Complaint: I can't stand it. I've been staring at my PoppaBear computer for months knowing that the two LED fans visible through the front grill aren't color synchronized. They should be. I've tried weakly to resolve it, but hadn't delved deeply into the problem. So today I yanked his cords, and pulled him out from under the lab bench up to the operating table where I ended up completely redoing the cable management. But without finding anything amiss, although the cables are now pleasingly organized and not hindering the attachment of the rear sidepanel. Yay! Unfortunately, my front fan LED colors are still wonky. Upon further observation, I realized that one fan is displaying magenta (red+blue) as programmed, but the other fan is displaying only green. Hmmm... opposite side of the color wheel, the missing leg of the triad. Hmmm... is there a crossed wire somewhere? Plug turned around? The two fans are managed by separate ARGB header sockets, is there something I don't know about the motherboard ARGB socket configurations? The two fans are the same brand and model. Hmmm..., curiouser and curouser.
I guess I'm going to have to try other color combinations to see if the pattern holds.
Non-complaint: Wheee, nerd fun!
That depends on how far away it is, and how you're going to get there.
there is a bad storm on the way so I have to wait until tomorrow to travel.
I messed up! I spent my money ordering pizza and an overpriced soda. I should have saved the funds for real groceries. Maybe I can out some of the pizza in the freezer to last longer?
Putting pizza out of reach of your mouth helps it last longer.
Non-complaint: It hasn't been particularly hot around here (high 80s), but it has been humid yesterday and today, but now I hear much rain playing its song on the roof, and the wind is whipping around outside, and it just sounds cooler, whether it is or not.
Complaint: I still haven't found a solution to my fan color problem. However, I put a third identical fan into the system and it works properly, but the green one still doesn't. I think that these were the set of three 4-pin fans with 3-pin ARGB lighting that I purchased to replace the two stock fans that came with the case. Two of the new ones work OK, but I now suspect that the wonky green one is boogered. Although, I'm still struggling a bit trying to figure out the method behind the madness of the iQUE software driving the LED lighting. This case has no window. So, the only LED showing comes through the mesh front panel, two fans, one magenta, the other green. Blech. Yeah, I could change the other to green, but all my other machines lighting style is simple static magenta (red+blue). I don't like green, I like magenta.
Current possibilities are: a) wonky fan b) wonky fan cable or extension c) wonky ARGB pins or circuits on the motherboard. Wheee... more nerd fun!
Ooh, ooh, heavy heavy rain outside. As long as it stays out there I'm happy, until the house floats away.
..being retired the days tend to blend into one another. somtimes I actually have to look on the caldndar ..being retired the days tend to blend into one another. Sometimes I actually have to look on the calendar then realise I'm looking at the colander and the holes make absolutely no sense.
...that's why I don't bother with RGB stuff. as for one, when the case is all "buttoned up" cant see anything inside, and two, less trouble to deal with.
At the time of building, PoppaBear's motherboard was the first of my machines that had ARGB pin headers (3-pin) instead of just RGB(4-pin). Ooh, ARGB..., fancy! So, I had to try it. And I, having a disease that makes me want to attach something to every place that can be attached to, was helpless against the temptation. And of course PoppaBear's motherboard is a high end board so of course it has not just one little light on the board, it has a whole series of them arranged in at least three separate strings that can be sequentially or randomly illuminated. And of course it being my DAZing machine, has my best graphics card which, of course, came with some nice RGB lighting too. I have to admit that the world of RGB lighting is a gnarled mess of technology, and control software types, and although the iCUE software appears to work (so far) for all my needs, I am still confused by exactly how the iCUE lighting software works. It's not how I would have designed it. If I get it worked out, I'm considering getting a new case with a window, and letting PoppaBear's brilliance shine for the world to see. However, then I'd have to move him from under the workbench to a prominently visible throne. I'm not ready for that much nerd fun. And the killer for that idea is that after moving him to a new case then I'd be left with an empty case again, and you know what that means. ($$$$) Nope, for the time being, I'll just try to get his two front fans showing the same color. And since only the two front fans are visible, I actually turn off a lot of the other lights within the case. (I'm saving photons for a rainy day)
And yes, the technology of today's RGB sucks royal swamp water! What's with those miserably tiny little 3 & 4 pin connectors that barely like each other, much less mate forever. I have to hold them together with adhesive tape or tie-wraps. I think shrinkwrap tubing for cable joins would be better! And there's no way to secure the plug that actually connects to the motherboard, I've been considering putting a spot of glue or silicon caulk on it to ease my mind about vibration jiggling it loose.
I don't think I have time to finish eating breakfast. Nope I don't.
I didn't even have time to post this until I got to the doctor office,
Non-complaint: I've pretty much figured out how iCUE software works, with various "layers" of programming for the separate circuits of ARGB lights. Thinking that somehow I'd boogered up the "layers" thus causing my wonky fan to always be green. But no, nothing wrong with the programming. Also non-complaint about the fan lights themselves, because during boot time, all three lights in the wonky fan activate in its default, built-in, "rainbow" mode, so the red & blue LEDs themselves are not dead leaving only the green one.
