    Nice sequence,

They look better than I've seen, the backgrounds really pop.

Here's another Rob, this time with Fresnel set up.

Omnifreaker seemed to recommend a setting of 50% with a falloff of 1.09. I can't see much difference between this and the last Rob render I did without it set. Has anyone got any recommendations for settings that might make a difference, or should I just not bother with it!?

Comparison renders will be most welcome

That reminds me of the time someone recommended putting shading rate at 0.10 instead of 0.20 in the render settings. I did not see ANY difference except it took 5 times as long 0.10...

Yeah, I think I saw that somewhere too,

I did a really nice one with the Marie texture and S5 last night, her skin looks amazing!

    Here's one that pleased me,

I never could get Natasha to light well in Poser, but, thanks to the HSS and DS, I can now! I can get nice results on the eyes if I use Spyro's techniques on the cornea and sclera alone.

    Enjoy

    Two questions:

    1) For HSS, are you guys using the same techniques in the guides posted for Gen 4, or have you had to modify the settings and techniques for Genesis?

    2) For UVs, do you guys typically use the default Gen 4 UVs, or the Genesis / Gen 5 UVs?

The settings, and indeed the shader is the same, so yes, Kraig's guide and Omni's old one still apply. The Elite textures designed for V5/M5 like Bree and Phillip use their own UV's and older ones seem to use Gen 4, at least that's what I've experienced.

Here's another that made me happy,

Maya, never fond of her in Poser, now though, in DS, I really like her, thanks to Spyro even her default eyes look great.

    Very nice,

No spoilers please, we don't get it on Freeview till much later.

    Here's Amy,

That hair took AGES to render, doesn't look all that complicated either. It never ceases to amaze me that in weeks with DS I'm getting results it took years to get in Poser.

Curious, what were your settings for the hair? I'm not seeing anything which should have contributed heavily to the render time unless you had the shading rate at 0.1 or something. Shading rate on things like UberEnvironment and render settings are a guaranteed way to kill your render times, but don't always give noticeably different results. If your shading rate is too low, you might want to adjust it to see how much quicker it renders and if there's any real differences.

Edit: Playing around with UberSurface2 trying to get the best out of it. No postwork besides adding the background.

The settings for the hair were as standard, save for setting the lighting model to matte. I do however have a shading rate of 0.10 and always have UberEnvironment set at 4XHi. It's horses for courses I guess, some hair just takes longer.

How are you finding UberSurface? I only use it on the corneas and use the HSS for everything else. Is it, as Omnifreaker said, an advance over the HSS? It struck me that a purpose made shader would be better than a 'one fits all' one, wouldn't it!?

    Here's Shaw,

I love how, even though there's no light reflected in his eyes, there's still life in them.

CHEERS!The thing to note about UberSurface is that it was intended to be an upgrade for the original HSS and does so in a big way by adding a lot more controls over how the surface behaves. UberSurface 2 adds an extra layer to the mix, allowing for dual specular maps and dual reflection maps, among other things. It can, for example, add scratches to an otherwise 'perfect' complexion, or interesting highlights using reflection. I personally find it simply amazing to work with, and better still, there's an 'upgrade' setting which doesn't affect any existing material it's applied to. I've gotten into the habit of automatically converting my surfaces to use UberSurface 2, even if I don't plan on using all of the settings. It's just that much of a difference to my eyes.

The above example was an experiment, though. I actually switched off specular entirely for the render and moved the spec maps over to reflection strength. Since specular is basically 'fake' reflection, I wanted to test how it would respond if I used a proper raytraced reflection setting to bring out the details. Being honest, I rather like the results even though they're far from perfect. I didn't make any changes to the hair though, which was my downfall. I plan on redoing the last image with some decent settings to bring some life into her hair as well.

Of course down the downfall of relying on UberSurface so much is that it's entirely incompatible with Reality. Realtiy's 'guestimation' really throws off the fine tuning you make in Daz and there's no way to get those settings back in Reality.

Sounds interesting, but I'd be lost without some sort of guide. I just about know where I am with the HSS without needing to do too much else.

There's actually a pretty good starter tutorial on the Omnifreaker website, which is handily linked to in Daz under 'instructions'. Who knows, it might be worth expanding your comfort zone a little until it becomes second nature. The results can be incredible.

    Thanks,

I'll see, I'm happy with what's there for now. Constantly setting loads of things from scratch all the time can get tedious and I'm pleased enough with the results I'm getting from what I have been setting up already without doing too much more.

I just want to get the basics down pat before I get too adventurous, it'd be like getting an origami book and starting at the back.

Wouldn't that mean you'd start with a paper crane and end up with a sheet of blank A4? :D

    LOL!

Not really, it'd be akin to turning a piece of A3 into the HMS Victory when you've only ever done paper darts!

Here's one that I've always loved and she's worked brilliantly no matter where she's been, Maelwenn's Vanessa.

Amy's skin reminds me of a skin texture that I have. I forgot the name of my texture though. If I find the skin, I'll post a render of it.

And so I did try one of the day presets,

And WOW!! I used to get to the end of my tether with the Elite Ariana texture, nothing I ever did in Poser seemed to make it look good. Now though, in DS, it's become part of what I consider to be one of my best ever renders. This is what I've been striving for for years!

I had to cheat with the eyes as the camera angle wasn't right for there to be true reflections in the eyes, I felt they looked a little dead so I used eye textures from Auria.

I love this, and, I love DS!!
