Eureka went bonkers. the last season was unwatchable.
the revival of Dark Shadows became painful at the end.
I have ancestry in Finland!
Yep, it sure was. Don't forget, Yosemite also erupted, the oceans evaporated (right after the Himalya thing, of course), there was mad cow something or other, and we failed on the promise of getting everybody a flying car.
You're overthinking it. This is commonly called "Analysis Paralysis". You invent the perfect setup in your mind, and then don't implement it. We are all afflicted by this.
I say buy two big @ss hard drives, put your stuff on one of them, then set up your backups to run AUTOMATICALLY, saving your stuff to the other new hard drive. Stop messing around with lots of tiny little hard drives, you don't have time for that. No, really!
I've seen plenty of shows take a quality dive in season 2, or more commonly, season 3. But I don't recall ever seeing a show lose its d*** mind in the middle of season 1. But I stuck through it and finished the season. The last episode was marginally better, though there were some massively stupid actions taken by various peoples. I read an explanation of the last episode somewhere which had blurbs from an interview with the director, and that helped a lot. So I will give season 2 a chance when it comes out. But I've stopped recommending the show and started ranting to my husband about how the blank turned out to be a blank and of course it blanked when they tried to blank. Duh!
There hasn't been any real creativity in television (in all of its iterations) for YEARS. I've said it many times, Hollywood (in California and elsewhere) ruins all TV. Before we got 2 Law & Order shows, 3 CSI shows, 18 Surviver shows, a couple dozen shows featuring a super person, super car, super motorcycle, or super plane or super helicopter. Then there were two more lame spinoff Star Trek shows, there were these things called "sequels". And now we have fake "reality" shows and spinoffs of those!
I couldn't even take the fake drama of "Dancing with the Stars" for more than a couple of seasons, and had to cut that one off after not being able to tolerate any longer the show's willingness to portray their stars and instructors as unempathetic, petty, backbiting, jealous, and prone-to-anger humans.
And then there was Bridezillas, Bachelor, Bachelorette, a hundred fake ballroom dance shows (and one fake ice skating show), a half-dozen stupid "Gladiator" type games, and various hookup shows where participants were starting to complain of being sexually assaulted; sometimes even on camera!
I'm done with Hollywood. The people there get famous and then start telling the rest of us that we need to do this or we need to do that, and here's how to eat what you can drive, and basically how to live and raise our own kids.
So it's all TV that has "gone bad". I'm trying to figure out who to blame for all this. I think it's a 3-way tie between "Matlock", "Three's Company", or just about any other sitcom in the 70's.
Sitcom:
It's not a "situational comedy" because that would require that there be a situation at hand. There is sitting, to be sure, because nearly all sitcoms have a couch in them. So that's what I think about when I see or hear the word "sitcom". Yep, to me, it's just a bunch of people sitting on or around a couch saying lame things into a camera and microphone.
I took my idiotbox out back to my shooting range over a decade ago and put like 2000 rounds into it. The cellphone went in a blaze of glory too :P
...my last television blew up (literally) about 18 years ago. Never bothered to replace it as network shows were pretty much scraping the bottom of the barrel, and I saw little purpose in spending 40$ - 50$ a month to have programmes and films interrupted by adverts every 8 - 10 minutes. Several years later when they switched to over the air digital broadcast, you basically had to throw your old analogue get a new one that was digitally compatible (one aspect of digital broadcast that I really dislike is if the signal is in the slight bit interrupted or weak, instead of a little "snow" the image would freeze up, pixelise, or black out for a few moments). .
Given that most programming on the main networks here today pump out vapid rubbish for the most part, I saw no point in getting another set even when I was offered one for free. Nowadays when I'm in a pub or visiting someone and see the level of programming these days I thing society may be on its last (even the science, historical, and geographical channels that I once found interesting have turned to crap with "tabloid" rather than informative programming).
i cant find a pbr shader for plain old dirt
i so psyched for the carrara pbr plugin
Oh yeah, for sure. I have a 52" screen hooked up to an Amazon TV. I use the Plex app on that to stream my movie collection from my NAS, and I will stream some stuff from Amazon, IMDB TV, and Pluto. Pluto is getting on my nerves, however, and it's all about the lame advertisements that get overplayed and don't have any variety. And on Pluto, most of those ads are about fake reality programming. So-called "best friends" who hate each other, for example. Yeah, they have shows on that!
