Looks nice, Rogerbee. Any tips about this extra lights, you put to the scene.

I mostly use HDR only, when rendering in iray.

You put in a low intensity spotlight, adjust the lumens to 15,000,000 and adjust the position according to the HDR, I set the light to point at the figure, then adjust the environment intensity of the HDR till it suits. Renders take a lot less time than with pure HDR as well.

    CHEERS!

Why not use the camera settings in Tone Mapping to get the light intensity rather than turning all the lighting up until it looks harsh?

...after you pointed that out to me, suddenly everything made a lot more sense (especially since I used to dabble in film based photography). The current scene I'm working on is looking really good.

A good part of working with Iray lighting is basically having to "unlearn" what seemed normal for 3DL.

LOL! Yeah, we're trying to be 3D Jedis! "You must unlearn what you have learned.."

Here's a new one, it's Magda from Mec4D's Natasza set. The hair is part of the texture and even adding a bikini with an Iray shader doubled the render time, something I try to watch when it's my CPU doing the work. It's been getting a bit hot recently, screaming even with all the cooling fans going, which can't be good for it. I'm not sure how far I want to push it and it still has to keep working even when I do get my GPU, which is fast becoming a priority. Waiting till after Christmas could be too late....

The screaming CPU was down to an accumulation of dust under the cooling fan, and some of the long render times could have been down to that not making the CPU run efficiently. I gave the old girl a bit of a clean and all seems well, I stll want a Strix though.

Here's my latest version of Boris:

I think I'm getting the hang of this, mainly thanks to Mec4D

For 3Delight she looks fine, but she does nothing for Iray. So far, there have been very few textures that make the most of it. I think it's because the PA's create the textures as they would for 3Delight and don't bother optimising them for Iray. The time is coming when one set of textures for both render engines is just not going to cut it.

Another try with Maret - iray render, too.

Better than the last, but still nothing that screams Iray somehow. I keep looking at this shader:

    http://www.daz3d.com/jm-humanshader-for-iray

I think this might help most of the trad 3Delight textures, maybe more than Mec4D's methods would. So far that seems to work on her textures and it could work on Danae's.

After getting nothing less then 2 1/2 hours to 6 plus hours using GPU boost, my lux days are mostly behind me specially with the change to the GTX980 in the beast!  I am all about iray now 12 minutes... http://fav.me/d9b59fj

I'm getting most of what I want done in about 25mins. Mind you, that's a naked figure with no hair. I ought to be able to do a full scene in that time with the Strix I want.

Here's Boris again, but with normal maps and sun sky lighting only. I really like it and I think it's better than HDR's for outdoor lighting.

Time I tried another character with another texture.

The other nice thing is I dont need to delete/ hide what I dont see, hair or lighting does not slow down times no silly bug workarounds..The speeds with the 890M in the laptop and the 980 in the beast are more or less the same..Guess I hvae a powerful laptop and prolly cause its newer components..* Nudity* http://fav.me/d9b59et

    Mmmm, nice!

Transmapped hair was always tripping me up with 3Delight. Shouldn't be a problem when I get a graphics card though. The last scene I rendered was only 127kb. This is because I only render at 577x750. Unless you're doing a gallery image I really don't think you need to go any bigger, certainly not for forum posts anyway.

I can tell you night and day jumping from the AMD Fire Pro W5000 to the GTX980 I let stuff run between 25 minutes to just over 1 hour full scenes..

All I can run to is a 960 with 1024 CUDA cores, I'm sure that will be enough.

Sounds good the biggest feature is to be able to use iray draw..

One of the many things I love about iRay is that anything transmapped renders oodles faster than when using 3Delight.  Seriously huge difference.

I feel better about getting AoA cameras. I still have yet to figure out how to use Iray depth/distance canvass at all, buuuut... hey, AoA depth camera works fine, is nicely configurable, and doesn't care that everything has an Iray shader.

(It probably won't handle transmaps well, but that's ok for my uses)

One thing about depth camera: I can double render time, roughly, by relying on depth camera + masking to create haze and distance effects. Or I can do it all with haze in Iray... and increase render time by 20x+

  • Oso3DOso3D Posts: 15,041

Ok, depth camera to make a mask to transition between Iray realism and filtered artistic style.

This took less than a minute to render in Iray. Improving my workflow (and learning what stuff sucks up render time)

One thing I want is to see what I'm doing without that awful 'preparing scene' lag. DOF is a write off at the moment because the screen doesn't update fast enough for me to see what I'm doing. Switching draw styles just to move the camera gets confusing and often adds to that lag.

Well, I found a nice DOF tutorial in the new DS Creative, but haven't played with that yet. I have finally done someone else apart from Boris, it's another MEC4D texture, this time it's Beach Boy which was an add on for the Muchacho set for M4. I also worked out how Cath did her albedo maps and have now featured them.

Now to play with the lighting, I got that Latitude and Longitude set and will see what I can do with it. I think the Iray Sun Sky is the best for outdoor lighting.

    Nice!

It turned out that what I thought I was setting up as an Albedo map was in fact an SSS map. I found a video that told me how to set up albedo maps and it all clicked into place. Nobody had really laid out the full and correct method, at least not in a way anyone could follow. I'm not going to post here how to do it and I unsubscribed from the Iray renders thread as there were too many chiefs in there and you daren't contradict them. As the method partly uses info from Cath, I'll have to drop her a line so with a view to setting up a tutorial thread.

Anyway, here's the result when you do it all properly:

Man since I got the beast back with the 980 Sunday I have been fighting with colors being off. Turns out I had a bad driver install. Anyhoo I kind of like how this one came out. Love the fact that one can use inderect lighting with iray without slowing render speed. *nudity* http://fav.me/d9bjgio

At the moment, if colours are off for me, I know that the lead on the monitor isn't quite pushed in properly.

There comes a time when you have to say "Enough fiddling!!" and lock down the formulas you use for everything, save as presets and move on. I think I'm finally happy with my skin and eyes. One thing I will pass on is to pick up the colour of the lips as its own transmitted colour, then the mouth stands out and the face just works.

I can now start working with other characters....

Just in case anyone was thinking 'That'll only work on Mec4D textures!', ah no, for here is Darius with the methods applied. I'm truly happy with him now.

I will change the environment when I actually have one I want to use. Right now it's figures I'm concentrating on as I'm saving anything else for when I get a GPU. There's no sense straining my CPU when I will need it for many more things than renders.

Truly happy was I, LOL! Vincent Van Gogh should be testament enough that no artist is ever truly happy!

    I do like this though:

Not bad considering I've only been using Iray for a month!
