Messing around with Blender's particle/fluid sims.

How do you get from Studio to Blender? I tried some scripts, but it massively failed... and I didn't go hunting down why.

    oh, and awesome, as usual.

No scripts used.  Just regular export and then assigning all the materials to the correct regions.

So just export to OBJ and then transfer all the materials by hand? You are either dedicated or insane, man!

    Bedroom Series 1

Forewarning, naked male buttock on display.

Isn't it ridiculous the level of sluttery and violence that is allowed, but a single, naked buttock is not?

Well, actually looking at that I don't think the buttock is actually on display but maybe you have more experience than I with DAZ censors.

Anyway, that render's nicely done but you need put it in a modeled room, unless you have a crud computer like mine where that would crash DAZ on you.

No, it was staged very deliberately. As the artist, I say it is complete the way it stands.

I like it the way it stands, too. And I think it would pass the DAZ censors, though I understand the choice to not deal with it.

    Very nice image.

Love the sim. Is there a way to have particles drive the fluid dispersion?

Yeah, I noticed.  That's the Multiplane Cyclorama thing and it's built that way.  Since I had only loaded in the small amount of props I needed just for the test picture, I chose that instead of a proper skydome which would have been my normal choice.  Still, not bad for a test shot.  I'm just happy the Iray was working in Linux.

Oh my, I completely forgot the Cyclorama ever existed =)

I tend to forget about it, too, but it comes with the Essentials for one of the starter scenes so that was one of the first things I installed when I got DS up and running.  Then the Kimo 7 bundle as that was the last full figure package I purchased and it had Iray ready surfaces so I didn't have to track down the Iray Uber Shader which I still don't have installed yet.  I must have missed it when I was getting stuff from the Essentials pack. No lighting other than the HDRI which made it simpler to deal with while testing it to see if Iray would even work.

Very nice as always.  One day, I want to have as many skills as you!  I'm afraid I can't do much about having the same amount of talent as you, but I might be able to improve my skillset! :)  You're the second person I've seen today showing off the particle system in Blender.  I'm definitely going to have to play with that!  Very nice image!

I do it for all my scenes lol.  It can get pretty chatoic, but I have more control though :)

Yes you can.  Just make sure to have a large amount of particles and then adjust the particle settings under the particle settings.  Also adjust the collision propties on your mesh that you want your particles to interact with that plays a big part as it will allow the particles slide with the mesh or fly off the mesh when it reaches to a point.

    Elijah...

I would have liked to have had the shirt dropped around the shoulders, but I don't think there are any clothes that do that. Are there?

Beautiful work @mal3Imagery, you do some of the best male renders I've seen. I find your work inspiring! :) And I love that you usually use the same character. Have you named him? He's really quite striking with his salt and pepper hair and beard and his rugged, yet cultured, good looks. A very cool and distinquished looking character indeed! I hope you've named him and given him a back story, because I find him intriguing. :)

Fit Control can help with that some.  It does have some undress morphs.  For anything more complicated, I usually make my own morphs.  I don't know of any shirts for men that come with those sorts of morphs although there might be some on that other site.  That is yet another reason I decided to learn how to make my own clothes.

For stuff like that I bite the bullet and convert to dynamic.

heh. I've also found that in cases like this, it's often better to avoid fitting and just do your best to adjust a shirt around specific pose, using a touch of collision when necessary (shape reprojector might be useful here!) It's a huge amount of work, but avoids the distortion and weird bends.
  • Kev914Kev914 Posts: 1,115

Thanks, @knittingmommy. I do have fit control, but I didn't think it had morphs to lower the shirt around the shoulders. But I didn't look because I was pretty shure it did. But I'll check to be sure. What do you use to make your own morhps. I haven't tried to to that yet. I have also been playing around with modeling too. But not any clothes yet.

Thanks, @timmis.william. I do have the dynamic plug in. (Or maybe it's not a plug in. Or it could be free now for all I know.) But I remember buying something, but I never tried to use it. Are there any tutorials? Not sure there is any way to just pose the shirt. Since...when it falls down off the shoulders, the top would sort of crumple up on itself. It would still be on his arms, but fallen down in the back.

I wasn't sure what you meant by shape reprojector, and then I opened the store and I saw the new product. I'm tempted to buy it, but I haven't yet.

