...I've worked with RAID on big mainframe machines (30 years ago) but never setup RAID on PCs.  Any advice or words of warning?

Modern storage arrays are very much housetrained, and consumer NASs are even better behaved.  They feed themselves too, don't scratch up the furniture, and don't burn down the house.

So I do have advice:  Synology.  I have one and use it for replication.  You know, that thing that gets done automatically so that whenever I update a file in my "Documents" or "Downloads" folder structures so that when I go to another computer, "Documents" or "Downloads" on THAT COMPUTER also have the file I just now updated on the first computer.

My Synology NAS does all the stuff you're doing with your dodgy Windows networking, only I'm using DSM and several apps that run on a Linux box (because that's what it is).  The bad part for you is that it'll cost money and you'll be done in a weekend's worth of hours or less.  You won't have to feed it, play with it, teach it tricks, paper train it, or make arrangements to get shots for it.

That's good for me because it's not a pet in my house.  It's one of the many robots that does what it does and gets ignored most of the time, with an occasional review done by me to make sure that all the replication is happening correctly.  One day, I'll buy a second Synology NAS and set it up as a centralized backup platform, to keep that function separated from my replication function.

But for you, this is probably way too easy and way too fast because as you've said before, you're looking for activities to keep you busy and engaged.  I get that, so carry on, good sir, carry on.

Just promise me that you will back up the damned thing (if you're storing stuff on it).  Unless you're good with just redefining everything after a hard crash, which is a viable recovery method if you can afford to lose everything on it.  And with a replication machine where everything on it is just a copy of what's on all of your other machines, then that may actually be the case.  It is for me.

Right now, my NAS has two 10 TB drives configured as mirrors.  There are spaces for an additional 2 drives, but right now they're not populated.  Synology's technology allows for unlike-matching of each drive in the NAS, but I still keep them matched because that gives you the best value for the largest drives in your RAID array.  As mentioned above, I plan to one day get a second Synology NAS and keep it purely for centralized backups; kind of like a cloud for backups in my home, and allow my 2 PCs and soon-to-be-later-this-year new Mac to write their backups to the second Synology device, with a separate weekly backup going to a hot-swappable HDD for storage in my safe or offsite.

Lots of plans there that have to be executed on, but yeah, backups are important to me.  I don't want to have to excoriate myself for not having backups after a drive crash; that would just be embarrassing!  And yes, everything gets backed up today, and depending on the partition, some of it multiple times in one day.  cheeky

    ..so, are you on Lnux?

No, I'm not.  Unless you count my NAS, TV, washer, dryer, Kindle, and other devices all using Linux, which I don't.  The NAS is probably the closest thing to a Linux environment, but I don't use it to do any day to day stuff.  Pretty much anything important that I do is done under Windows 10, but I do use iPad, iPhone, and Apple Watch, and I'm thinking of buying a new MacBook Pro when the 16" models come out with the new Apple silicone.

Happy Memorial Day, guys and gals. I hope all your parades, barbecuing, downloading, and googling go well.

I can't decide what I want to do today. Mostly, I want to read, but I also have classwork, renders, and laundry I need to catch up on. I guess I can do all of the above, but it's going to cut into my reading time. sad

I'm pretty sure that moths don't eat clothing.  They have neither the mouth parts nor the digestive ability (they have only a proboscis (that means "straw")).  Moth caterpillars, however, do have mandibles and a gut that doesn't require liquids only.

    To Certaintree:

Yes, that McGyver dude is right.  We all care here.  And one day, if you see a guy in a gorilla costume with an axe being chased by a guy in a Batman costume, that might be me in the Batman costume.  Batman has been on the prowl for that guy in the gorilla costume and he's getting very very close to capturing his man!

...I can attest that they do as in my former residence there were serious moth issues and I not only had a couple of Harris Tweeds ruined but a lovely Irish cable knit sweater totally eaten. They never went after the rayon sweaters or Hawai'ian shirts. .

I said that moth caterpillars (aka, larvae) do the eating.  When you find moths, whether they fly out of the grass as you walk over it, or fly out of your favorite clothing, or you find 'em dead in that old box of cereal in your cupboard, the damage has ALREADY been done.  And it was done by the caterpillars, not the moths.

Like butterfly larvae, moth larvae MUST acquire and store enough calories to go through the metamorphosis, or else said metamorphosis doesn't even begin.  Yep, their bodies know when they have stored up enough caloric energy and there's a little DNA or hormone "switch" that flips once they've eaten enough.  The caterpillar has no control over this.  He can't will the switch to not flip and he cannot flip the switch before he has eaten enough.  All he knows is that he must eat or die.  Can't eat like that if your mouth has been converted to a straw.

