Life is so unfair, isn't it.  But would it be easier to become a star basketball player, or famous architect, or corporate CEO?  Not much room at the top of any profession.  Might as well give up and become a drudge shaking a fist at the winners.  I'm sure there's an Aesop's Fable about this situation.  Or perhaps a Fractured Fairytale. frown

Worried:  Hurricane track has it going through major parts of Florida.  I have oodles of relatives still down there.  Some right on the beach in big tall condominiums and some on low ground near the shores.  I've been through a low category-3 storm (the one that brought the tree down on our livingroom and took out nearly a dozen of our palm trees, ripped shingles and nails from the roof and scattered them throughout the yard, destroyed the area's power for 5 days, took down traffic lights and left 3 feet of vegetation debris everywhere) but a category-4 storm would be the tipping point with complete roofs flying off, some buildings flying apart, condominium windows blowing out, major flooding, etc.  Doesn't look good.sad

After the numerous hurricanes of 2004, the insurance rates went through the roof (unintended pun) and many middle class people opted to risk "going naked" (sans insurance), and several insurance companies even stopped selling in Florida.  After this storm, people will probably start being scared OUT of Florida because they won't be able to afford insurance and the storms are getting untenable.surprise  Which is probably OK because in 50 years the coasts will be underwater anyway.frown

Not anymore; have you checkedd lately? It looks like it will stay just offshore of Florida and skirt up up the coast to us on the NC Outer Banks. I'm really worried about this one.

  • Why are all the elf ears I have for genesis 8 female the dagger style? I prefer softer more subtle elf ears. Vulcaneque, y'know?

Also, I don't seem to have any fangs for my genesis 8 gals. I see some likely candidates for that though. Rachelle Vamp HD, Viollet HD for Tasha 8 (although I don't have Tasha 8), Amaris HD for Victoria 8 (I do have Victoria 8) look like they might have the fang sliders (although Viollet and Amaris look too much like Sasha). Or I could go with EJ teeth collection... that has a variety of options.

And I need a proper Kitsune set of ears and tails on my wishlist... or did i find some already?

Why am I so random today?

I just realized this is Labor Day Weekend.surprise  I'm stuck in the house with no wheels.sad  Guess I'll just toddle off to the grocery store and buy some milk and eggs.  Whoopie, celebration! frown  I keep catching myself thinking of nice little mini-adventures like a household sale, or a drive around the lake or a visit to the cheese shop, or lunch at Red Lobster, or even Dairy Queen or a couple of krautdogs, or a trip to the Indian reservation to buy gasoline.  Then reality hits and I have to force myself to scan my budget spreadsheet and revel in the money that I'm saving.  Perhaps by mid-winter when even bundling up and walking to the grocery store will be a two hour adventure in itself, I'll be resigned to my fate of having more money than I have places to spend it.  But then I remember, on-line auctions, and also thank Bezos for Amazon!indecision

Especially with this one.  It's been described as very erratic and unpredictable.  They were sure it was going to hit Puerto Rico, then it shifted to the north and mostly left them in peace.  But this is why they have that Cone of Uncertainty.  Hurricanes have always been rather unpredictable.  Just less so in recent years, but the further away it is, the more uncertainty there is.

Okay, so a bit of a more serious question from me: Has any of you ever had your first name legally changed? As of right now, my "real" name isn't Anne, but that name has stuck with me in my head since I was a toddler. It's not so much that I hate my real name, it just doesn't feel like me. It's a name that several other people in my family have had, including my cousin (as a middle name). There's a specific emytology to it that just doesn't fit, a fact I think I remember my mother pointing out once, when she was disappointed in me.

My friend Dani changed her name for the exact same reason, as soon as she became an adult. (Her orginal name was really pretty, it just wasn't her.) An aquaintance from another forum changed her name from "the result of her Mum watching too many soap-operas" to Ruth, after someone accidentally called her that and she realised how much she would love for it to be her name. In both cases, it seems like their family and friends accepted their new name. My real-life social circle is... well, really conservative, and name changes are seen as a bit unnecessary. "Everyone" in my family hates the name they were given, but "it's how they've always been known," and how people would still think of them even if official papers said otherwise. I do have a "pretty" middlename, but it's just so many syllables. frown

I’ve had my last name changed several times... technically three times... But I was a kid then and that’s a long story, but it screwed up soooo many things as I got older.

My first name has never changed but people constantly change it for me... it’s Victor, but if someone asks me my name it usually becomes Hector, Vincent or Nick... not “Nick” because I said “Vic”, I’ll say Victor and the person will say “okay Nick, I’ll get that package for you in a minute...” At this point I’ve given up giving my full name and just shorten it to “Vic” because I’m sick of Hector and Vincent, and they’ll probably turn it into Nick anyway...

My favorite is when I say “Vic” and they turn it into Frank or Tom... I went to get new tires a while ago and I was the only person there and the guy who took my info apparently had an attention problem... some other guy came along to ask me a question, looked at the clipboard with my name and said “Frank?”... since I was the only person there it was obvious who he was looking for but come on WTF, Frank and Vic sound nothing alike and it wasn’t noisy in the place... Restaurants are the same, they’ll ask for a name and I’ll say Vic and they’ll say Dave and I’ll say “sure, why not...”

My old username “Lord Vicore” was from a similar screwup.

And just to clarify, I don’t have a strange accent, forked tongue, lip or tongue piercings, tusks, or huge buck teeth that might interfere with pronunciation.

