I haven't actually installed win10 yet.  I authorized the preparation exam and notification stuff that came out a few weeks ago but haven't yet downloaded or installed the new OS.

I did this on a Win8.1 machine that was upgraded from a Win7 machine.  Recently probably after some Win8.1 upgrade in the last month or so, my Win8.1 "Solitare Collection" app stopped working.  PMO angry  I liked the Solitare Collection better than the "Classic solitare" that's on Win7 machines. (the Win8 version seems to let you win significantly more often!).  I tried removing the Solitare Collection and reinstalling it but connecting to the MS store is a pain in the butt and when it finally does download, it fails the installation saying "Something Happened".  Web research into the error code finds no exact match but does reveal lots of people with lots of problems with Windows Store apps.  Personally I thought the whole Windows Store concept was a crock of doo-doo the first time I had to deal with it.  Since then, nothing has changed my mind.  Wow, what a convoluted nightmare.  So now I'm supposed to assume that Windows10 is going to magically install properly on this machine?  I don't think so! sad  I want my Solitare Collection back and I'm afraid I'm going to have to rebuild from scratch to Win7 then upgrade to Win8.1 and all the subsequent updates and hope that that fixes the problem.  If store apps don't work properly then Win10 is also probably going to booger up.  I think I'll wait another 6 months before trying win10.

The something hapened error I had with Secure Boot was the partition that need to be clean and setthe partition to GPT format before clean install for win 8.1 or win 10

here is the link to the process on how to prepare the SSD or HD for clean instlation on win10, it worked for me and win10 works wonderful now finally , upgrades always mess up too much stuff so I prefer clean install

I have't tried any Daz software on Windows 10 yet but so far the upgrade on my PC has been a disaster. I chose to upgrade my Windows 8 laptop convertible and now none of my Windows 8 apps will start. The store app says it is going to update some of them but gets a little way into the update and just stops. I used to use this machine mainly as a Kindle and digital comic reader but neither of those work anymore. My main machine is definitley staying on Windows 7 for now.

Well, that was odd. After Windows said it had fiished the upgrade the machine was in the state I described above. After fiddling around, restarting a few times and searching the internet I gave up and left it with the store showing three install progress bars that hadn't made any progress for over an hour. When I looked at it again a few hours later the installs had actually finished and the machine seemed to have sorted itself out.

I've no idea why my computer sulked for a few hours claiming it had done the upgrade but obviously not finished, but I have got my apps back working again. I had to switch off the new fast startup mode because it stopped my PC from shutting down at all but apart from that it seems OK. I didn't select the express privacy but went through all the options, and I was amazed at how many options involved sending everything I type or write on the touch screen to Mictosoft! I switched all of these off.

Does anyone know if Daz Studio 3 will still run in Windows 10?

Seems to be running OK on my end. I did a spot and full render of a scene.

I so miss that UI, medium buttons and slim and clean. I haven't run DAZ Studio 3 in ages. Looks so great on my 1920x1080 screen.

I still need to use D|S3 now and then; there's a lot of UI features I'd love to see put back in. Good to know it still works in Win10... even if I haven't decided yet when/whether to light the blue touchpaper.

I had problems downloading the ISOs, program just hang forever a 0%. Turned out to be lack of diskspace on drive C (had only 1.5 GB left). Even though you ask it to put the ISO on another drive with lots of space it apparently first downloads the files to C and then process them there. Even on another machine with 4.5 GB left on C the program crashed after download because the final processing needed more diskspace than the 1.5 GB left after the files were downloaded. And of course just with the "Something Happened" error message so you don't have a clue about what the problem is.

Still waiting on the one machine I left the upgrade request open for .. ;)

Only one casuality of the upgrade so far.

Ironically it's Microsoft's own, 'Rise of Nations' game. Though I suspect it's mostly down to nVidia's new driver.

Speaking of which, everything in the interface feels a bit faster.

looks like I have it now.The default UI and theme are ugly and painful to use :( .Everything in the theme is snow white with very difficult to read gray colored text., the icons look absolutely ancient. If I didn't know any better I would swear I was looking at Gnome 2.4 high contrast theme.

Getting rid of all those preinstalled "apps" wasn't an obvious thing, I had to use the console to do it.

I've not noticed any speed difference, so at least it's not slower.

My internet was very slow until I found the P2P updates and got it turned off ( I hope ).