I've tinkered with the BIOS and have enabled all LED activity all the time, so no wierd system states to worry about. So, now I'm down to possibly wiring issues, or motherboard ARGB circuit issues, or still possibly ARGB decoding circuit issues within the fan itself. So, in effect, not much progress at all.
I guess I'm going to have to dig back into my nicely organized cable management, and start replacing fans or at least fan connections. (*Sigh*, is it too much nerd fun yet?)
But honestly, I think the fan is kaput and needs to be replaced. I have a box of used low-end 120mm fans, to choose from, but most of them are not PWM fans and have limited control of the speed. And worse yet, some of them have permanent lights either static white, or some of them are static blue blades or rings.
Being gay does not make me an interior decorator, but clashing colors hurt my brain. In computers I simply like static, low brightness magenta, everywhere.
Non-complaint: Nothing wrong with my fans. Rewiring to put all ARGB fans on the 1st ARGB header and eliminating the 2nd ARGB header fixed the problem.
Complaint: After additional testing and eliminating cable splitter and extensions issues from the 2nd ARGB header indicates that it is two-thirds-dead. It's stuck on green, permanently.
Non-complaint: Immediate problem solved but I apparently have a slightly defective motherboard.
I'm back and nobody missed me ......spent 3 and a half weeks at my daughters getting to know the grand kids I went to help her and she took care of me my syaticia flared up ,the drive was 7 hours which didn't help ,but I had a very nice time and am hoping her husband gets life with no parole ,or early release ,he's been moaning that he's being picked on and can't understand why they haven't let him out since she didn't die .......he's a very sick individual.
Does anyone else save containers ? like the big pretzel containers or cheese ball containers ? I do and then store either things like packages of dried beans ,or rice ,flour etc in them or craft stuff ,my son and his wife came and "cleaned " while I was gone and threw out the newest containers that I had gotten because they felt I was just hoarding ,they also reaaranged and got rid of stuff they thoughtt was junk so I'm wondering how long it's going to take me to find my stuff they didn't throw out and figure out what they did throw out ......that they shouldn't have .......damn thing is I know they meant well but still ........
Nobody has the right to throw somebody else's stuff away!
my mother was like that, always throwing my brother's and my stuff out but hording crap of her own, it was of course her house though.
Not little things either, a piano and motor scooter in my case and motorcycle and car parts belonging to my brother from vehicles he was fixing, while she hoarded Empty washed fast food containers, jars, I too reuse them but I don't have multiple cupboards full of empty ones.
Hope your daughter is recovering well
...hope she's doing much better now.
Ugh Sciatica, I get it too now and then triggered by a nerve in my back that if I move wrong gets pinched.
Wendy it is amazing how well she is healing up ,what the kids now call the "incident" is equally amazing that so many things came together just perfectly to save her life ......and even the doctors have been amazed at how fast she has healed .
My parents are sorta hoarders ,minimal in the house but they have a barn and 2 huge sheds stuffed to the rafters , but they are depression kids so yes they save everything cause it might be needed ,I've struggled to not do that but I do buy somethings because I have a plan for the containers ,or save some small containers ,because I want some thing to put grease in to throw it away and not make a mess......
My daughter in law is a minimalist and their house looks like something from a magazine ,they have no kids by choice ,and everything is always perfect , to her I am a hoarder ......oh well
In my daughter in laws view she is preventing me from being a hoarder .......on the other hand my brother and his wife came and set of bug bombs while I was gone then he decided to mop the floors rearrange my bathroom and put non slip strips in my shower ,which was nice but it's gonna take me awhile to get things back where I like them .
You are right ,but they think they do to help you .......just gives me an excuse to buy more Cheeto Paws for the containers ......which is good I like them !!
I remember in the 70's mom washing and saving all the containers that came in, down to yogurt cups, but she had had a poor childhood with her mother.
Now she only saves the bigger ones that can be used to store (hoard?) stuff in the freezer(s)
There was a restraunt in town that actually tried pulling a stunt like that some years back. Owner burned it down intentionally for that reason but they got found out pretty quick.
Still a lot of work to be done, and part of me is wanting to re-do some of it aaaagh xD
Oh well, it's looking good despite the obstacles, setbacks, and general lack of experience :)
Non-complaint: I'm always amazed at your work. I admire people who are actually artists. I'm just a DAZ mechanic assembling virtual parts to compensate for a complete lack of artistic talent.
PoppaBear exposes himself: My PoppaBear computer (aka: "Saturn"), my DAZing machine, has been dutifully working unchanged essentially since he was assembled a year or so ago(except for upping his memory to 64GB a couple months ago). But when I noticed that the fan color scheme had wonked out on me I had to open him up, unsnarl cabling, diagnose the issue and fix it. In the process I added two fans at the top, to the three already in the case(two front, one rear) yielding a total of 3 intake at the front of the case, and two exhaust fans at the rear of the case (all 120mm fans). I also realized that the motherboard (Asus: Prime Z490-A) has an M.2 socket specifically for WiFi. Again, I don't really need WiFi on this machine and could easily add an external dongle, but my disease of needing to fill all sockets resurged, so I ordered the proper kit to scratch that itch. And I found a use for two more fans from my junk box.
