I knew I'd heard a "Squee" sound somewhere.  "Myst III" game, the little rodent that you had to chase out of the cabbage and he then ate the inflating flowers.yes  Ug, that sentence sounds juvenile when you say it out loud.surprise

Complaint:  Checking account bankbook, doesn't balance.no  Spreadsheet bank details don't balance.frown  I think even I'm unbalanced, or at least my arithmetic skills are.sad

I pride myself on keeping my spreadsheet and bank books accurate to the penny every day, but I'd let my attention get sporatic for a few weeks and now I'm in a numeric bramble bush.crying  And it doesn't help that Amazon's invoices can get split into multiple pieces, parts of which are posted sometimes a week or more after the order and sometimes the actual posted price differs from the initial invoice (unexpected taxes or price change) and I have to wait for them to officially post and double check my entries.  Yeah, this happens once in a while but usually only for a few pennies or dollars, and I quickly find it.  But for several days I've been chasing a varying difference of about $40 trying to figure out if I've double entered or transposed a number, or put a charge into the wrong category.  Getting old, sucks.cheeky

It's that time of year..., I have to get all my credit card balances paid off, and my bank books & spreadsheet balanced for the new year and a new spreadsheet.enlightened  I don't want to be chasing back into last year's spreadsheet trying to fix old problems.angry

I just realized I have to visit a restroom, right as bus pulls up.  I got on the bus as it would be another half hour wait for the next bus.

I made it to a restroom in time.  I had to wait for a free bathroom, but it was worth it.

Uhm ... this is gonna sound strange I'm sure, but - what exactly do you mean by 'bank book'? It sounds kind of fancy. All I have are account statements that I get sent every few months, which, well basically balance themselves, right? I mean ... There's the money coming IN, and the money going OUT (too much, alas), and then there's the balance drawn on the last page. Plus, the online accounting of course, which is the same just digitally (and quicker). And the credit card is set to balance itself monthly I think. Sooooo - where exactly does a 'bank book' come in? Just asking for a curious friend ...

Bank books are old school, but not a bad thing.  You can use a digital type, for instance MS Money or QuickBooks.  If you just trust your bank that everything is fine, you could lose money at some point.  Keep records, check them against what your bank says.  Sometimes something goes wrong and the bank gets it wrong.  That can be bad, or good, for you.

Ah, I see, it's something you create yourself, not something the bank gives you! Like your own double-checking accountancy book. Cool! I don't think my finances are complicated enough to warrant this though. What I usually do is just keep my receipts for a while, and then go through the statements when I receive them, and if an amount seems fishy somehow, I dig up the receipt - and then find that, yes, I did indeed spend that amount again on DAZ assets last month ... sigh ...

Anyways, thanks a lot for explaining! - oh, and happy birthday to Kyoto Kid as well!

Actually, a bank book is something that banks gave to you (and some still do) and they update it at the teller when you visit if you bring it with you.  The machine they use print all credits and debits, with amounts and dates, and show the balances.

Ah, Building Societies (Savings and Loan would, I think, be the US equivalent - except ours didn't melt down, at least not until they demutualised) used to issue passbooks that worked like that.

Now I'm starting to get it I think, must be a little like the 'Sparbuch' (savings book) maybe I used to have as a kid? I don't think they're made anymore where I live, but I may be wrong. Oh, and now I remember that I used to have another little booklet like this, from a Swiss bank account that my aunt set up for me when I was born - and then never ever paid anything into it again, as far as I know. So, there goes the fancy Swiss bank account ... Anyway, I do remember now, both were booklets with tables where - only the teller, I think? - recorded the money flow. Very nostalgic!