When I click "Help" on any of the Settings panels, it opens my browser and does a bing search instead of taking me to the MS documentation site for that particular part I needed help on.

I still have to open the task manager and kill "apps" like the "Settings" panel, or I end up with lots of them running in the background.I'm not sure what Cortana is, but I think it's a clone of Google's talk to search feature.I can't seem to kill it or uninstall it so far.Sitting idle with firefox open on this page,,,the task manager says it's using 2.3GB of ram and 2%-14% CPU activity.Firefox accounts for 300MB and 1% of that.2GB sounds like a lot of ram for such a basic UI with so few features.

Have you used your Microsoft ID as your login?

That may be a bad idea for some.

Using a 'normal' username and password as your main login means things like Cortana won't startup.
Only put the Microsoft ID in where you need it, like the store or Xbox live.

    (I've left the p2p updates on, but that's 'cause I'm such a nice person)cheeky

Windows Defender itself can use up to 400 MBs, that's what it was showing up for me (it also slows down the hard drive when it starts scanning). Turning it off will not work. It will come back. I used No Defender to turn it off and even with that you have to ignore the warning pop-up that tells you it is tuned off otherwise clicking on the warning popup will turn it back on. The warning will go away eventually, it has for me.

A friend has just got Win 10 down on his laptop and was cussing and fighting with it recently.  Despite turning off sync and onedrive (or whatever it is) it was syncing and driving his C: at high read I/O and using the network (despite him not browsing the web) ... ;)

From what I saw a lot looked like Win 8 and then there were bits that ... wow, talk about basic and stark-looking!  I can see why people have mentioned boring and grey in this/other threads!

I get the feeling that the Windows 10 team ran out of time. You know how corp.'s work, they give an artificial timetable and expect flawless miracles. Something tells me the team ran out of time chasing bugs and did not have the rest of the code complete to make the UI as nice as they wanted it to be. I can't believe that this uneven mess was by design.

I think you have to take into consideration that the interface has to work on phones and tablets as well as computers and they may not have the same display capabilities as computers do. We'll just have to see what emerges. I had to use 3rd party programs to get Aero back in 8.

    CHEERS!

Cortana appears to have been declared an essential part of the OS, it can't be fully disabled or uninstalled.I can "turn off" the feature in the UI, but it still continues to run in the background.A few registry hacks have been posted online, but they are hit and miss for sucess. They haven't worked for me.She restarts herself no matter what I do.

I am taking that into consideration. That is one of the design criteria of the new OS. To me the complete desktop UI was not finished. This is my belief.

Yes, that's correct. But it shouldn't be taking a huge chunk of memory. The Cortana service on my machine is taking about 20 MBs.

We will have to sit tight and wait for an app, like the No Defense, to pop-up and help us turn her off completely and for good.

...part of the reason why I burned out on programming, I like to make sure what I turn out works before it goes public.  Sadly, when the execs in power say  "launch" you launch even if it's not yet on all thrusters.

...one more reason I am staying with 7.  I never liked "digital assistants" telling me what I need to do when.

Rendering takes a lot of processing horesepower and anything that takes away resoruces unnecessarily is just a "boat anchor" in my book.  It may not be that big in memory, but it still vies for valuable core space.

...which you most likely will have to pay for, just like getting rid of ads in the games pack.

It isn't just the UI that feels unfinished. The Edge browser too seems incomplete. I would love to start using it. I would ditch Firefox. It has a bookmark on the side which is what I always want with my browser (Chrome sucks, and Vivaldi is not there yet) but it has no feature for plugins. So I can't use it without my password manager. Also, I believe Java (not JavaScript) is a no go. I need this for banking. Banks needs to move on from Java.

My Gentoo Desktop,,it eats 2GB ram as well,,but it's supporting many more features,,like that fancy transparent console window and tranparent theme parts :)

I'm going to spend some time trying to get Studio and DIM up and running on Gentoo.

I think this idea that you should have one UI that works on all devices from desktops with large monitors to a mobile phone is stupid. They are very different devices, people use them in different ways and for different things. Having connectivity and easy data exchange between them is useful but I don't want my PC screen to look like a hugely magnified copy of my phone.

And I think there should definitly be different UI modes for touch screens and mice. I have a touchscreen tablet/laptop convertible. It can run Windows 7 applications but trying to hit stardard size scrollbars and menus by pokeing at them with your finger is a nightmare. But on a computer with a mouse I don't want big chunky buttons that take up most of the screen.
