There's no doubt that Reality IS a slow render system. I find I need a minimum of 100 samples before it's noise free, and that's on very simple setups. Advanced ones require as much as 1000+ samples, which literally eats up countless hours of time. Again though, it's got the most realistic lighting engine of any render engine for Daz Studio, so naturally it's going to do a lot more calculations to get everything right.

I'm trying to find my balance between the two. I find materials harder to work with in Reality than the Daz shaders, which tends to result in rather flat images. Ironically, the Reality shaders have fewer things to tweak so you'd think it would be easier. Go figure. I think that's the major reason I've preferred to use 3Delight for most of my work, since there's a wealth of options on shaders like UberSurface which can be tweaked to get just the right effect.

I still want to master Reality, but as most of my work with it tends to be a noise-ridden mess, I don't expect much of it will be posted on the forums any time soon.

Nice, I like that hair, which is it?

The light rig if anyone is interested

All distance lights at about 22 deg angle

    Interesting,

I always find plan views of lighting rigs confusing as you never know the translations relative to the ground plain. We work in 3D so 3D representations of where lights are make more sense. I had to guess exactly where Caisson had placed his lights and the positions I arrived at seemed to work. One thing I'm glad about in DS is that the lights seem to stay fixed when you move the camera. In Poser the lights moved when the camera did and it was really annoying.

I'm happy with the Lantios setup, it's perfect for my needs.

Its not Reality Render engine its the Luxrender. Reality a plug in that bridges materials from DS to Lux, Its a common mistake made and yes it does require patience.. Most times when I try going back to 3Delight I cannot no longer get satisfactory results but that's just me..

    32 bit!?

Seriously!? I've gone for 64bit since I knew it existed as standard for Win7. I hope your new system is 64 as it does make a difference.

When my single core bought it after a year I decided that I was going to get one man enough to tackle anything, and, so far, this has proved to be it. God knows what it'd be like if I still had AVG with its link scanner strangling my memory resources. Windows Defender handles 91% of nasties and you just don't know it's there. The PC mags like it and so do I. The only drawback is you have to set aside a whole afternoon for it to do a scan, which will be tomorrow!

Next week I'll get GenX and will spend much of the week getting to grips with it

I use Reality as an encompassing term a lot of the time, simply because it usually avoids confusion amongst newer members. It's just a habit of mine. But yes, I do realise that Luxrender is its own beast and that Reality is just converting the materials and models to use with it.

I just said that cause over at Rendo one of the Lux Devs pointed that out LOL but I knew that too I have produced well over 1000 renders coming up on a year so its not that bad....

& in typical fashion I am most likely going to going to get my third system upgrade in the fall which is why I am most likely going to install my win 8 upgrade one of these days, cause like it or not I will have to get used to it for when I do get my next system... I also use AVG I can barely stand it most times...nothing but false positives...

I'd seriously ditch AVG and just use Defender when you get Win 8. Most AV's are too bloated and can do more harm than good.

I see, how is FiberMesh hair to work with in DS? I tried using Guillame Hair in Poser and it ground to a halt when it was loading it, I never got to do anything else with it. I actually got a store credit refund on it. If it's better suited to DS I might give it another try.

Initally, I was going to share a render of Amy, but, I feel she needs more work.

Alternately, I have also done more work with Vanessa. That texture still floors me when it still holds up, it was one of the first 'photo real' textures for V4 that I remember seeing. Even with HSS and Lantios lights she still looks incredible. Stan Winston and Male M3dia have taught me that it's as much about what's under the skin as it is about what's on it.

...that got me too with Poser along with that odd "light sphere" to the bottom left corner of the viewport. Seemed a lot trickier to use than the transition/rotation sliders in Daz studio.

The other nice feature of the basic Daz lighting system is that you can view through the light as if it were a camera making adjustments and aiming a lot simpler. Just go to the Camera Menu in the upper right corner of the viewport and select the particular light you want to view through. No need to parent a camera to the light as in Poser or Carrara.

    Nice!

I was able to get Amy done last night. I was really tricky getting life into her skin, if the diffuse was too dark it looked dead and if the subsurface colour was wrong it looked overlit. I got there in the end though.

I realised last night, while looking at Maelwenn's store, that there were DS versions of Vanessa's textures. So I've re-rendered her using them.

Of course, I then realised that I'd been using the Poser versions of the Elite textures and NOT the DS versions! I'd been adding the HSS to those textures, so no wonder they looked odd! DOH!!

Back to the drawing board again, LOL!

TheSea was talking about a new setup he's been playing with using a relatively small cylinder to bounce the raytracing off of.
The backlighting on this picture is the bounce off the cylinder. He's been using a blank wall, but I put a picture on mine. First pass for the character with lights and cylinder "Visible in Render" Off. Second with no lights and cylinder visible with ambient turned up. Screen filter on black background to combine them and the usual postwork.

I love the old Arkangel outfit, but I never have a reason to use it. Uberenvironment plays well with it. Autofitted it here to Satsuki. Really need to convert it the right way since the skirts get creased...

ETA: Lights are from ARTCollaborations' Andrea for Genesis Young Teen Julie. Just moved around a bit.

My attempts to get more out of Reality. I seem to get similar results no matter how I play around with the settings though, and the ACSEL shaders seem to make all the skin as shiny as polished pearls. Oh well, it's all good training for when we get proper skin shaders later this year with Reality 3.

I actually like the previous version of the render. The lights look a bit bright in the latest render. Funny, I have the same issue with EHSS and Daz Studio. lol I need to adjust the lights in Daz Studio often. Thanks for sharing the renders Rogerbee.

Since DreamLight seems to have little interest in updating LDP, Clound9 has been my outdoor light set of choice. I tend to experience fewer crashes with it than with Lantios.

I'm with you on the Vid tutorials as well. With my poor connectivity it is a real bother to deal with all the pauses due to buffering.

Daz used to have written tutorials on the old site. Just one more useful feature that disappeared with the site "downgrade" seven months ago.

Yeah, there's a lot of stuff gone AWOL from the old forums, they should allow us to log in and have read only access.

I've been busy rendering and enjoying the results I've been getting from the appropriate Daz shaders.