Yep, I'm old school.  My "bankbook" is just a little, stapled together, tiny book given free by the bank in which to keep sequential records of checks written and deposits or account transfers made.  I have have one for my bank's checking and one for my savings account.  I use them as a way of keeping a habit of daily checking of my finances.  And as a way of double checking on the bank. (yes, they do make mistakes).  And yes, I do check my  bank accounts via the internet and monthly paper statements, but I only trust them when I can't prove otherwise.  Essentially I have a three way check on my bank account totals, (checkbook, spreadsheet, statements).indecision

Back in the last century when I was making good money, I never learned to manage my money.  If I had kept as good track of, and planning for, my money then, as I do now, I wouldn't need to keep track of my money now.sad

Edited to add:  Ooh, I just read what DanaTA said about bank books.  Yeah, I remember those, but that was a looong time ago around here.  But all my adult life the banks would give out little informal booklets with lots of blank lines for keeping a list of your checks.  Alternatively, sometimes your checkbook would leave an inch or two of stub in the checkbook, on which you could keep a record of what the check was used for.

Yep, I'm an old timer.  Bank checks were the thing in the '50s & '60s.  Credit cards were around but cash was still big.  Do kids these days even know what a "check" is?surprise

Well, I'm by no means a kid anymore, but I have written maybe 2 checks total in my life and received exactly 1, and that must have been at least twenty years ago. Since then, I've basically used my debit card for any non-cash money transfer (credit card costs lots of extra to use in everyday life where I live).  Credit card is used for the online stuff. That makes it fairly easy to keep track of everything. Anyways, fascinating insights! I don't mean to hijack the thread though. So, carry on please, everyone ... I'm not really there anymore, see ...

Gotta finish my little break from lurking up with a quick complaint while I'm at it: I really really WANT that beautiful new sleigh already that DAZ keeps teasing at in the Mr and Mrs Klaus promos! And they're STILL not releasing it, blast them. Instead, they have the absolute cheek to offer us new textures for the ooooooooold sleigh. Yeah I know, these are beautiful as well. But I want the new shiny one, AND I want a reindeer or something with it!

...thank you all for the birthday wishes.

Celebrated a bit last night as the weather forecast for today was to be, and has been... atrocious.  Currently -9° (17°F) with sleet and freezing ain which will last into tomorrow. Winds in the area have been strong all afternoon and evening at around 25 - 35 mph  with higher gusts (one report in the city of a 100 mph gust) making for brutal wind chills (-17°/2°F).  No major damage or outages yet but we re expected to get a fairly heavy coating of Ice by tomorrow.  Had the heater going all afternoon (one of those very inefficient in the wall types) but still feel cold (I feel like I'm running up the power bill for nothing). Had to grab blankets off the bed to put over my legs while sitting at the desk.

Stocked up on food & necessities in preparation on Tuesday so just staying in for the next few days. Not as bad as what parts of the Midwest and East are facing but still bloody rough for where when our usual temperatures are in the 8° - 9° (46 -49°F) range.

Weather Report:  Not unexpected, but it's here..., COLD, WIND, RAIN, ICE, SNOW.frown  It rained all night.  This morning the temperature was 38F(3.3C), and raining during breakfast, but sometime in the last hour,or so, the rain turned to snow, and the temp is now 22F( -5.5C), and the wind is like a hurricane out there.  Already a light dusting of snow is showing on the glittery ice underneath.  Wheee...indecision  Oh, it's going to be an interesting day out there.sad  And I still don't want to have to go to that holiday party, but I'm prepared with some hors-d'oeuvres and a bottle of champagne (small 'c') as an offering if she doesn't call it off.

Edited to add:  Wind doesn't howl around here very often, but it is this morning.indecision

Temperature still falling.  down to 11F( -11.6C) on my porch.  At 12:49 snow has stopped for now, I've swept a total of 3 inches from my porch so far.  Wind still howling.

Edited to add:  At 3:13 the temperature is now 7F( -13.8C), still falling, and, the snow is back.frown

Edited to add more:  3:41 PM.  My porch thermometer indicates  +4F( -15.5C), but the weather station says, that in Jamestown(8 miles away),  it's -4F( -20C)surprise.  Still falling.frown

And yet still more:  6:38PM +2F on the porch.  Zero is the goal.devil

I went to bath and body works to pick up two orders I got for store pick up.  They didn't have the wallflower refill I wanted and they sent me a gift card as a refund.  I didn't see it until after I got on the bus to go to Food Lion to pick up my instacart order I got from there.
