...hmm, I prefer...
Tough choice. It would be easier with more money. But it makes a good complaint!
There you go, three upgrade options. If you're like 90% of everybody else in the world, then the last one is probably the one you should do. You're welcome!
Being unemployed means it's going to take me a while to find the extra cash to afford either of the two, but the 9800X has been under $400 ($362 from 3rd party sellers) on amazon lately so maybe in the next few months I can go that route if they're still selling them. And with all the trouble the 30XX launch has had for NVIDIA, I'd want to wait a while for those cards even if I could afford one now.
Yay for being broke!
...smoky is skies here again. This time it's from the new firestorm that is raging in Northern California. I first noticed it to the south early yesterday afternoon and by evening it pretty much had moved up the coast and eventually inland. Woke up this morning to a red sunrise and looking towards the horizon, the sky has a brown tint again. Local air quality is still listed as "good" as the smoke is at a high altitude fo now rather then at ground level. The fires causing it are primarily in the wine growing region of the state and are 0% contained. According to the news last night, three separate large blazes merged together yesterday.
Complaint: I found some more old personal memories video tapes that I want to convert to DVD. I have a converter device that I bought several years ago and used it a few times. It takes analog video from the VCR and converts it to USB signals for a computer. Recently, however, I dug it out again and tried to use it with my new Win10 machines. The software installed, and ran OK, but the video from the converter hardware box was scrambled, noisy and the sound garbled. Totally useless! (*sigh*) Another victim of age and progress. I hung onto it though and stuffed it away in a box of old software.
Non-complaint: Wheee... I'm glad I saved a Win7 drive from my old "George" machine. The CPU fan that I'd ordered for my recently revived and upgraded old HP machine "George" arrived a couple days ago. Today I put George on the surgery table and replaced his fan with one that doesn't grind to a stop with a squeal when power is removed. But while I had him opened, I dug into my data archive box and found the Windows7 hard drive that had been removed from George before he was upgraded to Win10. I replaced the Win10 drive with the Win7 drive and powered him up. Yup, it was Win7 again. I rummaged around in my old software box and found the VHS converter device & software. Installed it and Wheee... it worked. So, for the last few hours I've been converting VHS tapes to DVD. Not great image quality compared to modern TV, but at least the memories are still recognizable.
Speaking of poor image quality. Does anybody remember the old 8mm home movie film? Have you actually watched any old 8mm home movies lately? Gad, how could we think that was worth the money that it cost back then (the '50s)? How did we ever survive until HD TV came of age? We're so spoiled.
Another non-complaint: I started thinking about this old VCR machine I used today. It's an old, high-end Sony, at least 26 years old, and just keeps on ticking. Although I did have to buy a new remote control for it a few years ago. Not because it broke, but because I lost the original. (Absolutely had to have the official remote control for it, because there's squat-all for buttons on the front of the machine, and all the fancy features are managed by the remote control)

I pulled out the old Bell & Howell Super8 projector to show the kids some of the ancient "home movies" for the late 60s-70s. Taught them how to thread the film through the sprockets too. I'm happy I bought a few extra projector bulbs back in the 80s. Tough to find them these days. Nothing wrong with a little memory lane nostalgia. I actually thought $15 bucks per cartridge for 3 minutes of film a pretty good deal with processing and shipping included. Sure compared to video Kodak was making a sweet bundle. But the footage, really liked the feel of the grainy 400.
Non-complaint, radar gun enforcers were monitoring the school zones here, had way too many speeders recently, wonder if someone called
Complaint, bought the perpetual license of Substance Painter before they went subscription. Got an update message for a new version and before I thought about it, I have the new version which I cannot use replacing the version that I can use. Aaaargh. Online computer chat person said someone would call me. No call. Aaaargh.