Butterflies are a major hobby for me, and moths are like nighttime versions of butterflies.  The metamorphosis is truly that:  A metamorphosis.  Interesting factoid:  Contrary to popular belief, the caterpillar does not spin a cocoon around himself.  Depending on species, he might make a single thread of silk to cradle himself to his host plant, or he might not do that.  But then his caterpillar body, like all others before and after him, BECOMES the cocoon.  Again, he has no control over this, and it begins the very MOMENT he has stored up enough calories.  He can't hang out 'till morning, he can't say "so long" to his caterpillar friends, and he can't even stop for coffee.  He needs to move immediately to his hanging spot on a branch.

The metamorphosis itself can take longer or shorter depending on ambient temperatures, and most cocoons can tolerate even very cold weather for very long periods of time.  Otherwise, we'd never see butterflies and moths in the springtime after a long, harsh, and wet winter.

Well, a nice long weekend is just about over.  Back to work in the morning.  I work from home now, but I'm thinking of asking if I can go into the office once or twice a week, especially now that Florida doesn't need to mask up if we've been vaccinated.   I need human contact, at least once in awhile!

I haven't masked up in over 2 weeks now, even though I carry it with me whenever I go out.  The only time I wear it is at the grocery store, but now I'm starting to see people more and more not having their mask on at all, or only half-wearing it.  Store employees are the worst, and the funniest.  Hah, it's usually not covering their nose or it's only on their chin...or just hanging from one ear.  Isn't that kind of like not putting on your undergarments all the way?

If I didn't put my boxers on all the way, or only on one leg, I'd be hobbling everywhere as I tried to go through my day.  I say do it right or just go commando.

I'm talking about the masks, people!  cheeky

Human contact is overrated... besides humans smell funny and close up it's even worse... after wearing a mask for a while those baloney farts are going to be so much worse than before... and sure, seeing coworkers seems like fun now, but don't you remember those are the same people you used to be glad to not see on the weekend?
Maybe you like them... that's entirely possible, but I'm just cautioning you so you aren't disappointed that they haven't changed or still smell odd.

Also... Public Service Announcement... don't forget to trim your nose hairs... I think that was one of the things people have forgotten about... If you don't do it for yourself, please think of the children... do it for the children.

...however moths are usually the sign that larvae may also be present. How they got into the closed and latched steamer trunkwhere I stored my heavy clothing during the summer to lay eggs is still a mystery as it sealed pretty tight.

Complaint: I spent too much time soon scrolling today. Also, Graphic art cameras don't work with recent editions of Daz. Hoping to get a copy of the fix from the creator, but we'll see how that goes.

...Non Complaint.  Finally someone released a sky system that works with the Iray Sun/Sky which adds detail like clouds instead of just leaving you with a clear sky.

Crikey I spent so much on sky and cloud products yet the only ones that work with the Iray sun are Stonemason's Iray Clouds, and the Ireal Animated Clouds.  Everything else (including the Cloudscape Creator Bundle, which I had the impression was just cloud layers) all include full HDRI environments . My issue with most sky HDRIs is that "sun" (which is usually a photometric distant light) is often not as physically accurate as the Iray Sun/sky setting.  I have found some where the sun is less "luminous" (even using the exact same tone mapping settings I do with the Iray Sun), colour temperature isn't the same (most often on the "cool" side), and often shadows do not diffuse properly with object distance, as well as are too dark.

@kyoto kid  It looks nice. Let me know what you think if you get it.

....I just tried it out and it works beautifully. Finally, clouds in the sky with the Iray Sun that is more physically accurate,  The skydome can also be rotated.

....yeah if this were the old forums that would be easier to search for as it had several different filters including posts made by <user name>.  The forum search here is so useless.

Oh, check the post just above yours concerning your question about Iray Sky Pro (have to cobble together "multi quotes" now, another pain as a new post could appear before you finished).

@kyoto kid looks good! I have it wishlisted for now. Might be a bit before I can pick it up. Between the memorial day sale and getting shape splitter just now ($20 after you factor in buying the pc+ new release for the coupon and tax), I think I should probably take a break and go to Daz rehab or something.

..yeah with this and the Stonemaon Iray Couds I can put together some nice sky settings.

At least the IBL skies bundle also works with 3DL using AweShader IBL Master and the AoA Advanced Distant Light  (the latter which gives a more accurate sun effect) so it will still get used. Skin Builder3 also works with 3DL and has proper SSS.

Zoiks 01:15 here,  time to turn in.

I hope it's not kidney stones... I get those and they really suck. It alternates between feeling like being stabbed in the kidney or having a gorilla crushing your kidney in their fist for several days...

In general drinking lots of water helps if it's kidney stones, but since that's not perfect advice for other conditions that are not kidney stones, I don't really know what to say other then "good luck".

McGyver I had a recent run in with kidney stones, weird cause never had them in my life. According to my Dr, yes you need to drink lots of water and he also said to increase calcium, since it usually means you low on it. Increased my calcium intake and not having a problem anymore, so he must be right. I would definitely ask a Dr about it first though.

On a side note...it's my birthday today and yes I'm fishing for birthday wishes. Don't know why, but feeling bleh today, think it's from lack of sun, we've had so much cloud lately and of course rain.