I'm tired of the one that pushes the people with their dogs doing some challenging racing and stuff. It just BORES me, oh God it so badly bores me. I'd much rather learn the proper way to TRAIN a dog than to watch this fake reality pap.
I may go back to shopping the bins at Walmart, Target, and Best Buy for movies on DVD. At least I can strip out the damned commercials from those.
I never buy 4k movies unless they cost the same or less than 1080p. Seriously, HD is good enough for these Hollywood wonk actors and actresses who don't know what real people have to put up with, and I'm starting to think about going back to paying for movies outside of the streaming services just so I can avoid the horrible ads about shows featuring hilbillies in LA, toe fungus, or marital discord. 4K? I mean seriously, just how important is it that I see Chris Pine's razor burn, badly tattoed limbs, or the moles on some actress's chest?
LOL, I make myself laugh sometimes. But yes, my pain is real.
I was at Easter dinner last week and one of the relatives overheard me say I don't have an antenna or cable TV and get all my video from the Internet. They then piped up that "yeah, but you can't get the local stations." As if that were a negative. I didn't say anything because they all own and shoot guns regularly and I am tolerated at best at family dinners anyway. But my mind was formulating all sorts of comebacks. Yeah, I don't get Dancing With The Stars and whatever the latest pablum is being fed the network TV sheep but I do get to fill my afternoons watching over 500 episodes of some guy clean sewers! Now, that's what I call educational TV.
Dirty jobs?!
YouTube: "Drain Addict"
Man... Youtube is weird.
...one of the streams i just to put on in the background is one from Tokyo near a major rail station. I find the sound of the trains passing by (all electrically powered) is rather relaxing in an odd way.
I also set up playlists of music as well.
Are you sure it wasn't the penguin on top of your television that exploded? Burma! Sorry, I panicked.
My brother put in DishTV when he moved in some years ago. He pays for it, but without cable TV I would never have discovered the joys of Spongebob Squarepants or what the rest of the world calls football. I do enjoy both BTW.
...actually the wooden penguin I had on top of the television survived (yes I actually have one, found it when i was doing temp work cleaning out an old department store warehouse, they were just going to toss it). It fell off and broke a foot but that was easily mendable. It is now on one of my bookshelves
copying files to ssd drive is averaging about 23mb/s, is that good?
I've been getting up to 50-60MB/s on W7, but it depends on the average size of the files and how many files there are.
if you take 1TB worth of files, it goes faster if the average size is large, moving a million 1MB files takes ages, and lowers the transfer speed.
Non-Complaint: So much good stuff came out this week but Mermay is next month so I have to prepare. My wishlists keep getting filled with more stuff. I even add notes to remind myself texture expansions exist. Since Mermay is soon the mermaid wishlist is my top priority this month tho the new shaders and fairy poses are too good to pass and I wait on sales. I have Hightop Chucks and flat boots from other sets so if something comes with heels I can pair it with them instead
The list isn't in any order except for maybe a combination of percent off plus what I'm missing more of or keep thinking "If only I had a night HDRI/Vest/boots without heels/whatever"
Top 10 Priority:
Mermaid:
Guys:
Fight Scene Stuff:
Cool Girl:
Romance Items:
Tutorials:
There's much more but to keep the list short I limited each to 10. I'll try to stick to the mermaid theme this month so I'm ready for Mermay. I already have some underwater settings but I'll try keeping everything from being repetitive and will try an upload a day for Mermay
Complaining non-complaint: Wheee-owww... I've now had my 2nd Covid vaccination. Wheee... But already I'm feeling blah, achy, weak & slooow. But while out on this mini-adventure I had lunch at my favorite Texas Hot diner, two hots with everything, and a big chocolate milkshake. Stopped in at the bank and cashed a check and withdrew some ecomomy stimulating cash. I also made it to the liquor store and rewarded myself with a liter of Disaronno. Pricey but it's got to be better than the bargain basement amaretto that I got a couple months ago. Economy now adequately stimulated. The only thing that will get me to dip any further into my stimulus money is a miraculous appearance of an RTX-3060 for sale at a reasonable, near MSR, price.