Complaint:  Why are modern keyboards so flimsy?frown   This is the second identical HP keyboard that has worn the "N" decal off of the "N" keycap, and developed a depression on the "Space bar".  I miss the old keyboards that had mechanical movements and went "click" when you depressed them and had molded two color plastic keycaps that would never wear through the letter, and could substitute for cricket bats.  I regret that I've actually discarded plenty of those old keyboards in my foolish youth. sad

It's not that I don't know where the "N" key is.  After all, it hasn't moved but I'm a neatnic and things out of place or unbalanced tug at my reality.indecision

What are you doing to wear the N key out? I still have one of those sturdy keyboards (1999 vintage, I think) and the E key is looking slightly faded, so I don't think the colour went quite all the way through.

Non-complaint:  It's 8:30 in the morning and I'm listening to the Buffalo classical radio station over the internet (WNED https://tunein.com/radio/WNED-FM-945-s21414/) playing Beethoven Symphony #7.  Enough said!heart  (head 'splode; the guy was completely deaf at this pointsurprise)

    Beethoven: Symphony #7 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-4788Tmz9Zo

Richard uses his mind to type.

Usually when my keyboard dies it is because someone (not me) poured diet pepsi or water or tea into it. Or someone (not me) let it get gunked up with her hair, make-up, lotion, and assorted grossness. Speaking of which... I need to clean my keyboards of the accumulated yuck. Can I put them in the dishwasher?

No, don't do that.  Get a Corsair RGB keyboard.  They light up in whatever way you wish.  Are you red colorblind?  Pick other colors.  Bored?  Change it!

Pro Tip:  A $2.00 2-inch paintbrush from Home Depot is AWESOME for cleaning the human skin and hair detritus from keyboards.  I'm serious!  Get a 2-inch one and a 1-inch one.  Great for cleaning that stuff.  And for dusting off little things that get dust in the smallest of cracks.

This cracked me up. :) My first name is "Karl" which I understand can be hard to hear sometimes. I don't even try to ask people to pronounce or spell my last name correctly most of the time.

My favorite, though, was when I was spelling my name for someone on the phone who was going to send me a letter. I said "It's Karl, with a 'K', ..." like I normally do and then spelled my last name. A few days later I got a letter addressed to "Carl Withakay [last name]".

    Okay, now that's funny.

They won't be underwater.  People keep saying that, but they weren't underwater thousands of years ago when early man got himself frozen under the glaciers.  If the coasts were under water, then we'd be finding human and mammoth bones encased in ice while they were swimming.  Not while they were doing bipedal or quadrapedal type things.  And we wouldn't be finding mammoths, we'd be finding fish that were swimming when the deep freeze came.

The big question for me is... really, how SLOW do you have to be that a gacier catches you off guard?

Ooga:  "You hear about Uugg and family?"

    Booga:  "No, what happen?"

Ooga:  "Were zonked at night after long day on hunt and cooking.  And then glacier sneak up!  They frozen under 20 trees of ice now, along with big wolly mammoth and whole herd of big wolly rhino."

Booga:  "Tsk, tsk!  Glacier evil.  But Uugg always slow one."

Ooga:  "Ooogh, right?  When glacier cover hunting ground, camp, and fire, it time to drag family away by hair and leave!"

Booga:  "Word!  Hey, do know if Uugg woman need man who can hunt now?"

Ooga:  "No, Ugg woman ice woman now too."

Booga:  "Shame.  Look good in polar bear skin on cold day!"

Aaaah, but none of this will matter anyway, because in 5 billion years, we'll all be vaporized as Earth's orbit passes through the expanding diameter of our sun.  That's SO much better!

It's not THAT unpredictable.  Back on Monday it was headed for Disney's parking lot.  But very consistently for the last few days, the track has been moving more and more to the right with every 3-hour update.  This is NOT a sneaky glacier!  At this rate, by the time it's supposed to... ahem, "not hit" (Monday night), it'll be more of a risk for the UK than it will be for Florida.

Still watching it, of course, because I don't want to be like Uugg, rest his soul.  wink  But this one isn't the end of the world.  cheeky

I don't spend as much time there as I used to, for two main reasons:
    1) My webcomic satisifies my creative urges better, and
    2) I'm spending much less time online due to the negativity I'm seeing too much of. Internet getting uglier every day.

Not anymore; have you checkedd lately? It looks like it will stay just offshore of Florida and skirt up up the coast to us on the NC Outer Banks. I'm really worried about this one.

Hmmm..., well, might still hit Florida hard, you never can tell.  The weather guys can be wrong.  For example, they were wrong last night! frown (*sigh*)  Millions of dollars, thousands of people, 21st century science, and 8 hours still blows your predictions out of the water (unintended pun).indecision

Especially with this one.  It's been described as very erratic and unpredictable.  They were sure it was going to hit Puerto Rico, then it shifted to the north and mostly left them in peace.  But this is why they have that Cone of Uncertainty.  Hurricanes have always been rather unpredictable.  Just less so in recent years, but the further away it is, the more uncertainty there is.

    ...major 'plaint.

Those electric rental scooters that are showing up in many cities need to be banned as the people who use them are totally careless. (they are banned in some countries).

Tonight when I was at a favourite hangout, I got my beer and exited go to the table I was sitting at outside when I had to jump back (not an easy task with my creaky joints) to not get hit by some idiot barrelling down the sidewalk at full speed on one of those infernal machines.  As I recovered from that and continued to to my table another idiot on one of these scooters nearly clipped me from behind.  I yelled at him about almost hitting me and told him to get on the street (where these are supposed to be ridden as by law, that are motorised vehicles and not supposed to be used on the sidewalks) ) and he gave me backtalk. These things are a total bane to pedestrians.

Going to write to the city tomorrow about this.
