"Hey, who turned out the lights!?"

Perhaps add another spot or distant light.

I have just tried to help Bobvan, because he use a Reality, but area lights in Daz Studio need a different direction of normals.

    Fair enough,

I probably won't bother with area lights myself.

You are welcome, Bobvan. I have made the same mistake in the beginning of setting up my scene.

I don't get it. I don't have any issues using the Area lights other than the bug that pops in a Uber Area light with headlamp blocker when I first pick one.

I don't do anything special to the area light, heck I've even made one from scratch with the shader mixer.

I was pointing the normals of the plane the wrong way cause they work the opposite of Reality Mesh lights I dont play with mixer shader using Reality..

hmm I'll have to rotate the plane the other way then to see what happens..

I figured out the volume camera to simulate volumetric lights/shadows, currently adding some atmosphere to my Alien Visitor render I did yesterday.

Sounds like Lantios lights are getting lots of love here, and good results. However, I'm a bit biwildered by the number of light sets offered.

Which set would you guys say is the best to get for DS 4.5? I'm mostly interested in portrait renders, face and full figure shots, but I also do scene renders as well.

Wish they were on sale more often too!

    Thanks.

I wasn't happy with this one. i finished it up early last year, but never did anything with it. I later used various elements from this picture in other pictures. Kinda like recycling the post worked background so they didn't go to waste.

I'd say for portraits these would probably suit your needs:

They're next on my list as I do pretty much what you do. Once I'm happy with them I might move onto his other sets. I'd say any of his other sets would be good for scenes.

Yeah that does seem like a good choice, but it is a bit pricey. It is just confusing because there are so many sets that seem to be trying to do the same thing. Lantios Lights, Lights 2, Core Lights, Core Lights 2, etc...

The Portraits set seems like it would be best for studio style shots, and some of the other sets seem like they would work best for actual interior / exterior scenes. I might want to go with one of the scene focused sets because I do lots of those, and really am bad at setting up all the lights myself. Portrait scenes are a bit easier.

I usually do portraits while I get the hang of the figure with all the textures and shaders, I might as well have them looking good while I do so. In that respect, the portrait lights will do me for that, but, once I get into scenes more then the lights will follow suit.

    Nice going,

    Big YAY for me!!

I just scored the Genesis Gorilla for on FastGrab for $7.49! I used up the last of my store credit and it cost me $6.51, that's less than £5! I've always wanted a gorilla as I'm a BIG King Kong fan. The best thing is that I can use Garibaldi Hair on him and do a full on Kong job with it. I am full-on STOKED!! Yeah baby!!

    Nice work,

The first looks really good. The shadow on the second one looks a wee bit sharp, it might look better with a softer shadow setting.

I agree with Roderbee, try adding a value to shadow softness on the light... Something like 4-6%, if it's deep shadow maps. It should blur and soften the more distant cast shadow with a smooth transition. :)

yeah its a sharp shadow, I was more interested in how the HSS was working than making a perfect shot.. the photographer in me is still yelling at me to fix the scene,

still working on getting just the right studio lighting set up,

    Hey guys.

I picked up Latinos Core Lights 1 and tried it with a fairly basic scene. I think it turned out fairly well, nothing special and room for improvement of course.

I used some of the suggested render settings from this thread. I also applied the HSS and used the recommended settings for that.

Any suggestions? It does some a bit grainy, and I wouldn't mind pushing the realism and detail a bit. Still, the render only took 14 minutes in DS 4.5 on my crummy laptop, so that is nice.

well I made the lighting softer, but I must have done something different with the HSS,

    she looks plastic..