...excellent.
I just got a vaccine shot too! But this is my first one. I rewarded myself with a tofu sandwich and bubble tea. I'm feeling kind of tired and sore now. Time for a nap.

dunno if a 16k hdri will light better than the 2k version.
all the general rigged clothes needs rigging convert, need whiskey for the tedium.
guess i should list the stuff in a spreadsheet to keep track of whats done.
a few of the downloads failed. eek. i have to go back to find which ones and restart te download. errrrg
not every outfit has who its for in the title. have to go to the store link to check. file prefixes woulda een good. like G2F, GN1
that irritating webp. dont even have the thumbnails to see whats what.
carrra has a hdr light dome plugin. guess i'll do the hdri first.
then i'll do the ant farm and 1st bastion sets. replacing all the jpg textures with procedurals where i can. hopefully glass, metals and wood arent all in the same shader domain.
Please note... I wrote this this morning and thought I posted it, but apparently I didn't, I just left my iPad behind to go do something... but instead of just deleting my inconsequential thoughts on a subject that probably only bugs me, long after the moment passed... here they are...
Complaint... I hate to criticize other people's work... But...
There are certain things I see sometimes that just bug me incredibly, mostly because the person who made the product did a good job, but somewhere along the way they did a couple of dealbreakers that just kill the item for me... in that it seems like it started with good intentions but then at some point it was just phoned in the rest of the way.
This morning I was looking at a thread which included brand new images of a very special model, but the first thing I noticed is textures that don't line up.
This is like one of my biggest peeves... if you are going to make a brick wall... (or anything with textures that go around corners), please make sure they align... like the brick courses follow through correctly as they turn the friggin corner... it's maddening to see the bricks around the corner drop half an inch so they don't align on the edge.
I see this way too often with textures like brick, tile, siding or shingles... also, don't scale your textures so there is a sliver of brick at the top of a wall... in real life nobody shaves down bricks to a quarter of an inch, and I'm not talking a situation where there could be an explanation why it looks that way, I'm talking for example it's a short brick wall, and the top row of bricks are cut off at like a quarter of their thickness... if you can't scale the bricks properly, drop the wall height and use a cap stone to finish the top...
The example on the left is a bit exaggerated with the alignment, but the cut off bricks at the top really aren't...
And using textures of very rough or deep surfaces on very simple surfaces... like for example a large diameter river pebble texture on a flat plane... that will almost never look convincing... or deep irregular flagstone with wide mortar on a wall... maybe head on from fifty feet it may be convincing, but good luck on any corners, or close up... in real life on corners you'll see the fact that it sticks out like two inches from the mortar... in a model, even if you manage to align the textures, on the corners, it will always look flat like it was wrapped contact paper.
The other thing... if it's not something you are familiar with, use a friggin' reference image... and a relevant one.
This is specifically about real world items, not sci-fi or fantasy...
I see people make subway cars with wheel sets from an 1800s passenger car, car type tires on a truck, motors or hydraulics that don't attach to the thing they drive, 70s type air filters on modern car engines and loads of stuff like that... I get that 90% of people who purchase these things don't see that, but don't people who make stuff want to get that right?
And it's likewise for impossible stuff... like spindly 2x4 beams spaced hugely apart holding up a massive weight, or stuff like no doors into a friggin' room (not doors that don't open, not doors at all)... I suppose that's acceptable if you are trapped in some sort of Phantom Zone and you've forgotten the rest of the universe has doors in to and out of places... but still.
Bagh... I feel petty or nitpicky saying all that. But sometimes I see a thread and people post an image of a model and I'm like "Aaaaaaagh... how?"
I don't want to comment or say anything derogatory about the thing, but it just bugs me because the problems are sooo obvious.
Okay... I'm done.
That should hold me for another five years.
On that topic.
