I like that image. I know what you are saying. I guess I am a bit slower on figuring what to do to improve an image, especially when short of the knowledge to do so. That is where you are an artist to I think most of us. I am more apt to go back to an image way later down the road. I think it is because computors have allowed us to do so. If I had to do art the old fashion way. I would be done and not even think of trying again. lol :)
I was thinking about that for painting on spots or markings on the animal in the background color, then using the fur/hair brushes I got to paint over them. I have used photos in the past for texturing. I have to admit once I learned how to do textures better I could almost recreate a better texture by hand in most cases and it looked way better. I believe there are pluses and minuses with using photos as textures. I definetely use them for references in my creating. :)
get the "whole" right and don't concentrate on certain aspects. That is what I learnt from that.
I do think what and the way you are doing things is right. You have a skill set that will help you evolve. Yes Understanding is key for me but I need simple breakdowns not jargon so my level of the technical side is just how certain things work inside Daz Studio and why they do. I think you need to know your limits of the level of understanding. So I leave the coding side to the ones who know how. I don't go there.
Just keep learning lighting and surfaces. Reference real world aspects of light and surfaces, how light bounces reacts with certain surfaces, ambient light, fill and key lights. Even for 3DL. Once you have a better understanding then work on composition but I would urge everyone to follow the rule of thirds (DS has a Guide built in) even for test renders when learning. Just used to doing it. Once you know the rules (guidelines I call them) then you can break them with the image still looking right.
Thanks Szark. :) I hope the way I am doing things will help in the end. I keep getting dragged back into learning lights and surfaces no matter what. I keep running across diferent ways people explain it, which is helpful. I know composition is like the last thing on my list perse. I just kind of toss things together like in my cow scene, but I have read a little on it. I did decide that the rules of thirds would be the easiest to work with overall. Daz has built in composition guides?
Computor coding/programming makes no sense to me and does not even seem logical or intuitive what little my partner has shared with me. My eyes start to glaze over. lol
yep one RoTs guide
Cool thanks! I never knew daz had it. I have it checked now and will be helpful. :)
My pleasure.
:)
I was playing with my new lights to see how much better they are than me trying to figure this all out from scratch. I tried to use the lights on other scenes I did and I got frustrated, so I made a scene from scratch. The jury is still out on how well I like the new lights. I do have comparison renders. I tried to get the shadows going in the same direction or close anyways.
I think I need to make her a reed or birch bark basket. :)
The first is my light(s) set-up and the second is just using the portrait lights in the product 'Reflective Radiance for 3Delight'.
Edit: I worked on my 'lighted' scene to see if I could reproduce the same effect. I think it is close but the radiance lights placed more 'light' in areas I can't seem to without adding tons of lights in general.
Interesting comparison. I just picked those up too but haven't had time to do much with them. It does seem like you got a more even light with the new lights, more of an even fill.
I like the portrait lights alone so far the rest ..well I need to try out some suggestions made to me because render time or the render gets stuck. I am not sure which it is, is really bad. One scene I applied the new lights to sat on 1% for 30 minutes. I shut it off sooo...
Added: I did a little more 'snooping' about the item. There is a 4 page user guide which helps to explain things more. Here is the link to it. http://docs.daz3d.com/lib/exe/fetch.php/public/read_me/index/37691/37691_reflective-radiance-for-3delight-user-guide_.pdf if this helps anyone out. :)
A convo going on in IceDragon's thread about a new Blender thread. I thought I would put it here too. :)

Surfaces: It is a very old DS3 tutorial on the Daz Studio Default shader http://homepage.eircom.net/~neilvpose/ds-settings.htm but is does show what the settings do in a plain english format. I have recommended this tut for years now and IMO it should still help.
Lighting: This one http://digilander.libero.it/maclean/DStutorial.htm is also old but again most if not all the settings there is in 4.9 even though we have extra stuff now it should still be helpful
Thanks Szark I will check those out. :)
It's been a long time since I played with Daz. I try to keep up with some of the threads. It's been a crazy busy summer for me. There are still things to get done before winter hits. Just trying to get back into the swing of things again slowly as time allows. It rained today and I did not get much done outside, so I worked a bit in Daz. I will post something tomorrow it's suppose to rain again.
Daz Studio, D|S or simply DS. Daz or Daz 3D is the Company
Glad to see you back! A day off every now and again to play is always a good thing!
Yes, taking time off to play is important. I have to freely admit sometimes after being out working I was too pooped to model in blender or even put together a scene and render it. :)
Glad to see you back, too. You live on a farm, don't you? I guess summer/fall are probably your busy seasons.
@ Knittingmommy. Thanks and yes, I do. :) Pretty much from spring through fall is busy with something like clean-up/preparing for winter, trimming, weeding, cultivating, fertilizing, haying, repairs, dig things back out in the spring, etc. It has not rained yet here, so we went out and put some polywire up to divide my hayfield into smaller paddocks to graze the cattle in. The grass in the pastures in either ate up mostly or got a bit too mature, so they eat it quicker and protest more than earlier in the year. LOL
Just some new items I am playing with.
I am still working on my deer scenes. I think I am going to try to make a sky background for them.
I did this scene tonight, while listening to some talks/interviews.
Just some WIP. Playing with lighting and backgrounds.
Love the horses, they look so serene!
I don't do many toons but these sure are adorable!
Thanks! :)
I usually don't either, but I really liked the deer. I kind of like some of the toon people and some other critters sooo.
The horses I have worked on that scene a bit more with lights, angles, etc. I have that on my laptop right now.
It has been raining quit a bit here. I have been doing some tomato sauce and working on scenes. I need to find my notes I did last winter. haha
I do have a a couple toon figures, I have Melody and also the unicorn toon. Havne't used them yet though.
Notes? I have so many notes I usually can't find what I need in a timely manner anyway lol. Its barely rained in three weeks.
I have the turkey, horse forget his name, and the deer. I want the toon cow and bear. I know there might be some others on my wishlist. :)
Will send the rain your way then. LOL I think we must havea bout 6 inches in the past week. *grumbles*
I placed my notes in a notebook, but not sure where I put it last. I have not looked hard either.
I changed a few things and worked on the lighting some more. I also did a second camera angle. I am still working on it not quit happy with the end result yet.
Interesting how the camera angle can make something look much different even though you haven't moved the characters. I can't decide which I like better.
Yea, weird how that is. I often times happen to stumble across a new angle when I am placing things, then I think that is kind of cool. I kind of like both really. haha
I am experimenting with the grass. I have to work on a few things like transition from grass to road. The line is too hard. I placed some grass I have in a few spots, but I think I need to work on the coloring a bit too look like mature grass dying off after going to seed or going into dormancy except the part that is close to the ground.
I made the grass green for the most part with a few exceptions.
