Hmm, there's potential, but, she does look oddly mannequin like, I seem to see that a lot in skin not done in 3Delight. Here's my latest, this time the skin is set up according to Mustakettu's SSS tutorial.
CHEERS!
Bjorn rendered in Daz Studio 4.8 Pro Beta using Iray with my own tweaked version of the Iray Optimised Genesis 2 Male MAT shaders.
Scene lit with Camera Headlamp and an HDRI called 'Sierra Madre B' kindly available free from http://www.hdrlabs.com/sibl/archive.html
:-)
Pretty cool,
Though I don't remember Bjorn being that much of a wimp, LOL! I've been playing with him too. I revised my Glass Eyes MAT (from Spyro's tutorial.). I had the cornea and IOR set wrong and things were a tad bright. I think I'm getting there now though.
CHEERS!
PS (I had that HDR link saved already and I'd forgotten about it!)
A few more tweaks, like putting in a different diffuse colour and reducing the iris size on Rob's eyes and I think I'm there. And this is good old UberSurface, UberSurface2 and 3Delight!
Thanks Rogerbee,
I don't remember Bjorn being such a wimp either ! and I couldn't understand why our renders of the same guy looked so different until you mentioned 'wimp' and I realised some Bjorn shape and morphs were missing because I had put the textures onto the basic G2 Base Male. :red:
Anyway, I also think he looks cool, just like your UberSurface and 3Delight renders of him which are stunning. They look like a photographers studio portrait. I never got the hang of UberSurface or UberEnvironment, possibly because it didn't grab my enthusiasm like Luxrender, and now Iray has.
I am a great fan of Spyro's artwork, do you have a link please for his eyes tutorial ?
Just for fun, my latest Iray render using the Bjorn texture, but this time not such a "wimp". Probably more "Movie Heart-throb Star"
Cheers. :-)

The 'real' Bjorn, this time....no impostors

That's better!
Spyro's tutorial is here on post #82:
http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/6376/P75
If you use it with G2 you need to apply the cornea settings to the eye reflection as well. You should also dial the Index Of Refraction to 1.4 and not 1.0 as he stated.
CHEERS!
EDIT:
How come your Bjorn has a hairy chest!? Mine only ever had smooth textures!
Thanks Rogerbee, I like both my versions of Bjorn, but will now do some more of him with his rightful base morphs.
Also, thanks for the Spyro link, I will read his eye tutorial, but wonder if this will only apply to 3Delight renders. Will have to read and find out. Eyes make the character appear realistic and 'alive' so is a very important feature.
Bjorn, along with others in my renders have hairy chests, armpits, etc thanks to this amazing product for G2M by MikeyMadeMe http://www.daz3d.com/real-hairy
I have always championed this product because it places what I consider 'realistic' body hair, and each body section has its own individual hair piece. Just click and add to your character, apply one of the different provided hair texture colours, and then use the morphs to make hair longer, thicker, etc.
Well worth the money.
MikeyMadeMe has also produced the same set for Genesis. http://www.daz3d.com/real-hairy-for-genesis
Cheers :-)
Thanks, that's really cool, now we need eyebrows as they look odd when rendered with SSS like mine are. You can do it with geometry shells but they are a bit of a faff and I'd rather leave it to someone that knows what they're doing rather than a hamfisted klutz like me! I'm amazed I get away with what I do!
Spyro's tricks only work in 3Delight the other render engines will use their own brand of magic.
CHEERS!
PS (I barely touch Genesis these days.)
I'm a huge fan of real hairy and unshaven (beard). Can't wait until unshaven for g2m is out!!
And yeah, I'd love a similar product for eyebrows.
cute topless guys. thanks for posting. ;)
I haven't bought mine very decent clothes yet. In fact, they're both naked! Not that you'd see anything as I don't own any Pro bundles!
CHEERS!
I have lots of clothes for Genesis females. Do what I do: dress Justin in a schoolgirl outfit. I forgot to apply the sub surface shader to Justin. Sorry for the small size.
LOL! I think she wants them back!
CHEERS!
Now we know how Gareth stays so fit. http://www.daz3d.com/gareth-hd-for-michael-6
Rendered in DAZ Studio 4.8 Pro Beta with Iray. Scene is lit using an HDRI from DimensionTheory's Yosemite pack. http://www.daz3d.com/hdr-prosets-yosemite-pack-two

Not bad, what is that background?
The one way to forever make Daz figures look unrealistic is to pose them in front of photo backdrops. Until Daz figures break the 'uncanny valley' which, even with Iray, they are a long way off doing, they should never pose with things that are from real life. Daz assets look best in Daz settings. I do so many portrait renders because I spend all my money on characters and textures and not on scenes. However, Dreamlight has several really nice freebies for when you don't want to open your wallet:

