Cortana appears to have been declared an essential part of the OS, it can't be fully disabled or uninstalled.I can "turn off" the feature in the UI, but it still continues to run in the background.A few registry hacks have been posted online, but they are hit and miss for sucess. They haven't worked for me.She restarts herself no matter what I do.

...one more reason I am staying with 7.  I never liked "digital assistants" telling me what I need to do when.

Rendering takes a lot of processing horesepower and anything that takes away resoruces unnecessarily is just a "boat anchor" in my book.  It may not be that big in memory, but it still vies for valuable core space.

I agree, but we are proboably in the minority here. Except for 3D grapics enthusiasts and hard core gamers the only use most people have for all this processor power and memory is running all this crud that Windows comes with now. And that is the market that Microsoft are aiming at. Unless we can persuade Daz to make Linux versions of it's software we'll probably just have to put up with our rendering power being stolen by software we don't want.

there are 2 different UI under windows 10 one for touch that improve touch experiences "tablet mode" but it looks like my Win8 phone , I use Cintiq Touch and Pen, I just got new 500 GB SSD and made fresh instalation , the only thing that really improve was my internet speed from 45mbps to 95mbps down and 45mbps up .. and of course fresh instalations working better as I don't like upgrades that mess up everything especially the drivers ... runing everything smooth now without issues so far

"They" won't have much to record on my end if I can't get this antiquated UI to to function.I've had to switch to the "High Contrast Black" theme, the default was giving me headaches just trying to read the menus.

...yeah, nothing like annoying pop ups every five or ten minutes when it cannot make a connection.  I usually have my workstation offline unless I am using the DIM, uploading pics to here or DA, or downloading a freebie from a forum thread or Daz Creative.Magazine.

I wouldn't panic, they know more of me than myself, and I don't care. I'd even show them my underwear if they ask me to do so, (it's clean, by the way) I wouldn't mind, 'cause I have more important things to mind.

    What do they know?

    1. Birthday.
    2. Money I earn.
    3. Taxes paid.
    4. Properties.
    5. Services and use habits , electricity, phone, cell, internet, Netflix, Credit Card.
    6. Car Insurance, Health insurance, diseases.
    7. Mortgages, loans.
    8. Travel habits.
    9. Comments on forums.

The list might be bigger, but I have other concerns, like how will I surprise my son when I get home.

Windows 10 knows where you have been, what you bought and what you thought and has shared that with your son. There won't be any more surprises...   ;)

I had original 50GB Scan Disck , but it was too small , so last year I updated to 250GB Samsung and I had problems after one year and not only me also my 2 external HD from samsung give up after a year on the same day like someone sets  a clock on it lol .. so for me that is ..

I switched to Crucial 500GB now based on the most positive reviews ..  I hope it last , with HD today you need to be lucky I guess .. anyway I made a clone today so in case it get damaged or corrupted I will have another one ready so not need to install everything again . I use it only  for system anyway as all my projects are on regular HD , I like SSD just not luck with samsung and will never buy again anything for my computer totally junk.

I tested DS with all my other programs working without issues and I feel like having brand new PC again the seconds of rebot time is pleasant again, it is my workstation so only couple of programs running , I guess my other system was clumpy as with each Win8 update it was slower and slower internet inckuded so actually I an glad the ood SSD gives  up lol  the capacities of SSD is too small so I hope now it last for little longer also purchased 2 years warianty this time

Oh yes they save all your passwords and data , did not know that, today after fresh instalation found out that M$ keep all my log in info to everywhere , the moment I sign in to M$ account all my passwords was automatic in and I never used IE browser and I did not reinstall other browsers not my phone was yet in synhronizarion with the PC so the info must come from M$, also Cortana greeting me by my name lol  as I use her on my W8P for hands free control for long time ..

As long you don't use M$ account they can't collect much , for the internet just disable the adapter  and nothing will try to connect or use CPU for that , on my workstation I only connect Internet when I need it or for weekly updates as I have my other devices for that, however I did not updated my  laptop and I keep it the way as long possible don't want it to mess up all my old stuff

Wouldn't it be fun to have a script that would feed random garbage to their data collector? I think it would be :)

That's how I log on to my system currrently (8.1).  How does one set up their system to NOT use the MS account?  I really never liked that but I feel like it's become habit.  frown

The one major problem I had with 8 that could happen again in 10 was that my MS account was also my email account. I changed my email address, but, I just could NOT change my MS account to the new email address, it was locked to the old one! Trying to set up a new account seemed impossible. I went back to 7 then. If MS hasn't changed this then you could find yourself with major headaches down the line if you ever want to change your email address.

