It's time for me to watch a movie or something and stop all of this damn complaining I've been doing. Maybe I should go back to drinking.

...went to the local cinema down the block where they were showing a mint condition print of all time fave Sci-Fi classic, Forbidden Planet. It was the first film to use an entirely electronic soundtrack long before the days of the Moog. For each musical passage an individual circuit needed to be designed.

Nearly 60 years later I still find it spellbinding.and the vistas breathtaking (particularly the interior of the great Krell machine). This is one of those films that should never be remade (even though JM Straczynski is doing his best to try).

...oh, and the cinema is actually a pub-cinema so you can get a pint or two to sip while enjoying your favourite film.

    sounds good :) F P and a pint

To be honest, I can't stand old movies. I know I will get a bunch of boo's and hisses. Sorry! Give me a movie with CG and Bluray sound, lots of action and laughter, then I am there. The older movies are, well, too old. They look so fake, the sound quality is terrible and the acting is overly dramatic. I can do some John Wayne war movies & westerns and a few other older movies, but that is about it. I have a 65 inch Panasonic Plasma flat screen, that is heavier than hell, a helluva 7.1 surround sound system and of course a Sony Bluray player. I have to watch movies that make my eyes turn bloodshot and cause my ears to burst. I love it when I can feel the rumble of an action scene. One of my favorite scenes is the beginning of the first Transformer movie, when the helicopter transforms and starts shooting the hell out of the airbase. The crystal clear and extremely loud sound just blows me away. The picture quality is pretty good too.
    Boo! Hiss!
In defense of "old" movies, without them there would be no:
Humphrey Bogart ("Casablanca", "The Maltese Falcon", well all of his films are wonderful, really)
    Marx Brothers
Clint Eastwood's spaghetti westerns (yep, 50 years makes those "old")
Favorites of mine too numerous to mention.

That said, I love most of the latest stuff, too; although I'll take good writing, acting and directing over special effects any day.
And I'll bet you would come up with a hefty list of old movies you love, Led, once you started a tally of those "John Wayne war movies & westerns and a few other older movies". :)

My current new favorite is Marvel's "Avengers" (yeah I love me a lot of "Boom! Pow!" , too).

You're not wrong, Led! Everyone is entitled to their own movies to be fond of. Heck I even get a kick out of "Plan 9 from Outer Space"!

And speaking of "Forbidden Planet", has anyone ever noticed how much Gene Roddenberry "borrowed" from that film to make TOS of "Star Trek"? Like the whole cinematic look, sets and stuff? And even the landing party consists of a captain. first officer, and the doctor. Sound familiar? It really set the standard for 1960's SF TV - look at "Lost in Space". "Oh, the pain, the pain..."

    OK, I'm shutting up now.

Yes 65 inches for my TV, or 6.5 inches if we are talking about something else, except in cold water, then only 0.65 inches.

...nope, 5 day calls for mid 70s to low 80s Mom's day will be a bust, 60s & rain, but that is a week away.

That's adorable. And lifelike. I'm always impressed by people who can make fantasy creatures look like their anatomy works.
