seemed to be everywhere... so it probably wasn't that... it could of been about my trip to the Smithhaven mall... maybe... malls usually produce a variety of funny stories... most aren't funny at the time. All I remember is observing that the food court had a Crêpe booth... there were like six guys working there and nobody wanted Crêpes... it must be a money laundering front, because who gets Crêpes at a mall? That and the six guys looked really nervous when someone actually looked like they wanted to buy one, and looked really relieved when they didn't... my guess is some big burly guy with a suitcase comes around every few weeks and buys ten thousand invisible strawberry crepes to go.
A people with dogs now required to take their dogs to malls and stores? There were so many dogs at the mall... also 90% of the dogs very obviously didn't want to be there... Dogs might love trucks, but they seem to hate stores... I get that because I hate being in stores too. I don't think most dog owners get dog body language either... if your dog is shivering and bug eyed, it's not because his cute little sweater isn't warm enough, it's because the crowds are giving him a stress related nervous breakdown. Yes, mister Puggington is adorable, but he's vibrating so badly he looks like he is about to fall to pieces.
And no, none of those dogs were service dogs or legitimate emotional support pets... if your emotional support dog needs an emotional support pet of their own, you really need to rethink your choice of emotional support pet.
I actually feel bad for the dogs, because mostly it's just stupid owners who think it's fashionable to take their dog everywhere with them, even places that are dangerous or stressful to the dogs... Safety-wise, Home Depot (or any DIY center) is definitely one of those places that's not a great place for pets, but people insist on bringing dogs, every time I'm there, there are at least two dogs somewhere in the store.
None of that was what I was going to write about, but that's were it ended up...
Oh well... good night folks.
