Hey guys, I stopped getting notifications when the forum switched over and had a heck of a time finding the thread again.

Regarding Gamma, my setting of .96 is with the Gamma Correction turned off, forgot to mention that previously.  I set it this way to complement the increase in Gain to 1.05. It creates a subtle contrast.  If I set the Gamma at 2.2 and Gain at the default 1.0 my renders look very 'foggy' and washed out no matter how much I adjust my lights.

Roger, your G2M renders are quite nice, I'm glad Gamma 2.2 seems to work for your light set-up.

Artini, your render using my settings does look too dark...you may need to brighten the lighting a bit more or increase the Gain by slight increments. It's funny how we're all using the same program and features yet the results vary so widely.

Roger, as requested, here are my light translations.  The first capture is the main light, second is the rim light.  The fill light is directly beneath the figure, not angled and with shadows turned off.

Interesting, what is the gamma set to on your monitor? I have that set to 2.2 so it translates over to DS as well. Gamma really has to be a global setting in order for it all to work.

I worked Khory's magic on Nevio, and this time I even did the teeth. His last expression says it all!

Just finished giving Bjorn and Darius the pearly treatment. A white diffuse on the teeth isn't going to work, but, Khory has included a nice little colour chart to remedy that. I put it into Photoshop so I can use the colour picker to get accurate colours. The teeth look a lot better now. Probably the last time you'll see Darius smile, it'll ruin his bad boy reputation. He'd just get away with it if he had a gold tooth though!

My monitor's Gamma is set to 2.2 for PC use.  Macs use a lower value.  A while back a render expert posted his overall settings for different render qualities but he always left the Gamma untouched at it's default setting of 1.0.  Also, the few pre-made light sets I've bought never mention changing the Gamma settings.

Have you posted your light and render settings somewhere?  If so can you direct me to it?  I'd like to try it on my current scene to see what kind of effect it will deliver.

These two threads tell you all about gamma correction in DS:

    http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/22310/#329211

    http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/54913/

I'm not sure who this 'render expert' is or what they were rendering in, but, as far as I know and as far as the above threads are concerned 2.2 is the way to go. My render settings are below those may be from 4.6 but I haven't really changed them since then.

Thanks for the links.  Wow, that second link really explains a lot for me.  I've been dealing with overly bright pale skins by darkening them via Difuse.  Parris explains that using gamma correction on both the render settings and on the individual skins fixes this problem by giving surfaces a more even tone.  I can't wait to try this out.

The teeth look natural and not overly white...well done.

Well, I decided to stick with my original rendering methods, as I find that trying to correct everything with the Gamma 2.2 is just too much work.  I don't use AoA shaders either for the same reason.  I do appreciate all of your input though, so thank you.

Thanks for the explanation, alken. I have had gamma on in my settings.

Will try with gamma off, as you suggested.

I also do not like to correct everything with gamma 2.2, so I will experiment with your setup even more.

    Horses for courses I guess,

To get anything looking good takes work and I find there are no quick fixes. If it gets results I'm prepared to put the work in. Anna looks so much better with Khory's settings.

Here's a great texture and a great character, Sulaiman by Morris. Oddly, he uses the Daz Default shader by default, not known that since M4. Still, I updated him with the AoA shader and Khory's settings. Then I did an old version, which will make a great henchman.

So I lied...decided to give Gamma Correction 2.2 another try.  I had to strip all the shaders and start from scratch since most vendors create their content with GC turned off.  I'm using only the old fashioned basic DAZ shaders for 3Delight.  Same light set-up as before but majorly tweaked, such as my shadows are now on full blast.  I had to set Gain in the render settings to between 1.5 - 2.0 (otherwise everything looked washed out).  I'm still working on getting the lip gloss, eye moisture, and innner mouth to look like my non-gamma renders.

Skin texture: Adaline for G3F by Fred Winkler Art (lips and nails are my own color)