feelin october chill in the air
..wish it was more "October like" today here. Instead calm with a forecast high in the low 80s and more smoke filled skies. Air quality has deteriorated to moderate, bordering on unhealthful in a number of areas as the smoke seems to have lowered over the area. Guess this will be the new autumn norm here.
Non-complaint: Wheee... I got out of the house today and bummed a ride uptown for laundry. She always gives me a hassle when I try to give her money for gas, so I took her to lunch at Applebee's today. A treat for her, a treat for me. Late lunch hour, few people in the restaurant and spaced out properly. Meal was wonderful. I had salmon, mashed potatoes, steamed broccoli smotherered in butter, and I also indulged in a vodka tonic since I wasn't driving.
In addition to laundry, we stopped at a household sale full of masked browsers. I picked up two large glass display domes with wooden bases. Saved lots of $$ over buying them new and having them shipped. Also, had her stop at the big liquor store in the city where prices are a lot more reasonable than the little liquor store next to the laundromat. I picked up couple bottles of Korbel Brut champagne for Thanksgiving and Christmas gatherings. But for my upcoming birthday, for me, a bottle of Moët & Chanandon Imperial. Good stuff. A once a year treat to enjoy in my dotage.
...nice. Vodka tonic, always good. Hmmm, Moët & Chanandon Imperial, not an inexpensive choice. Cheers.
...made such a sojourn myself yesterday to another branch of the market I shop at which is across the river. Turned out I can get a nice fairly direct and quick tram-bus connection there and back (almost "door to door") which, even though the distance is greater, each way takes about maybe a couple minutes more than the walk to the market I usually shop at. One of the reasons I tried this was that I found out they had my favourite variety of ice creme (Espresso Madness), which for some odd reason, the other one doesn't carry (even though is the same company). Another plus, this is one of their much larger markets which means a larger selection of products.
I actually used to shop at this one when I lived in my old neighbourhood.
This may become my "go to" routine during the rainy season as even for the market closer by I usually take transit when the weather is bad (though to that one, the trip is oddly more convoluted as it involves out of the way travel). As I usually run my errands during the early afternoon, there is no issue with crowds (particularly now as capacity limits have been imposed due to social distancing).
The other nice part, I easily did this trip on a 1.25$ two and a half hour fare, which is a small price to not have to lug a heavy sack and shoulder bag of groceries home for nearly a mile while having to deal with impatient or mouth breathing motorists and blind crosswalks at intersections due to a big SUV, van, or jacked up pickup usually parked right at the corner.
i need a sojourn to pick up malibu and a bottl o' bailey's
need a foray to the big washing machines, do my winter blankets
cooking tortellini in bell pepper soup. warm up the insides.
Complaint: Oedipus
about 6 weeks ago I pulled my left Achilles tendon. Had an appointment with my doctor scheduled anyway, so after he told me my #1 priority was to see an endocrinologist (my HgA1C is way up), I asked him to look at it. He noticed my left calf was very swollen and changed my #1 priority to getting an ultrasound to make sure it wasn't blood clot. Insisted I schedule the appointment before I left his office, which I did. Ultrasound was normal, so yay no death. So he told me to elevate it and use warm compresses. Now my foot is swollen too, especially my heel, so I walk like I'm wearing high heels and can't fit into my left shoe. Borrowing my son's left shoe (not like he's going anywhere, he noted). 12 more days before my appointment with a vascular specialist.
...more than worthy complaint.
Moët & Chanandon? I hear it keeps well in a pretty cabinet.
Served with cake.

...complaint of my own.
Living on the fringe between a fiarly affluent and sketchy area of town has it's issues. Tonight as I approached my building, I noticed a rather "questionable" looking individual hanging out by the front door just off to the side. After two residents used their sensor keys to unlock the door and enter, he waited until the door almost closed before rushing up and slipping in. Usually, when I see such people hanging out near the door, I hold back and wait rather than go up to enter as I don't want to let them "ghost" in behind me. Most of the time if no one enters, they usually give up and leave.
Will have to speak to management about this tomorrow.
And the added advantage is that after the wonderful contents have been consumed, the glorius box the bottle came in can still stand on your shelf in a prominent, well-lit, spot and impress with gleams of light and color.
Complaint?: Today I got an email from ASUS reminding me that it was one year ago that I bought my new ASUS motherboard to begin upgrading my old HP computer to become my DAZing machine (finally finished only a few weeks ago with the move into the new proper sized & cooled case). They really didn't have congratulations on their mind, they just wanted to tempt me into getting addicted to their cloud storage service, again, so they offered it free for a while, again. I ignored it, again.
My complaint is not that they offered me the service, but that they reminded me that it's been one year and it seems like just last month. Time goes so much faster when you're old. Except when suffering the slings & arrows of outrageous fortune.