Hi Rogerbee,
The background is from the HDRI light environment dome made by the PA DimensionTheory.
I do agree that mixing photo backgrounds with DAZ characters can end up not looking that convincingly real. However, a couple of the renders I have posted using Iray and an HDRI dome photo background have been quite successful, but do still look a little 'unreal'. I know exactly the 'uncanny valley' senario you are explaining.
I have seen quite a few Iray renders where people are now using camera depth of focus to blur the HDRI backgrounds, or using textured backgrounds for portraits.
Many thanks for the link, I will look at these particular Dreamlight products.
:-)
Yeah, those Dreamlight products are great!
CHEERS!
...placing figures further from the camera helps as well. I rarely do portraits save for character design tests and even then they are full body so I can check the physique, height, and proportions. I have also spent a good deal of time working with SSS and feel that I am able to get close enough.
Hair is more an issue (particularly in Iray) as it is usually transparency mapped as well as not being dynamic. There are tricks that can be done but strand based (Garibaldi, LAMH) and fibremesh hair are better solutions. Unfortunately both tend to be huge resource hogs when rendering in Iray or Lux because of high polycounts as they have to be converted to a static .obj. .
Not having a good dynamic cloth engine like Poser's also makes the clothing hang or drape unrealistically when posing. Daz's Dynamic system is "closed ended" meaning one cannot "clothify" content that isn't specifically produced with the Optitex™ design suite. It also requires an expensive plugin to make full use clothing content in question. The only workaround is to run the dynamic simulation in Poser, save the clothing and character as a .obj and import it back into Daz . The downside of this is all the rigging is stripped from from the character so no final pose adjustments can be made.
The HD morphs are supposed to add a bit more realism to the muscular structure and such, but for many they tend to be resource hogs as well.
Another area that bothers me, particularly in close ups, are eyebrows as 99% of the time, they are painted on and baked in to the facial texture map. This causes two issues: not being able to match brow colour to hair colour, and because they are not a mesh like hair is, they produce no shadow effects. There are workarounds but these tend to involve painting out the baked on brows in a 2D application and using a strand based hair generator to create new ones, a very tedious task.
The only way to get a totally "photo real" figure, hair, and clothing would be to either model it all from scratch and rig it yourself (a very painstaking process indeed beyond the expertise of many of us here), or dump a tonne of money into purchasing physically correct figures, clothing and hair meshes (often not rigged and with no morphs) from one of the Pro content sources.
...oh, and have the expensive pro grade software to use it all with.
Just playing around with http://www.daz3d.com/wireframe-and-hologram-shaders
I like very much Marshian assets - he is very good at making them.

Daz Studio Beta 4.8, 3Delight render.
That is really cool,
I've decided to stop putting test renders in this thread and will put them in Kettu's, then he and his compatriots can help me towards finished renders I can post in here.
CHEERS!
I'm tempted to render Justin without a shirt on.
Young teens Justin
The skin on the girl is Janessa. Her skin looks nice in distant lights. I need more clothes for my male characters.
Go for it, I'm sure neither of them will mind!
CHEERS!
Thanks, Rogerbee.
Do you mean this thread?
3Delight Laboratory Thread: tips, questions, experiments

May be I should also put my test 3Delight renders there.
You can if you want, I don't mind. It's just that mine look a bit samey and I thought you'd like something different to look at.
CHEERS!
I like doing portrait or photo studio type scenes from time to time. Especially when I have a bit of "render" block. There's nothing wrong with it. I've done a few more than I normally do lately as I just updated to Carrara 8.5, and I have been experimenting with using Genesis, and getting used to the minor interface changes.
That being said, I have also been experimenting with using different procedural shader functions, such as functions that utilize elevation to create foam on the tops of the waves in the Ocean primitive:
http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/55137/
That ocean is amazing (I wish I could get to grips with Carrara - so much to learn and so little time to learn it...)
That is very neat and impressive evilproducer. :-)
Here is another of my Iray renders of Gareth https://www.daz3d.com/gareth-hd-for-michael-6
I really like this character, and have been adjusting skin shader and bump map settings. I think this is my most photorealistic render yet using Iray.
:cheese:
Thanks much!
The thread I linked to has the shader and scene file available from my Dropbox public folder, so if you have Carrara, you can check it out. Also, the Ocean doesn't come with Standard, but if you have the Standard Edition, you should still be able to opens it, you just can't edit the ocean. At least that's the way it used to work. ;-)