The word is, if you have 7 don't get 10, but, I'll see what transpires further down the line, who knows, they may actually get it right again, though I won't hold my breath..

yeah but it would give you garbage feedback back so the total system would not make sense at all . People worry about collected info but once you connect to your internet every move  is collected by your provider

Internet is not private and never was , you want to be incognito? trow away your phone and credit card, cut the internet, move to Alaska and put alluminium folie on your head  lol

"How does one set up their system to NOT use the MS account?"

Firewall. Nothing comes in or goes out, unless you allow it. Whether the OS will be happy with handcuffs is another matter. (Oh, and not the Windows firewall, of course - you need one one that is actually configurable by the user and controls both incoming and outgoing connections)

No need to be that drastic. One can choose to not use the MS account sign in, just like in Windows 8. But it is a bit hidden and you need sharp eyes. Here is a quick "How-to":  http://www.baldnerd.com/install-windows-10-without-a-microsoft-account/

For me,,it's not so much the tracking of private information,,it's the almost complete lack of customization of the UI.As long as I'm not getting waterboarded at some secret base because I googled for "The Girl 6 free dresses and hair props", I really don't care much about the tracking.

I just want to be able to change these hideous fonts and window themes.I was hoping for a more futuristic looking UI.I wanted something that looked more "21st century". What we got was more reminiscent of the stuff linux had 15 years ago :( .

There are a few things you can change in UI....

    ♦   The background of course.

♦    The color of the main taskbar, and background of the start menu.  You can even add some tranp arency if that is your thing.

♦   You can also change the color of the buttons, and slde-out of the live tiles.

♦   Icons can also be changed.   I have several sets I have downloaded in the past and like better.

Just really dig into the Personalization optios.

Personally I like Win10.  It has taken me longer to plug up all the MS holes, than to do the imnstall.  Until they get Edge reigned in with the ads, I will stay with my Firefox.

♠   Creating a local account is great idea.   It also disables Cortana.

  • Wiccan1Wiccan1 Posts: 198

Ooops, just read the button comment above.  You can resize the buttons (tiles) quite easily by right clicking on top of them.  They shirk up quite nicely!

The 2 biggest problems I have are the fonts are a dull gray color, and can't be changed.Well they can be,,but I have to delete all the fonts except for the one I want to use.Not really a solution because I like to use some of those extra fonts in gimp.Second would be the window borders. There isn't any visual clue as to where the window border actually is,,so I have to hunt around with the mouse pointer trying to find a place I can grab it to move it around. The fact that everything is either all white, all black , or all yellow, doesn't make it easy to look at.Yesterday I was getting notification popups that had all black windows with the gray fonts on them.My eyesight just isn't that good to be able to use that setup.I have no idea what it was trying to tell me.So I switched the theme back to the all white default one this morning.

also,,the cardboard cutout style art work leaves a lot to be desired.

You wouldn't happen to have a link to those icon themes would you? I'd love to change mine to something a bit easier to look at.

I think I've stumbled across what might be causing my font color issue.Windows update has removed the driver for my amd graphics card and replaced it with one of their own.I reinstalled the driver, rebooted, after I logged in, Windows promptly removed it again,,so I'm hunting for a way to stop that.I believe the issue is with the color management profile that is being used. The AMD control panel is gone, so I can't see what profile is being used at the moment.

Internet Explorer 11 is still there, I use it 'cause I like the add-in's that block ads. I also use Chrome.

Cortana is disabled where I live, so I reclaimed that spot on the taskbar.

YaYYY!!!!! My fonts are no longer gray !!!!!!

My only options for color managment profiles were a windows generated icc file or an sRGB profile.I choose the sRGB profile then went to the amd control panel and selected RGB4x4x4(Full RGB) pixel format, and now the colors look much better. My monitor has 9300k, 6500k, custom, and sRGB to choose from, so I set it at sRGB.Now I have black fonts on all white tool bars.

edit: I had to "defer" the driver update to stop it from reinstalling itself. That will do for now, until I can find a more permanent solution.
