    ...thank you all for the birthday wishes.

    Celebrated a bit last night as the weather forecast for today was to be, and has been... atrocious.  Currently -9° (17°F) with sleet and freezing ain which will last into tomorrow. Winds in the area have been strong all afternoon and evening at around 25 - 35 mph  with higher gusts (one report in the city of a 100 mph gust) making for brutal wind chills (-17°/2°F).  No major damage or outages yet but we re expected to get a fairly heavy coating of Ice by tomorrow.  Had the heater going all afternoon (one of those very inefficient in the wall types) but still feel cold (I feel like I'm running up the power bill for nothing). Had to grab blankets off the bed to put over my legs while sitting at the desk.

    Stocked up on food & necessities in preparation on Tuesday so just staying in for the next few days. Not as bad as what parts of the Midwest and East are facing but still bloody rough for where when our usual temperatures are in the 8° - 9° (46 -49°F) range.

    Sorry I'm late to the party, but happy 69th trip around Ol' Sol, KK!

    ...woke up today to lots of email alerts from our transit system.  Service on all LRT and street trams has been suspended for the day while more than half the bus routes in the city have been cncelled, all due to the ice fro the freezing rain that will continue through tonight.   The issue with the LRT and Tram  is they use overhead catenary for power and the were experiencing ice and frequent cases of debris on the lines (the latter due to the high winds yesterday and last night).

    Layered on the clothing today to try and stay warm .  My computer desks are on teh eat wall of he apartment and the heat doesn't reach very well to that area. Modern building and we get these cheap inefficient in wall heaters you see in old cheap motels.. They should have provided for a central boiler and steam heat system when they built it.  These last few days will probably add about 50% to my month's power bill.

    Hot cocoa and cookie time.

    Still colder than normal here, -4° (24°F) but the winds have calmed down since last night.

    Heard that some cities experienced temperature drops between 35° and 40°F in less than an hour.

    Indeed, people stay safe in areas being affected by the storm and bitter arctic air to follow.  Here in the Northwest we should be back to our "balmy" normal temperatures by Sunday.

    I totally don't get the holiday punch card thing.  I did three orders today and none of them was good for the punch card.  I don't have enough for a 4th order of something that might qualify.

    The punches apply the day after your purchase; so you should be seeing them and the discount tomorrow.

    A Belated Happy Birthday, kyoto kid.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    I can't believe she didn't trust me.
    Maybe if I had left earlier this year, things wouldn't be the way they are now.
    I've let her down so much.
    It's just one thing after another in this house... *exasperated sigh*
    I was looking forward to the ham dinner on Sunday, but I can't eat too much.  Well, that doesn't seem to be a lot, or I will probably suffer the next day.  Isn't it true that there can be a 24 hour or so delay from eating something I have an intolerance towards and reaping the horrible rewards?
    PostgreSQL stopped working for me, so I'm forced to use the content library instead of smart content until I can sort it out. I know that familiarity is a factor, but I honestly can't understand why anyone would rather work this way than with smart content, for all its faults.
  • kyoto kidkyoto kid Posts: 41,062
    ...I've never bothered much with Smart Content which is why I built a custom library and runtime that was better categorised.
    As long as the important parts like Geometries, Data, and Textures went into the proper locations (sometimes the IM fails at that as well), it is all that matters, you can rename and organise other library folders however you want.  I have yet to recently have a full database crash (I have received messages that it stopped working), but notice that searches can be excruciatingly slow even with the "modest" amount of content (about 5,900 items) I have compared to many others here. Faster just to go to the categorised content using the folder tree. Yes it is a pain to initially set up, but the time is worth it in the long run.
    Yeah, steam or hydronic heat is the best...one of the building boilers developed an issue overnight, with a borked controller, which really confused the automation and caused the other 3 boilers to drop to 160F set points (it should be around 200F in this weather) Thankfully this AM, our building maintenance guy (who has a Class 5 boiler operators ticket) managed to isolate it and put it into manual mode, so we have glorious heat!  It was -28C this AM..
    ...the building I'm in is primarily intended for seniors like myself who are more vulnerable to illness and the idea of putting those cheap heaters in instead of a central system was stupid. Even though the building is federally subsidised, the rents are above what people in my situation should be paying. . About 48% of my monthly SS benefit goes just for rent alone for a small studio flat (plus high utility bills in winter).
    The trouble is there isn't much in the way of alternatives as low income housing here is at a critical shortage with many wait lists closed indefinitely.
  • Christmas Eve Day's morning:  Temperature didn't make it to zero on my porch, but there's still two months left.indecision  Although the Internet weather apps say it's -4F around here but my porch doggedly says +2F.  I think the exhaust from the gas furnace, just 15 feet away, drifts toward my porch thermometer.frown  Snow total was perhaps 4 inches but the wind blew it off the roads and fields to pile it up at the edge of the forest.surprise
    Non-complaint:  Wheee... neighbors are back and it's finally warm in here again.yes  Neighbors in the other half of the house have apparently been gone for a few days, but they left their half of the house in low heat stage.  They have the only thermostat in the house, for both apartments.  For three days I've been huddling under my granny blanket while the room temperature hovered in the low 60s.frown  Below 68 my feet start to tingle.  Above 73 is too warm.  68F(20C) is just right for winter.smiley  (It's also the target temperature for old-school photographic developing chemicals).
    Too little support for seniors all around.. If I didn;t have my RR pension and our Gov't pensions, we'd be hurting...
    As fas as heat - we have 4 boilers with a total of 14 Million BTUs in the boiler room on our building's roof..
    Just came home after having a christmas dinner with mom and my brother.
    For those in US, we gave Santa some strong coffe to keep him awake through the long journey ahead.
    I made the mistake of introducing honey-glazed ham to the locals, now it's cemented into tradition whether I like it or not. But the kid is at mummola, so we get to try to catch up on Yellowstone uninterrupted.
    Kyoto Kid, how did your birthday go?
    ...spent it at home huddled up under layers of clothing and blankets as the weather was definitely "frightful" with high winds, bitter cold (lower 20s which is cold for here), and snow that changed to freezing rain about midday (as I mentioned in another post the heaters in these apartments are worthless and only seem to benefit the power company).
    As I also mentioned I celebrated with friends on Wednesday given the dire weather forecast for Thursday and Friday.  That was a good time drinking hot toddies, smoking cigars, and talking about things like football and the old days.
    Haven't tried it myself, but remember, one person's success is another person's failure on these forums.  It seems to follow no pattern.
    I want a cat 9.  Not a Cathrine or other gal's name that has cat as a nickname, but a meow cat 9.  (some say cats have 9 lives so that would be perfect to have a cat 9!)
    Wyvern 3.0?   The 2.0 one is still super sleek and handsome though, and I consider Hoffmeyer's Wyvern to be an independent figure and not a successor like some of my friends and 'quaintances do.
    I don't know about "guess who's coming to dinner". Tomorrow's version is, "guess who's cooking dinner".
    It's my first rodeo, and I'm absolutely bricking it. At least I don't have a joint of meat to cook. I'm using meat slices that you'd normally put in sandwiches *embarrassed chuckle* ^^'
    Although I still intend to do potatoes, Brussel sprouts, stuffing balls, and Yorkshire Puddings... It won't be as good as Mum makes, but as long as its edible (and doesn't give anyone food poisoning until the New Year), then it'll be okay.
    Boy! Am I glad I didn't pay full price for that!