I think it largely depends on the outfit.  I've had some outfits with end up with a off the shoulder morphs available, but it doesn't seem to show up for every outfit.  I'm not sure what the criteria is for what morphs get used for what outfit.  I'm sure that some of it has to do with the original outfit and what the script has to work with to start.

For a lot of things I can use DynCreator, but I'm still learning how to use that because you still need to use Dynamic Clothing plugin and that thing is tricky!  For more control, I export the outfit out of DS and use a 3D modeler for making morphs.  I started with Hexagon because of the bridge between Hexagon and DS and I was able to get Hexagon for under $3 when I first started.  It comes up for sale a lot and so if you don't have it and it isn't on sale, I highly suggest waiting until it is super cheap if you decide to get it.  Currently, I've been trying to learn how to use Blender.  Sickleyield had this great tutorial on doing morphs with clothing in Blender and I found it easy to follow.

I've since made a few 3D models from scratch by using tutorials and I'm finding that creating morphs for clothing has actually become easier in Blender now that I know a little more about what I'm doing in there.  While I have made a couple of outfits from scratch in Hexagon, I'm creating my first outfit using Blender.  So far, it's going pretty well.  I do think that the easy learning curve of Hexagon made making the move to Blender a little easier.  I tried learning Blender a few years ago and gave up because I couldn't handle the interface.  The interface has changed some since then and I'm finding it easier to navigate.  I'm working on a couple of outfits for men which I should have finished soon.  Once I'm done, I can do that render with my Keoki character in that grass skirt.  If it works out, the grass skirt and accessories will be available as a feebie.

This is not the first time you've got me thinking I should poke harder at Blender.

If you want to start expirimenting with blender I heartily reccomend Mcasual's Teleblender It'll get all the objects lights and cameras where they're supposed to go at least. I use it all the time. You'll still probably want to change all the material settings, but it does give a good head start. The thing you'll probably find most annoying is that you can't edit multiple materials and parts of multiple materials at once the way you can in studio (there are workarounds, for instance if you stick everything other than the textures in a group if you edit within the group those changes will occur across all materials that have the group).

one other advantage to blender is its hair system, which is, dare I say it, super easy to use (easier and way more flexible than either of studio's options for sure) and cycles supports strand rendering so no converting to mesh (I can do hairs with 100000+ strands at render time and not have my computer die.)

I love the simulations in Blender. I kinda use it like a "mini-Houdini". The built-in sims like fluids are awesome (got the Suzanne monkey splashing in fluid with particles thanks to mal3Imagery, yay =), and there are more plugins out there.

It also has better cloth dynamics than Poser.

But somehow the Blender modeling tools are very unstable on my machine. Glitchy. Maybe it's a Win10 thing, cannot say. So I use a mix of Silo, Wings3D, Hexagon and even Carrara sometimes (I still have the C6Pro from that ancient Figues Characters and Avatars book).

And back to dynamics - let's root for this one. People say it's way easier to use than the Optitex sim:

I admit I am in awe of Mal3Imagery's bather, I might have to install Blender again and try and get my head around it...

The bathrobe was an instant buy for me and today we get FeralFey's hinted at poses :-) Hope Serene Night's spotted them

I shiver, whenever I think of attempting blender again.  Then again, I never found a decent tutorial.

But, I no longer shiver, when moving my Genesis and G2M characters over to G3M.  Body hair for G3 would be a bonus, though

  • KnittingmommyKnittingmommy Posts: 8,191

That's nice!  Yeah, body hair specifically for G3 would be nice.  In the meantime, the Real Hairy products (yes, both of them) do fairly well on G3M.  It's not perfect, but it does okay until we get a set made specifically for G3M.

Check out my Laboratory thread for a couple of really good tutorials,  I really like how the ones I've been following are setup.  Maybe give them a try.  The bit about the tutorials starts here.  I'm never a hundred percent sure I've done the links correctly, but that should take you right to where I've linked the first video.  I haven't done a tutorial in a few days as I've been working on making that grass skirt for my Keoki character.  But, I'll be trying another tutorial very soon.  I like that I'm finally getting a handle on Blender as it has some awesome tools.

I have to say that these two are particularly daring characters.

PS DivaMakeup, wish I could help you, but I'm bad at naming =) But if you ever render a character who could pass for a Russian, then I'll be glad to help.

Whoa! Great looking character! I Love it! How did you do the hair on the head and the arm and armpit hair? The armpit hair and arm hair look particularly realistic - is that a product or is that post-work?