The case has no window so RGB lighting isn't a priority in this machine, but he does have a mesh front, and with the three front fans being lighted I get my nice soothing magenta color oozing out of the front and top of the case when PoppaBear is nestled down in his hole under the lab bench. Poppa's CPU is an i7-10700 and the GPU is an Asus: "TufGaming RTX-3060-OC", power supply is a Corsair: "RM850x". Not the best racehorse in the world, but he's not maxed out yet (I'm still considering an RTX-3080 while prices are "low") and he's still mighty zippy! So, here's a picture of PoppaBear while his guts are visible. The case is a Fractal: "Meshify-C".
COMPLAINT: Still finding things that have been thrown away ,now it's the half gallon jug/aka milk bottle ,that I used to refill my dogs water bowl ,cause it's impossible to carry the full dog bowl without spilling it when using a walker ....... or to carry the big mouth tea jug for my MR Tea machine .......so now I have to buy a half gallon of milk or OJ ,to get another jug, add that to the list ...
Also found my brother rearanged my shower stuff with the things on the top shelf out of reach put on the lower shelf were I put the things I use all the time ,they are now on a top shelf .......I kinda wish they could experience what I go through for just one day ,I know they have sympathy ,want them to have empathy ........oh well
Non Complaint: Got all my dying plants wateredit'll be a day or two before I know which ones are hopeless, then I'll need to repot them ,poor babies .My fur baby has finally realized she's home which is nice ,being deaf ,and blind it took a while ......
...looks like a Noctua 12S CPU cooler there Considering the NH 15 for the Ryzen 5900x
It's actually a Noctua "NHU14S" (140mm). That cooler is the first one I bought for a modern machine. I was still very naive about building. I've made not a few bad decisions over the years. It was too tall for the case I'd purchased(a case of buyer's regret, pun intended). So, that led immediately to getting a smaller cooler to fit the case which eventually became MommaBear. But then of course, some time later, to hide my mistake, I had to get a bigger case to fit that big cooler into, as well as all new guts which eventually evolved into PoppaBear. This is how nerd addictions manifest themselves. Learn what you did wrong and turn your mistakes into success, usually by throwing more money at it. Boat owners know this intimately.
The photo of PoppaBear below(from 1 year ago) reveals a cute little Noctua 40mm fan not visible in the newest photo. It's mounted on a bracket inside the case blowing directly down onto the M.2 NVMe SSD. I was helpless, the motherboard had a bracket for it and a special fan header for it, so I had to get it.
Complaint: While waiting for my new M.2 WiFi card to arrive, I'm still staring at the guts of PoppaBear and realized that his two hard drives (yes, actual spinning platters, quaint, huh!) sequestered away down in the "basement" have no breathing room. They're crammed down there along with the large power supply and obstructed by excess power cables, and only a small 1/2" by 3" area of the basement "ceiling" perforations to breathe through. Any air that comes in the tiny area accessible through lower part of the mesh front panel has to worm its way around drive cage walls and thick power cables to pass by the drives and somehow make its way to the center of the basement (between drive cage and powersupply, where all the cables are) to eventually exit through the basement ceiling along that little 1/2" x 3" perforation slit. And yes, there are holes in the "floor" of the basement, but most of them are obstructed by the drive cage itself and the power supply. And, remember..., heat rises! And there are no fans in the basement. And the space behind the motherboard partition is mightily crammed with cables with no easy way for air to circulate to serve the hard drives. Nothing to force any fresh outside air into, or out of, the basement area or the back cable partition. The power supply has adequate accommodation for its fan & heat, but none of that makes its way to the disk drives in the basement. No wonder they run warmer than in my other machines. Granted, the hard drives could shed heat by conduction to the chassis, that is, if they weren't secured by insulative plastic cradles. I think chassis design still has a way to go.
Conclusion: Next computer case I get either won't have a "basement" or will have lots more air holes in it. Or perhaps one or more of those cute little 40mm Noctua fans cooling the basement.
Yeah, yeah, I know spinning platters are passé but I trust them for long term backups and archival. But all my machines newer than WinXP also now have one or more SSDs of one type or another. And besides, the problem doesn't go away using 2.5" SSD drives down there, because they get even hotter than hard drives.
Musings: I believe it's time for the personal computer industry to redesign how power is delivered to boards & devices. All these too long, or two short, or insufficient wattage cables are just getting annoying. Perhaps the concept of solid metal "power rails" lining the inside of the case, that boards & devices latch onto?
I am exhausted. I want to take a nap but I'm washing my sheets.
The lights blinked several times and I got logged off of the online game I was playing. Also I thought I had the tv on?
is this going to post?
Probably not!
Dana
Thanks for letting me know. I wonder when I can post again? Now trying to upload a render.
